Overview

With the help of his imaginary friend, Weasel, Ellison finds his very own voice - a jazzy sound that charms all the other animals!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Ellison the elephant cannot make a great trumpeting sound like all of his friends and family and that makes him feel bad. One day, in frustration, Ellison pulls a bush from the ground and out pops a weasel who first irritates and then befriends the little elephant; Weasel also helps Ellison figure out what his own unique sound is (he is a jazz elephant!). Soon the other elephants come to appreciate Ellison's unique sound and want to emulate him. The story line itself is one that most young readers will quickly recognize: an outsider feels alone until he understands his own unique gift and is able to use it in a way that garners the appreciation and respect of others. But it is the "extra's" the author offers in the form of a CD that set this picture book apart. A variety of voices read the parts of Ellison, Weasel, Mother, and others with great enthusiasm, and the jazz sounds created by Ellison's unique trunk really add to the enjoyment of the text. Audio cues within the CD let young readers know when to turn the pages. The actual plot of this story has a few weaknesses (apparently Weasel is an imaginary friend and the way the reader figures that out is much too subtle for most young readers), but this is still a fun text because of the addition of the CD and the energy of its reader/voices. This text also received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Children's Book and Audiobook. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.

    great book

I gave this to my son when he was 16. I wrote an enscription in the front about how unique he is and finding his own sound as he becomes a man. He is grown now, but still has his Ellison the Elphant book!

    more from this reviewer

    Ellison is sweet

My 4-year-old received this for his birthday and has listened to it on his CD player every night since...all night long. If he rouses in the night and it's been turned off, he will wake us up to complain about it. It's a sweet story about being your own person.

Music isn't just for musicians anymore...

...it's for elephants and every other creature still searching for their own voice. What a refreshing, engaging twist on the familiar theme of self-esteem. When a friend of Ellison's encourages him to just 'look inside for his voice' Ellison's success is our pleasure. Children already know elephants can play music with their trunks, it's all of us grown-ups that needed reminding. Which, thankfully, Drachman has done delicately, visually, and audibly, and quite completely. Thank you!

This Elephant will become your friend!

I strongly recommend Ellison the Elephant to any family with children - and actually to anyone. This beautifully illustrated book is written with great sensitivity to and understanding of children¿s need to be accepted and the special individual qualities that exist inside everyone. Ellison communicates immediately with the reader. The elephant¿s emotions, fears, and final success are deeply felt and shared by anyone who reads and/or listens to the very touching recording that comes with this book. I give Ellison the Elephant my highest praise.
