Overview

Enna and Princess Isi became fast friends in The Goose Girl, but after Isi married Prince Geric, Enna returned to the forest. Enna's simple life changes forever when she learns to wield fire and burn anything at will. Enna is convinced that she can use her ability for good—to fight Tira, the kingdom threatening the Bayern borders—and goes on secret raids to set fire to the Tiran camps and villages. But as the power of the fire grows stronger, she is less able to control her need to burn. In her recklessness she is captured by the Tiran army and held captive by a handsome, manipulative young captain who drugs her to keep her under his influence. Can Isi and her old friends Finn and Razo rescue her without sacrificing themselves? And with the fire still consuming her, will Enna find a way to manage the gift that threatens to destroy her?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Enna was first introduced to the Young Adult audience in Shannon Hale's award winning prequel, Goose Girl, as the faithful friend to Isi, who is a renowned heroine in her own right. Two years later, Enna faces challenges, dangers, and adventures even greater than before. Living peacefully among the forest of her origin seems to be the path of Enna's future until her brother, Leifer, following the directions of a mysterious cloth, learns the art of fire-talking. Although Enna fears the powers demonstrated by Leifer, she is also fascinated by the possibilities for patriotism, especially when Bayern, home of her beloved Isi, is swept into war. Readers are impelled along as Leifer suffers the consequences of his hypnotic discovery, and Enna experiments with fire, just for the benefit of the country, she tells herself. Although she has warned Leifer that fire can only live by destroying, Enna becomes entangled in the web of fire-talking, destruction, and secret sorties into enemy country with her friends Razo and Finn. Capture, drugs, deception, escape, death, and final victory for good, all take readers on a fast-paced ride into metaphorical questions that are a contemporary as tomorrow's news. Enna's story is a compelling moral tale that teens, classroom teachers, and parents will find memorable and hopeful. Readers will eagerly anticipate the third book in the series. 2004, Bloomsbury Publishing, Ages 12 to 16.

KLIATT
Readers need to have read The Goose Girl to enjoy this sequel, because so many of the characters grow out of the first book. The fantasy world created by Hale is rich indeed, and Enna's story adds a further dimension. Enna is one of Princess Isa's friends. Isa had received a gift of controlling the wind in book one; in this volume, Enna is given the gift of fire. But this is very dangerous. Not only can the fire be destructive outside of Enna, but if she tries to keep it contained inside her body, the heat can kill her. There are horses, battles, romance, and mysticism—a combination that appeals to YA readers. (Sequel to The Goose Girl). KLIATT Codes: JS—Recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2004, Bloomsbury, 317p., Ages 12 to 18.

School Library Journal

Gr 6-10- This companion novel (Bloomsbury, 2004) to Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl (Bloomsbury, 2003) provides a closer look at the emotional and physical struggles of 16-year-old Enna who discovers that she is able to burn at will. Can she control her power and use it help save the kingdom of Bayern from the attacks of neighboring Tira, and ultimately rid herself of its all consuming nature or will she, like her brother before her, become swept up by the fire's own dark need? This full-cast recording suffers from uneven narration. Some characters, and the full range of their emotions, are strongly portrayed, in particular the protagonist Enna. The consistently excellent voice of the background reader weaves its own spell and ties the cast and plot together. However, the simpering and grating voicing of Princess Isi detracts from the listening experience. Despite this flaw, fans of the first book will welcome the opportunity to learn more about Enna and her struggle to find her place in the world and will delight especially in the story's romantic resolution.-Cindy Lombardo, Cleveland Public Library, OH

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-This companion volume to The Goose Girl (Bloomsbury, 2003) focuses on the best friend of that novel's heroine, Princess Isi. Two years have passed, and 16-year-old Enna has returned to the Forest to care for her dying mother. Her older brother finds a mysterious piece of vellum that teaches him to set fires with neither flint nor spark. The warm energy of the fire turns destructive as Leifer becomes controlled by the desire to burn. When Bayern goes to war, he wins a battle by burning the enemy, but dies as well. Enna discovers the vellum and its power and hopes that her new knowledge will help her protect Isi and all of Bayern, but it puts her and her loved ones in mortal danger. In some gory battle scenes, Enna burns hundreds of people alive, winning the war, but nearly dying herself. Like her ability to fire-speak, Isi's gift of wind-speak is similarly out of control. In hopes of discovering a remedy to their problems, the two young women set off for a kingdom in the south where fire-worshippers live. The answer lies in balance. Not a retelling of a fairy tale, this is an original tale that stands on its own. With a richly detailed setting, eloquent descriptions, a complex plot, a large cast of characters, and romance, this high fantasy will be welcomed both by fans of The Goose Girl and those who have yet to discover it.-Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Those who thrilled to Hale's re-imagining of The Goose Girl (2003) will probably be as delighted with this sequel, as Enna the forest girl takes the stage. Enna (once the closest companion to Isi, formerly the Goose Girl and now queen) watches, not understanding, as her brother learns to control fire, to hold it within himself, and to send it forth as he wills. When he chooses to consume himself in battle, she takes on his gift. Extraordinary images of fire, heat, and light fill this slightly overlong tale. Enna's fire can be seen as desire, or a drug, or the will to power, or simply as a gift that must be made manifest. Hale's burning prose, while weighted to talk rather than action, allows for many themes: the devoted friendship between women, as Isi and Enna risk their lives for each other; the appeal of the bad boy, as the soldier who holds Enna prisoner also lays dark siege to her heart; the gentle, devoted suitor Finn, who always manages to find a place by Enna's side to do what needs to be done. Powerful and romantic. (Fiction. YA)

Meet the Author

Shannon Hale

Shannon’s mother says she was a storyteller from birth, jabbering endlessly in her carriage as the two strolled through the neighborhood; once she could form complete sentences, she made up stories, bribing her younger siblings to perform them in mini plays. When she was ten, she began writing books, mostly fantasy stories where she was the heroine, and she continued writing secretly for years while pursuing acting in stage and improv comedy. After detours studying in Mexico, the U. K., and Paraguay, Shannon earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Utah and a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. In the interim, she submitted short stories and novels to magazines and publishers, saving all her rejection letters which she has since laminated into one continuous 60-foot roll which she proudly unfurls to audiences as a testament to her dedication and determination.

Since the publication of her first book, The Goose Girl, in 2003, Shannon has become a beloved author to young readers as well as booksellers and educators. Her third novel, Princess Academy, earned her a Newbery Honor and is a The New York Times, Book Sense, and Publishers Weekly bestseller. Shannon has also written two books for adults, Austenland and The Actor and the Housewife. Shannon lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, Dean, their children, and their pet, a small plastic pig.

    Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I walked into the library and found this book. When I went to check it out the woman told me a surprising fact. That this book wasn't checked out ever before. They got the book 3 years ago and noone borrowed it. After reading the book I didn't get why people didnt read it. It was such and excellent book. It is about a girl named Enna who learned the gift of fire speaking after her brother died from fire speaking overwhelming him. Soon the fire overwhelmms her and she burns and kills thousnands of Tiran soldiers. Then Tira captures her. The person keeping her in captivity is a greedy people speaker who got her to think that he was in love with her. Soon she reunites with her friends and beats Tira in war. But, the fire is still overwelming her. So she has to have her friend help her. But, her friend is being overwhelmed with wind speaking. So they have to go to Yasid to find out how to solve the problem. It sounds confusing when I explain it, but it really isn't. Don't be like other people and give this book a chance.

    I Also Recommend:

    Intense with Suspense

From the author of the bestseller "Princess Academy", "Enna Burning," by Shannon Hale is the second of the Books of Bayern, an enchanting series completely in a league of it's own! The main character of this book is the best friend of Isi, book one's protagonist. Packed full of action, this book is very intense, letting the suspense build up with every chapter! Readers will find themselves totally submerged in the wonderful world that Shannon Hale creates with her words! "Enna Burning" will surely leave all readers sighing in amazement and excited to begin book three in the series, "River Secrets".
