Overview

To the deep disappointment of her large family, PR princess Theresa Falconetti never dates Italians, men from her old Brooklyn neighborhood, or professional athletes.

Michael Dante, winger for the Stanley Cup champion New York Blades, is all three—and he is head over heels for her. So when Theresa finds herself a buttoned-up lawyer, Michael is forced to take his game to the next level.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Martin's second playful romance set in the world of professional hockey (following Body Check) scores again. After nearly being raped by a sports star, Theresa Falconetti doesn't date athletes-or, in truth, anyone at all. So when two suitors begin courting her, she's flummoxed rather than flattered. Smooth, sexually undemanding Reese Banister seems like a dream come true even though he's the nephew of the man determined to take over her financially shaky PR firm. In contrast, new client Michael Dante, whose family owns a popular Brooklyn restaurant, is her worst nightmare. He's a professional hockey player, he comes from the same Bensonhurst neighborhood as her lovable but irritating Italian family and he's always in her face. As Theresa tries to upgrade the image of Michael's restaurant, decide whether or not to sell out, deal with her father's cancer and cope with the lingering scars of sexual trauma, she must assess the men's true worth. The takeover plot line is sketchy, and Reese's courtship is so transparently shady no reader will be fooled. However, Martin depicts the worlds of both professional hockey and ethnic Brooklyn with deftness and smart detail. She has an unerring eye for humorous family dynamics, and her treatment of Theresa's psychological trauma, while accurate, never overwhelms the story's sweet buoyancy. (Feb.) I Also Recommend:

    Love the Series so far

Good Stuff! When one sees a book based on professional hockey and coming from a very intense football/hockey town (stanley cup & super bowl in same year), I tend to take notice. I had never read any of Ms. Martin's books and decided to take a chance. I was NOT disappointed. Reminded me of Erin McCarthy's Fast Track series. Great romance & humor. I read a review that also compared it to Stephanie Plum, i would agree on some level. PG sex, but that's ok. It blended very well. I highly recommend this for any romance fan. i've only read first and second book, just ordered the third. You won't be disappointed.

"Fair Play" Delivers Fun and Romance

Deidre Martin's "Fair Play," one of several romance novels featuring the New York Blades, provides the reader with light, yet thought-provoking reading. The novel tells the story of Theresa Falconetti, a Brooklyn-born Italian who refuses to date men from her neighborhood. Michael Dante, ace player for the (fictional) New York Blades hockey team, falls for her. Family, friends, ethnic loyalties and working-class values are all part of this enjoyable story. Watching Michael Dante chase Theresa, and her responses to his pursuit, make this a fun book to read. Author Deidre Martin delivers more than the typical romance: These characters care about each other and exemplify community values usually missing from the light fare most romance readers have come to expect. Three cheers for Michael Dante in his quest for romance, and for Martin for creating a fun, yet pithy, book.

    Big Disappointment

I LOVED Body Check and was hoping for the same in Fair Play. Looking at the other reviews, I'm wondering if we read the same book. Theresa was annoying, the writing was inferior and where was the romance? I wonder if this story was written first but published later? It seemed like a totally different person wrote it. I hope her next book is better.

    Finally . . .

I can not tell you how much I enjoy Ms. Martin's writing. She knows real human romance and the passions and pains of genuine people. She bests a great book (her other novel Body Check) with this one. Keep them coming please.

    Martin Makes Magic

Deirdre Martin proves that she knows how to write great characters and stories that completely suck you in and keep you there! 'Fair Play' puts the spotlight on Teresa Falconetti (from 'Body Check') and we get to share her experiences like one of the members of her family. Ms Martin can make you laugh and cry and completely adore these characters. We can hardly wait for the next book from this wonderfully gifted writer.

Deidre is going to rise to the top of your favorites list

Reading new author Deidre Martin's work is a a true delight. Sex scenes in this book are very limited and mild so as not to offend sensiblities. However, don't let that stop you if you prefer yours heavier in this area. Her humor is refreshing and uncontrived. Her characters are intelligent, interesting, and well developed to the point you will hate to see the book end. If her publisher will let her write what she wants, this author will skyrocket to the top of the charts. I've ordered her first book, because you can't find it used, and can't wait to read it.

    I L-O-V-E-D This Story!

Admittedly, I am not a fan of contemporary romance. I do love HOCKEY, so I decided to CHECK this book out. It was definitely a HAT TRICK! Michael Dante can play for my team any day! I did want to SLAP Theresa a couple of times and tell her to wake up about 'Fleece'. If you like Stephanie Plum and Joe Moretti, you'll like this book. Although Stephanie and Joe can't seem to get it together, Michael and Theresa will renew your faith in happy endings! It is light on the sex, but Michael's tenderness will fill your heart.

    What A Treat

Deirdre Martin has a great follow-up read to her first book Body Check in Fair Play. Theresa Falconetti has bounced back after a terrible personal experience. She loves her job at the PR firm she owns with her best friend Janna MacNeil (Body Check), adores live in the big city with all it has to offer. Especially since it is nothing like her old Brooklyn neighborhood. She has made a vow to avoid three things in a man, Italians-men from Brooklyn-athletes. Michael Dante a popular local hockey hero of the New York Blades had know Theresa since her friend Janna married Ty Gallagher his manager of the Blades. Michael is in love with Theresa but she doesn¿t want anything to do with him or so she keeps saying. Theresa meets the classy guy she thinks is the answer to her prayers. This only makes Michael bring out the power play to win her over. Theresa and Michaels relationship is not easy. Both have hurdles to overcome. But watching them get through it is heart warming and emotional. Deirdre Martin really brings this story to life on and off the hockey rink.

a hat trick next for Ms. Martin?

Though he plays on the third line for the Blades and even sits out games at times, native son Michael Dante is one of the most poplar New York professionals because he was born and raised in Brooklyn. Michael knows he loves Theresa Falconetti, but she will not even give him a hip check as she wants nothing to do with Italians or hockey players after a bad experience. Over the objection of his older brother, a fantastic chef, Michael hires Theresa¿s PR firm to run a campaign to ¿sell¿ the family¿s Brooklyn restaurant to the Manhattan food crowd as an in spot. As Michael works closely with Theresa, she sees his nice qualities. Already attracted to him Theresa begins to fall in love with Michael, but will she go for a hat trick of marriage, house and children while they work closely together or leave him benched for life?

FAIR PLAY is a fine sports romance that will score big time with the sports sub-genre crowd. The story line is played in three periods. The opening has Theresa stopping every shot that Michael sends her way. The middle period has Theresa and Michael working as a team with a common goal. The final period is Michael desperately trying to score the winning goal as overtime is not allowed in the book business and a tie is like kissing your sister. Though Theresa¿s constant rejection of Michael should have placed her in the penalty box, fans will enjoy these two players and feel that Deidre Martin has provided a winner. With this tale AND BODY CHECK, is next up a hat trick for Ms. Martin?
