He's absolutely perfect.
If only he were real.

Lane and Vivi have had it with Isabelle Hunter's boyfriend, Shawn Littig (a.k.a. Sluttig). He is the only person who can turn their smart, confident best friend into a complete mess. When Shawn Sluttig cheats on and dumps Izzy just months before the prom she's been planning since the ninth grade, Lane and Vivi decide to take action.

With a few quick keystrokes, they create a MySpace page for "Brandon," the perfect guy to get Izzy out of her revolving-door relationship with Shawn. Too bad he's totally fake. Vivi's younger brother, Marshall, who they hire to be the "man" behind the profile, is way too into being Izzy's fake boyfriend. So they turn to cute, prep-school Jonathan to be the face of Brandon. But when Vivi falls for Jonathan, and Sluttig tries to wedge his way back into Izzy's prom picture, the whole plan starts to go south faster than you can say "fake boyfriend."

Publishers Weekly

After Isabelle gets dumped yet again by her sleazy boyfriend, her two well-meaning friends invent a dream guy for her, hoping to cheer her up (and keep her from taking him back). Domineering, sharp-tongued Vivi overrides meek Lane's objections and has Lane help create a MySpace page for "Brandon," then gets her younger brother to pretend to be him while IM'ing Izzy; later Vivi bribes Jonathan, a boy from a neighboring school, to pose as Brandon and ask Isabelle to the prom. Readers can guess that this scheme does not turn out to be as "harmless" as Vivi envisions, especially when she herself falls for Jonathan. In fact, except for a few small twists toward the end, the book follows a predictable course, right down to the girls' personal growth (Lane, for example, finally stands up to Vivi). This would be easier to swallow if Brian's (Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys) characterizations were more imaginative or her prose less standard-issue ("Her logic didn't make her heart hurt any less, and it didn't make the unshed tears recede from her eyes"). Ultimately, the inevitable chaos-and happy ending-may be all that keep readers turning pages. Ages 14-up. (Dec.)

Vivi and Lane have had enough of their friend Isabelle's loser on-again, off-again boyfriend. When he publicly cheats on and dumps Izzy just before prom, the girls decide that they must take action to ensure that the break-up sticks this time. What better way for Izzy to forget Sluttig than to fall for a new guy? Because the supply of guys at their school is nonexistent, they create a MySpace profile for Izzy's perfect guy and convince Vivi's brother Marshall to play "Brandon" online. When it looks like Izzy is still heading back to her ex, the girls decide to hire someone to play "Brandon" in person and to take Izzy to the prom. With a plan like theirs, readers can only expect it to blow up in the girls' faces. The plot, straight out of a teenage soap opera and as predictable as they come, is full of humor and drama that will have teen girls devouring Brian's latest tale. Vivi and Lane are interesting characters who each have their personal side story and their individual chance to narrate events, which keeps readers invested in their lives as well as in their attempts to rescue Izzy from herself. Although the scenarios seem plausible, the characters' reactions border on unrealistic, particularly how quickly the girls forgive each other and how each ends up with her perfect boy. The novel will do well in any collection where Brian's other novels are popular or for libraries that have a lot of chick-lit readers. Reviewer: Alissa Lauzon

Gr 7-10
A light, predictable romp. Vivi, Lane, Isabelle, and Curtis have all been friends since middle school. Vivi is the alpha teen among them, and Lane goes along with her even when she knows better. Both girls are concerned when Isabelle's boyfriend is caught kissing someone else: senior prom is a month away, and Izzy has looked forward to it forever. The two devise a plan for Vivi's slightly geeky brother to contact Izzy on MySpace, playing the role of "Brandon"; at a theater audition, the friends meet and induce Jonathan to be the fake boyfriend in person. While Vivi coaches him to be Izzy's dream date, they fall in love. There's more to the plot, of course, but all's well that ends well in this frothy concoction in which characters are likable and supportive of one another, and not too many product names are dropped. The story is pure sugar, but in a world of fast reads where being nasty is considered cool, a little sweetness is welcome.

I'd been eyeing this book for quite some time before I actually read it. I knew it'd be good (Kate Brian is AMAZING), but I had been judging this book by its cover- something I don't usually do. I kept thinking how DUMB the cover looked, and that it'd be about a girl stalking a guy or something totally crazy like that. While waiting for some other book to come out, I decided to just buy it. I'm glad I did! It wasn't like anything I've ever read before, and I liked that. This book was unpredictable, which means a lot to me. I get so SICK of predicting books' endings! This is an awesome book, and you won't expect anything that happens while two best friends try to create the perfect boyfriend for their other best friend!

Everything goes perfectly for Isabelle Hunter. It always has. Until the day her on-again/off-again boyfriend, Shawn "Sluttig" Littig, breaks up with her. And just a few months away from her prom. Isabelle has been dreaming of the prom for years. She's so obsessed with the prom she's created a notebook that has every last detail of the dream night planned out.

Her friends Lane and Vivi have never approved of Shawn and decide to do whatever they can to keep him out of Isabelle's life permanently. They hatch a plan to create a fake boy on MySpace to divert Isabelle's thoughts from Shawn. Isabelle shows interest in the fictitious Brandon, and so Vivi convinces her younger brother, Marshall, to start chatting with Isabelle on-line.

Soon Isabelle thinks Brandon would be ideal to go to the prom with. The only problem is she doesn't know he doesn't exist! So Vivi and Lane have to come up with a real guy, and quick! The two girls go everywhere to meet the right guy, but to no avail. Only after joining Vivi's mom for some play auditions do they spy the perfect guy, Jonathan. After much coercing, they get Jonathan to join forces with them to be the "real" Brandon. The only catch is that soon Jonathan is showing interest in someone else.

Of course the reader can figure out that there are going to be complications with the story. Only the twists aren't what one would expect! Isabelle thinks about taking Shawn back, Vivi gets confused when her younger brother starts to get cool, Vivi is crushing on someone she shouldn't, and Lane can't get the nerve to tell her friend Curtis she wants to be more than friends.

FAKE BOYFRIEND is another fun read by Ms. Brian. She has hit on another popular topic, using MySpace as the basis for creating a mysterious new boyfriend. The story will not disappoint current fans of Ms. Brian, and should create new ones at the same time!

The book is about three teenagers who are best friends who help each other out through a tough time. Its a believable plot that could happen to any high school student. the story starts off with two teenage girls named Lane and Vivi who are done with their best friend Isabelle's boyfriend Shawn. Shawn is the only person who can change a smart, confident and arrogant girl to a complete mess. But when Shawn gets caught cheating on Isabelle and dumps her just months before prom, that is the last straw for Lane and Vivi they are done with watching their best friend get heart broken over the same guy. Lane and Vivi decided to make a fake MySpace account for a guy under the name "Brandon", the perfect guy for Isabelle to forget about Shawn. "Fake Boyfriend" is a must read for all high school girls. Its a book filled with drama and sass. I really enjoyed the style the writer choose to write the book in, it made me feel like she was a teen watching this all take place before her eyes. It was very easy for me to believe that the characters were real because they seemed like your everyday teenagers; girls who get upset over their boyfriend and their best friends helping them out and then theirs the jerk who could care less about their girlfriends. The protagonist is the book "fake boyfriend" are Isabelle, Lane and Vivi, three best friends who stick by each others side the whole story and the antagonist in the book is Shawn, Isabelle's ex-boyfriend who cheats on her. The events in the story are very believable because it can happen to any teenager and it has happened before. Its a very inspirational book about love, drama, betrayal, friendship and heart break. The exposition of the book start off rather well, it had me hooked after the second page. while the rising action was slow and a little boring, once the climax came i couldn't put the book down. I really liked that the resolution was completely different then i thought it would be, it was astonishing how i thought she was going to fall for one guy but it turns out to be someone completely different. A few parts in the book i figured were going to happen just like the part of Lane and Vivi getting caught by Isabelle about the fake MySpace account. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about drama, love or friendship. "Fake Boyfriend" was a really good book i enjoyed reading it, its a very good book i would recommend it over many other book about drama and love.
