Overview

"Extraordinary writing . . . a not-to-be-missed reading experience."--RT Book Reviews on Against All Odds (4½ stars, Top Pick)

U.S. Marshal Jake Taylor has seen plenty of action during his years in law enforcement. But he'd rather go back to Iraq than face his next assignment: protection detail for federal judge Liz Michaels. His feelings toward the coldhearted workaholic haven't warmed in the five years since she drove her husband--and Jake's best friend--to despair . . . and possible suicide.

As the danger mounts and Jake gets to know Liz better, he's forced to revise his opinion of her. And when it becomes clear that an unknown enemy may want her dead, the stakes are raised. Because now both her life--and his heart--are in danger.

Full of suspense and romance, Fatal Judgment launches a thrilling series featuring three siblings bound by blood and a passion for justice.

Praise for the books of Irene Hannon

"Fast-paced crime drama with an aside of romance . . . [and] an ever-climactic mystery. Hannon's tale is engagingly sure-footed."--Publishers Weekly

"Hannon is a master at character development."--Library Journal

"Superbly written."--Booklist

RITA®-award-winner (and four-time finalist) Irene Hannon is the bestselling author of more than thirty-five novels, including Against All Odds, An Eye for an Eye, and In Harm's Way. A former corporate communications executive with a Fortune 500 company, Irene now writes full time from her home in Missouri.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When U.S. Marshal Jake Taylor returns from Iraq, he is assigned to protect federal judge Liz Michaels. It is an assignment he would rather not take. Liz is the wife of his deceased best friend, and there is no love lost between the pair. Jake blames Liz's workaholic ways for her husband's apparent suicide. But as the threats on Liz's life increase, their feelings begin to change. VERDICT Hannon (In Harm's Way) is a RITA Award winner with over 35 novels to her credit. Her popularity alone requires that libraries purchase this series launch, but the strong character development and story line here will appeal to T. Davis Bunn and Ted Dekker fans.

    Thanks B & N!

Thank you Barnes & Noble for offering some Christian & inspirational choices for the free Friday selection! Just because this type of fiction isn't everybody's cup of tea, does not mean it "sucks" or is "boring", in the words of other posters. I appreciate that there are a variety of genres offered for the free Friday selections, offering something for everybody.

AN ACTION PACKED INSPIRATIONAL ROMANTIC SUSPENSE! A MUST READ!

FATAL JUDGMENT by Irene Hannon is an action packed inspirational romantic suspense set in present day St. Louis. It is the first in the new series "Guardians of Justice". It is well written with depth, details, twists, turns, action packed, and fast paced. It has romance, faith, healing, murder, danger, justice, guilt, survival, mystery, suspense, second chances, love, FBI, special tactual forces, U.S. Marshalls, and redemption. The hero, Jake, is handsome, a U.S. Marshal, assigned to protect a judge, who just happens to have been his best friend's widow. The heroine, Liz, is a federal judge, just had her sister murdered in her house, is assigned to protective custody,in danger, has an unknown enemy and must keep her feeling in check. The police,FBI, U.S.Marshals and other law enforcement agency detail is amazing and adds authenticity to the story. This is a fast paced, page turning story of second chances, changing opinions, high stakes, life or death situation, finding peace with ones own actions and finding faith again during times of turmoil and trouble. This author has done it again with this story packed full of suspense and romance. Read the book

I wish people would appreciate different genres and not be so judgmental. Try reading with an open mind. We had to do that in high school and they called it getting an education!

Hannon's Crime Drama is back and BETTER than ever!

Warning! This book is fatally hazardous to ones sleep! True to the description on the back of the book, the book keeps the reader turning the pages long, long, long into the night. Each turn of the page brings fast paced suspenseful crime blended with tender romance. It lasts through out the book (starting immediately from the first sentence!) until the very last page. Thus, the fatal hazard to the readers sleep. You will NOT be able to, or even want to, put it down. And, the good thing is, this is book 1 in Hannon's newest series, Guardians of Justice, so we will get more of this awesome crime drama!

The characters in this book are all unique in their own way, each with their own struggles, and I fell in love with each one of them. This book, and it's wonderfully molded characters, absolutely gripped me and pulled me directly into the plot. I felt on many occasions that I, myself, was Judge Michaels, and it was I whom the killer was intent on killing! My heart pounded with all the action and each new twist in the case of fatal judgement was definitely edge-of-seat, breath gasping material!

While I connected with Liz, it was Jake Taylor that really stood out and pulled me in. His devotion to his cases, his love for those around him, really stood out. His meaningful character was the depth of this awesome story, especially as he learned to rely on God wholly once again!

I definitely, hands down, recommend this better-than-TV-crime-dramas book. Five stars and then some, you'll fall in love with Hannon's faith-filled, romantic, action packed novels. And, if you're already a Hannon fan, this is a MUST, MUST, MUST read to add to your shelves!

Its a really cute story. Not overly steamy but it developed nicely. Great potential in supporting characters too! I'd read another.

    Good Story

Irene Hannon sure can write a compelling story! Her research impresses me, and her characters are quite believable. From cover to cover, this story demanded my full attention; I could not allow any interruptions.

I have one complaint, however; the author writes in sentence fragments, which throws off this retired English teacher. I guess it's her style, but I prefer complete sentences.

Nevertheless, this is a book worth reading, and I recommend it heartily.

Thank you to Donna Hausler of Baker Publishing Group for my copy. This is one Christian fiction that I think most readers will enjoy.

    Sweet

This book, to me, was a nice change of pace. Its too bad the last few reviews seemed to target more to a disapointment in b&n than the author. This isnt super steamy which woul have been nice but i like the draw between the charachters.

"Fatal Judgment" Superb writing and story

I have just had the pleasure of reading a wonderful selection from The Crossing Book Club, entitled "Fatal Judgment", by Irene Hannon. Hannon has written a novel/story of intrigue, drama, hope, compassion and fear, all rolled up into one fantastic novel. The main characters in my opinion, are a U.S. Deputy Marshal by the name of Jake Taylor, who is charged with protecting a Federal judge, by the name of Liz Michaels, following the murder of the judge's sister. Was the murder intended to be that of Liz Michaels sister, or was there another intention. Until that question can be answered, Taylor must protect this Federal Judge at all costs.

There is also another twist to the protective detail. This Federal Judge and the U.S. Marshal have a past. Michaels was married to a now dead friend of Taylor's and the reasons for his death are yet unclear to Taylor or Michaels. Jake must attempt to put his feelings aside in order to do his job and protect Liz Michaels from harm and possible death.

Follow the characters as the story unfolds right through the conclusion. This story is riveting and as the reader, I have a feeling you won't be able to close this book until you have finished it completely.

Irene Hannon is a wonderful writer and "Fatal Judgment" is a testament to her abilities and determination. Bravo Irene Hannon. I for one will most certainly be reading more of her work. Thank you so much.

    Great read

Irene Hannon is a new author for me, I down loaded this simply because it was the free Friday book this week and the overview sounded like it would be something I would enjoy. This was a great read I was hooked from the first chapter could not put it down. It was fast passed and kept my interest the entire book. I can't wait to read the second book in The Guardians of Justice Series. I will be recommending her to all my friends. I also look forward to readimg the Quantico Series.

    Word wise

This is an interesting book. The characters are well written, and traverse many backrounds. The good guys all had some type of poor choices in their past, which is true to life. Even the bad guy had some redeaming qualities, which made him more real. The plot is well thought out, though it could have been tweaked to be slightly shorter. I skipped some to get to the better parts in the last 50 or so pages. Mostly my interest was on the page I was reading and not projected into another part of the book. I found this CHRISTIAN SUSPENCE NOVEL quite enjoyable. I appreciate the chance to read a book without having to skip pages of trashy sexual scenes that add nothing pertinant to the plot. I did not feel as though the book was "preachy" in any way. In times of stress real people often turn to their God to bolster their strength. It seems logical that well written stressed book characters would do likewise. I likes that the author reinforced the theme that people change. Sometimes in one direction, sometimes in another. In some places its spelled out, in others it is understood, but it is a theme that was well developed. From my viewpoint the book was a success. It kept my interest. It had believable characters, and was written for an adult audience. The fact there wasn't a lot of sexual content also makes it a good read for adolecents.

    I Also Recommend:

A Thrill Packed Ride That Must be Checked Out!

Irene Hannon in her new book "Fatal Judgment" the first book in her new series, Guardians Of Justice published by Revell Books takes us into the world of the U. S. Marshals. The focus this time is on Jake Taylor, a Deputy Marshal just recently come home to St. Louis.

One of the duties of the U. S. Marshals is to protect judges. Federal judge Liz Michaels' sister has just been killed in the judge's home and it is possible that the murderer meant to kill the judge instead of the sister. From that point on the hunt is on for the murderer and to protect Judge Michaels until then. However the forensic evidence is slim and time is quickly passing with limited results.

Jake Taylor and Judge Michaels know each other because the Judge married Jake's best friend who, possibly, committed suicide. Jake is not all that happy about being in charge of her protection but he is a professional and will do the job he has been assigned to. However, being in such close proximity causes Jake to re-evaluate the information his friend had given him about the judge thus developing their romance.

The judge is kidnapped and the good guys have no clue as to his identity. Time is running short with Liz's life in great jeopardy and this thriller becomes more and more exciting with the last hundred pages being an extremely wild ride. All I can say is imagine going on a roller coaster the beginning of the ride is nothing until you get to the top and experience that first drop then it is nothing but twists, turns, upside down loops until the ride ends. This is what Ms. Hannon does to us as readers with this book.

In addition to the nerve-wracking suspense there is also the wonderful theme of judgment and why we should not judge others. Almost every character in this book has made a judgment against another and how those judgments affect them is incredible to witness. God tells us that we should not judge simply because we do not ever have all the facts and we cannot be dispassionate. God, on the other hand, knows everything and can deliver a just judgment. I think this is Irene Hannon's best work so far and this book is just the beginning of the new series.

This is a fun read, it is a fast read, however I do not recommend starting this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. Ms. Hannon is an excellent writer and knows how to twist your nerve endings as she tightens the suspense. I recommend this book, and everything else that Ms. Hannon has written, highly!!

    Mediocre at best

Not a bad book, but strictly formula mystery. Pretty ho-hum. I usually enjoy series books, but probably won't be following this one.

Some good points - but didn't work for me

I love romantic suspense - as long as the story moves at a good pace.

'Fatal Judgment' is a near miss. The writing was professional, but there wasn't enough conflict to keep me interested. I started skimming in the 6th chapter - and quit reading after Chapter 9.

I did like the fact the hero had brothers and a sister. It was a refreshing change from the 'lone wolf' Alpha. I even liked the fact the characters talked about religion and going to church. That earned 2 stars.

However, the story didn't work for me.
