KLIATT - Amanda MacGregor
Haley can't quite put her finger on it, but for some reason her mother's new boyfriend Larry makes her uncomfortable. She keeps her feelings to herself, not wanting to upset her mom. Her best friend Lynn seems to be maturing faster than Haley, and Haley worries she's being left behind. She tries to muster up some interest in Lynn's new boyfriend, but she think he's a loser and that Lynn is moving too fast with him. But all of these worries seem like nothing when Larry forces himself on Haley. In a graphic scene of sexual assault, Larry molests Haley and is only stopped by her mother's unexpected arrival home. Before Larry leaves Haley's room, he makes it clear that he will kill her if she tells her mother, and convinces her that her mother wouldn't believe her anyway. After all, Larry says, Haley came on to him. As time passes, Haley starts to believe this herself. Thinking she must've provoked him, she chalks it all up to a bad misunderstanding. She feels pathetic to now be so scared of Larry and tells herself she's making a big deal over nothing. Only after she starts to understand that Larry was totally in the wrong is she able to spill the truth to her mother. Like all of the books in the Orca Soundings series, First Time is fast-paced, with short chapters and high-interest content. Haley's thought process, as she tries to cope alone with what has happened, is heartbreaking. Like Haley, the reader never knows what Larry may do next, and Haley's anxiety over this is palpable. Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
Haley and Lynn are inseparable—until Lynn hooks up with Chad, a hottie who graduated from their school the year before. Then, all bets are off. Even if Lynn and Haley have plans to do something together, Lynn will cancel any time Chad calls. Haley feels like she has lost her best friend and confidante. Things at home are not much better. Haley's mom has a new boyfriend, Larry, and, though he is a nice guy, Haley cannot help feeling a bit uncomfortable around him, especially when he leaves the bathroom door open and she catches a glimpse of him as she passes by. Was it intentional, or did he think he was home alone and just not bother to shut the door? Several days later he attempts to rape her, and Haley gets her answer. Larry threatens her with her life if she ever tells anyone. He also claims that she seduced him and deserves everything she got. Knowing that her mother adores Larry, and confused as to whether she may have sent the wrong signals, Haley keeps quiet. While the attempted rape could have been an important plot line, it is never fully developed and instead the story centers around the relationship between the two girls. Tilly has succeeded in capturing the teen angst experienced when a boy comes between best friends, but as far as story there is not much here to separate this one from run of the mill teen literature. Gr 8 Up

All Haley would like to do is enjoy her junior year of high school with her friend Lynn, who has just bought her first car. However, Lynn's new boyfriend, Chad, ends up taking Haley's place in Lynn's life and passenger seat. With Haley trapped at home, she finds it difficult to avoid her mom's lecherous boyfriend, Larry. One evening, he attacks Haley, and she barely escapes being raped. Her solution is to lock her doors, prompting her mom to think that she is smoking marijuana. To add to Haley's confusion, Lynn is planning to have sex for the first time and needs Haley's help to buy condoms. With her life turned upside down, the teen finds an unexpected ally in Chad's friend Mike. When Haley's mom confronts her about buying condoms, Haley also tells her about Larry's attack. Realistic dialogue and situations characterize this novel. Struggling readers will appreciate the quick pacing and the low reading/high interest level. However, multiple plotlines and an abrupt, unresolved ending are confusing and unsatisfying.-H. H. Henderson, Heritage Middle School, Deltona, FL

"Get off!" I push at him hard, with both hands. The next thing I know, he's pinned my hands over my head. I'm stunned how fast this guy can move. "It seems that we've fallen," he says, like he's talking about the color of his necktie.

FIRST TIME is a fast-paced, intense novel that is sure to keep you guessing and turning its pages.

In 112 pages, the protagonist retells a shocking story with vivid detail and shocking honesty. The story builds slowly at first, crescendoing, coming to an abrupt halt when Larry, Haley's mom's boyfriend, enters her room, when her mom isn't at home.

The plot quickly spirals, while Haley is left alone to fend for herself. She battles with the idea of telling her mother the truth about Larry, but has nobody she can turn to for advice in the meantime.

Her best friend has been swept off her feet by the popular, high school grad who works at the local Dairy Queen (who doesn't even remember her just a day after they meet, after they exchange numbers).

Filled with conflicting emotions, ice cream, and a particularly lonely Teen Night at the local ice skating rink, FIRST TIME is sure to get your pulse going and is definitely worth a read.

Meg Tilly is an up-and-coming author you'll be sure to want to check out.

    Hate it

It was way to short.. i think it should be at least 5 bucks or less.. not worth my money.. the story was good but 100 pages is way too short. It made me feel as is i was reading a story that happen in 4 days and in the end i was left with out an answer i mean what happen next??.. its a good but from 1-10 i would say maybe a 4.
