Jonathan soon becomes Frankenstein's helper and friend but, when Frankenstein's wife and child are brutally murdered, he becomes entangled in a horrific unfolding of events.

Hilary Bailey's gothic prose is constructed with uncanny fidelity to Shelley's original style, as she describes the frightful consequences of Frankenstein's tampering with the laws of nature.

Also included is a foreword by the author that describes how Lord Byron and Mary Shelley each agreed to compete and write "a ghost story" and why Shelley won.

Set in London in 1825, this labored riff on Mary Shelley's horror masterpiece shows the potential pitfalls authors face when writing sequels that take liberties with the plots of literary classics. Jonathan Goodall, a wealthy young Englishman, meets Dr. Victor Frankenstein but knows nothing of the man's infamous past. Then Victor begins to take a passionate interest in Maria Clementi, a music hall singer strangely incapable of speech outside of her stage performances. As Victor labors obsessively to cure Maria's muteness, an unknown assailant launches attacks on him and his family. By keeping the revelations about Victor's experiments in reanimating the dead concealed until the end, Bailey (Cassandra) prolongs the tale's mystery, but at the cost of diminishing the story of the doctor's scientific transgression and its consequences. The full text of Frankenstein, reprinted after Bailey's novel, serves only to show the unique brilliance of Shelley's fantastic novel. (Oct.)

British author Bailey (The Strange Adventures of Charlotte Holmes, 1994, etc.) offers a continuation of the Mary Shelley classic. First published in the U.K. in 1995, the book is told from the perspective of Jonathan Goodall, who recounts his association with Victor Frankenstein. Jonathan meets Victor through mutual friends and the two men quickly develop a rapport, sharing an interest in the origin of languages. Eventually Victor forms a bond with (and displays an unseemly attraction to) a strange and beautiful woman, Maria Clementi, a singer and performer of some renown. When Victor's lovely wife, Elizabeth, and small son are found in Elizabeth's bed with their throats cut, Jonathan can't help but be disturbed by Victor's reaction. While on a mission to solve the killings, Jonathan observes an enormously strong, odd individual near Victor's home. Jonathan is distressed by the monster-like man's insistence that he wants his "bride" and flees in fear from the creature. It isn't until Victor suffers serious injury that the truth of his doings is revealed. Bailey displays a competent understanding of Shelley's original tale in this inventive narrative. Bonus: For those who need a refresher, the text of Frankenstein is also included.

Meet the Author

A native of England, Hilary Bailey was educated in thirteen schools before attending Cambridge. Married with children, she entered the world of 1960s science fiction, writing some twenty tales that were published in Britain, the USA, France and Germany. Her first novel was published in 1975 and she has since authored ten more.
