Hundreds of practical and effective suggestions for sobriety and recovery.
Over a million copies sold -- this book is endorsed by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, by 'dear Abby' (''this book should be read by everyone''), and by Melody Beattie (author of 'Codependent No More') who said "'Getting Them Sober' is the BEST book for families of the still-drinking alcoholic.''

FROM THE INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK----- "While the alcoholic lies passed out, anesthetized, the family goes through the years of his drinking --- stark, raving sober. They believe lies, expect miracles, have him locked up, bail him out, wish he were dead, and pray that he gets home safely. If the spouse of the alcoholic changes his or her behavior, as outlined in this book, the alcoholic has an 80 percent better chance to get sober."

If you live with an Alcoholic, Please read this!

If you live with someone who drinks more than you would like, read this book. You aren't crazy. If you go to Al-anon because you have a loved-one who drinks, read this book. It will supplement what you are learning. No matter who you are, if someone in your life drinks or has in the past, read this book. The Them in the title is you! You don't have to live in the crazy any longer. Even if you can't, won't, or aren't able to remove the alcoholic from your life, you can live in sanity.
I read and re-read often. I love this book! And the others that follow it as well.

    Missing a chapter

I wanted to amend my previous review but couldn't figure out how. Get a paperback version of this. Besides having wretched formatting and tons of errors, I am missing the last two chapters. Whoever cleared this for released needs to be sacked. I would return this version if at all pissible, and intend on sending a complaint to both B&N and the author's website. Terrible!

Goid Information, Way Too Many Typos

I would have given it four stars but the proof reading was so poor on the ebook edition that it made reading it very challenging and distracting. There are multiple randon characters that at first you think are a shorthand for something, then it becomes clear they are simply uncaught typos. I have ordered the print edition hoping they did a better job.

The information set forth here is primarily written for the spouse and is the same concepts are taught at Al-Anon meeting. If is concise and written on a level that anyone regardless of education level will find easy to read. As a parent of an adult alcoholic who I also work with in the family business, I wish it had more from a parent's perspective.

There is alot of practical information in this book, many examples that are on point of how I have related to and reacted towards my alcoholic husband. I felt like someone had watched me over the years and jotted down all that I have been through and tried. The book itself suffered from editing issues on every other page and a lack of citations for factual and statistical references. I feel like I have started practicing some of the principles in this book prior to reading it by simply "letting go, and letting God."

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    One of the "all-time classic!"

There is a very good reason why this book is considered by many, to be a "Classic" and why it is strongly endorsed by "Dear Abby", Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and Melody Beattie, author of "Codependent No More".

Toby Rice Drews writes as if she were your friend sitting across from you in your kitchen--as a friend and also wife of an addict/alcoholic who has "been there herself" and who has helped millions of family members successfully find their way through the baffling maze of the world of addiction.

This book will give you hope, along with practical illustrations and ideas--to educate and empower you to move forward with confidence.

We, at Changing Lives Foundation, buy "Getting Them Sober" by the caseload and often send this book, FREE--along with "Why Don't They Just Quit?"(Book & DVD) to Al-Anon families that we counsel with--who just don't know where to begin."

''the BEST book for the family''

Melody Beattie says this book is ''the BEST book for the family of the still-drinking alcoholic''.
It's important that the author is both a mental-health professional (trains counselors throughout the U.S. for 30 years) and also has ''been there'', as a family member who's lived with alcoholics.
The long and short of it is that this book is full of hundreds of practical and effective ways to help the alcoholic to want to get sober. It works. It really works. It is amazing.
