Two more feathered favorites hit the board book scene in Gossie and Gossie & Gertie by Olivier Dunrea. In our Best Books citation, PW wrote, "Preschoolers cannot help but recognize themselves in the guise of two irresistible goslings, who star in a pair of handsize volumes about friendship, sharing and budding independence." (Houghton, $6.95 each 32p ages 3-5 ISBN 978-0-618-74791-7; 978-0-618-74793-1; Feb.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Sarah Seage
Gossie is a precious yellow gosling who we meet as she sticks her neck into the first clean white page of this small book. Gossie loves to wear bright red boots every day. Each of the pages in this board book version contains a short sentence describing what Gossie does each day in her lovely boots. She stomps uphill and downhill and in the rain and in the snow. One morning, however, Gossie cannot find her prized boots. She looks all over, only to discover them on the feet of another gosling! Now Gossie is a gosling who loves to wear her boots almost every day—we see her traipsing off with her friend Gertie, each wearing one boot. The simple, bright watercolor illustrations are cheerful and sweet. The small format of the book makes it an easy book to hold, especially while snuggling a toddler in your lap and reading over his or her head.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Two books that are sure to become favorites because they tap into quintessential preschool experiences. In the first book, Gossie's red boots are missing. When they are found on the feet of Gertie, a smaller gosling, Gossie ends up sharing them. In the second story, Gertie is back, this time with blue boots of her own. She follows Gossie and does everything Gossie says, for a while. When she begins to do her own thing, her friend gets upset. By the end, the tables turn and Gertie leads Gossie to the food bowl, which they share, struggles forgotten. Dunrea's texts use easy words and simple, repetitive sentences, with a little bit of rhyming when it fits: "She wears them when she rides. She wears them when she hides" (Gossie). The ink-and-watercolor illustrations add little details that will reward observant children, such as a small insect in the background. Gossie's rural world is reassuringly child-sized, clear, and contained, as indicated by simple lines, primary colors, and focused illustrations on a white background. Because of the books' small size they will be better for one-on-one sharing than for group storytime. Young children will ask to hear these stories again and again, and they're just right for little hands.-Laurie von Mehren, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A sweet and silly pair of tales about an eccentric gosling and her newfound friend. In Gossie, Dunrea (Bear Noel, 2000, etc.) describes the fashionable fowl's favorite pastime: strutting about in her snazzy red rainboots. Yet, when her boots mysteriously disappear one day, Gossie sets out to locate them-only to discover a kindred spirit in fellow gosling Gertie. Despite her adoration of her footwear, Gossie amends her perception of high fashion, determining that it's more fun to share accessories with a friend than to be perfectly attired but all alone. Gossie & Gertie chronicles the loving relationship of the best pals. Clad in bright red and blue boots, respectively, Gossie and Gertie gallivant about in tandem: wherever Gossie wanders, Gertie is sure to follow. However, when Gertie ventures out on her own, Gossie learns the benefits of letting her friend occasionally take the lead. Dunrea's tales are simply wrought and rendered, with the ink and watercolor illustrations capturing the quaint, whimsical charm of the stories. Situated against stark white backgrounds, the bright-hued vignettes communicate an abundance of expression in a few deft strokes. The potent combination of toddler-appealing story lines and the charismatic charm of the illustrations assure that these smartly clad geese will be marching straight into the hearts of readers. The colors are bright and engaging with drawings that are simple but very expressive with cute details. The story is simple enough that our 2 year old grandson can now "read" most pages himself. The book contains a subtle lesson about friends and sharing, but the lesson is accessible even to this young audience.

My son has always loved these books! He was interested in them when he was an infant and now as a toddler. He says words he may not have learned in other books...like snail, mole, bee and of course the characters names. It also helped with animal sounds and opposites. We hope to see new characters and books come out in this series!

Gossie and her red boots are a hit with my 4 year old. Good text and story with the repetitive "every day" but the adorable illustrations seal the deal.

Excellent book! My kids love to read it over and over. But, I was disappointed with the size. I was expecting a library sized book, but it was the size of a small board book.

This book is requested repeatedly. Dunrea has a good grasp of the small child's interests. This board book was purchased in the store. It is made of durable materials. I previously tried purchased a set of 5 board books from this series online. The quality of the board used was very disappointing. Apparently, board can be of variable thickness.

My daughter loved this book! She had bright pink boots and we were trying to learn the concept of sharing and this book was perfect.

My husband picked this book out for our son, who was 18 months at the time. This book has always been one of his favorites and he is now 2! This is a very nice addition to any child's library.

As someone who works professionally with young children and parents daily, I think this is a great book, especially for teaching prepositions. Gossie looks under, inside, etc. for her red rubber boots- which she wears EVERY day. This is a very good book for toddlers.
