Overview

One cold November night when Kat Kominski was fifteen years old, she and some friends held up a convenience store. In the heat of the moment, one of the others shot and killed an off-duty cop moonlighting as a security guard. Kat and her pals fled the scene in a panic, and no one was caught.

Thirteen years later, Kat - now Kate White - has built a new life for herself. Now a single mom with a nine-year-old son, she works as a prosecutor in the Philadelphia DA’s office. But her dark past returns to haunt her when she walks into court one day and has a devastating encounter with a prisoner, Mario Castellanos, one of her companions from that terrible night.

Hardcore criminal Mario is facing a possible sentence of twenty years. He lets Kate know that he is counting on her, his old friend turned prosecutor, to make sure he goes free instead. If Kate doesn’t do what he wants, he’ll claim she was the one who killed the off-duty cop.

Kate is in a bind: If the truth about her past gets out, she stands to lose everything, including her son. But she can’t do what Mario wants, either. As Mario ups his demands, blackmailing and terrorizing her, she is forced to turn for protection to a sexy homicide detective, Tom Braga, who suspects her of…something. The two clash repeatedly as Tom keeps digging into her past, trying to learn the truth.

Then another, far more menacing, threat rears its head, and Kate realizes that her life - and her son’s - are in terrible danger. Frantic, she sees that she has nowhere to turn. Except, maybe, to Tom….

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In this scintillating romantic thriller from bestseller Robards (Obsession), Kate White, a single mother and Philadelphia ADA, is embarrassed in court when her cellphone goes off during a trial. Just then the defendantA pulls out a pistol and starts shooting, killing the judge. The terror-stricken Kate fears for her life and the future of her young son, Ben, should she die in the melee. After being taken hostage, Kate escapes, supposedly by killing her captor. Kate soon discovers that her past as a troubled foster child has caught up to her. Someone tries to break into her home, while someone else follows her, threatening her and Ben. Det. Tom Braga, who investigates the courtroom shooting, is firmly convinced that Kate didn't kill her captor. Kate's vulnerability appeals to Tom's protective nature, drawing the pair together in a heated affair. Robards once again shows her flair for coupling first-rate suspense with multidimensional characters. (Apr.)

    Riveting

Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Kate White prosecutes her first case in court when embarrassingly her cellphone chimes. Judge Michael Moran ¿the moron¿ tells her to shut it now Kate worries her young son Ben needs her when the shots are fired by the defendant ¿Little¿ Julie Soto. Moran is dead with his head blown off and two other prisoners join in the melee. Soto abducts Kate to allegedly use as a hostage while escaping.-------------- Kate manages to escape while believing she killed Soto in doing so. However, she is not free as someone stalks her and Ben even breaking into their home. Philadelphia Police Detective Tom Braga leads the official investigation into the courtroom murder and its aftermath. He thinks Kate¿s escape was planned by her captors and that Soto lives. As he tries to keep the single mom and her son safe, Tom begins to connect the dots leading back to when 1994 Baltimore when fifteen years old Katrina Kominski was part of the foster care system.----------- This exciting urban thriller works because the audience believes that fully developed Kate and Ben are in deep trouble, and that Tom feels a deep need to protect them from Soto and who knows who else. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Kate¿s cellphone rings a Pussycat Dolls tune and never slows down until the final biting confrontation. Karen Robards provides a strong entertaining romantic suspense.----------- Harriet Klausner

    Boring!

The first part is fantastic but it seems to go on way too long without much happening. I found myself very irritated at the main character.
I just found it going way too slowly for my taste and not at all typical of Karen Robards' other books.

    Excellent read

A real page turner, it grabbed you in the beginning and didn't let go. What a terrible bind Kate White found herself in when faced with her past. I finished this book in one day, couldn't wait to get to the ending. Intense all the way. A must read.

Another great book from Karen Robards!

I love all of Karen Robards books and this one is another excellent book from her. I could hardly put it down. I consider myself very picky when it comes to reading Romantic Suspense because I've read so many. 'Guilty' is one of the best. It is definitely a keeper and I would recommend it to anyone.

    Guilty - Karen Robards

If you want to a book that captures your interest, this is the book. The characters in this book are really developed. As you read, the author keeps you in suspense and you will be surprised when get to the end. As you turn each page, This book will make you think if secrets is worth keeping if you are being backmailed. I like the way she pulled it altogether at the end. Bottomline, great book. It is a must have if you like a good suspense that keeps you guessing.

    "Guilty" pleasure?

Fast, enjoyable read. A little exciting, a little romantic, a great beach book. I'd read another of her books in between heavier ones.

    A good and quick read

I took this book on a recent train trip. It was a good choice. A page turner, a good plot, and an easy read much like Patterson. I will buy other books by this author.

    Annoying

This book simply annoyed me. The main character was supposed to be an intelligent, competent woman who made a life for herself in spite of a terrible childhood. And yet, the author has the "heroine" making one bad decision after another. Worse than that - although the heroine is supposed to be an attorney, a prosecutor - these bad decisions involve aiding and abetting criminals while hiding the truth from law enforcement. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who likes the main characters to be likeable and honest.
