Monsters, ghouls, and other creatures say goodnight to their parents in this Halloween-themed bedtime story. A skeleton child offers a "Clickity-clackity-clack-clack!" while a witch giggles "Hee! Hee! Hee!" Given Cushman's cartoony illustrations, readers might be surprised by how poetic his verse is: "If you were a skeleton in a graveyard of stones,/ Clacking and rattling all your dry, bleached-out bones,/ Yawning a yawn in the ivory moonlight,/ How would you tell your bony daddy good night?" On the final spread, the monster's goodnights join those in various world languages--a fun if somewhat incongruous detail. Ages 4–7. (July)
Children's Literature
Even ghosts and ghoulies say good night to their parents and Cushman presents a veritable parade of little monsters being tucked in at night. The rhyming verse for the most part flows well as the creature from the Black Lagoon says "glug, glug," the skeleton in the graveyard wishes his little one a "clickety-clackety-click-clack" and Daddy werewolf tucks his child in with a cheerful "Yowwll!" The cleverest pairing is the Egyptian mom saying good night in hieroglyphs and the Martian mommy whispering a sweet alien good night. The accompanying watercolor illustrations are the best feature and while kids will find the text pedestrian they may be amused by the detailed illustrations that have just the right amount of scariness. Definitely not a first purchase and most libraries will not miss it. A lukewarm endorsement at best. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

A rhymed verse introduces each little monster, then word bubbles say good night in various ways. Werewolves "yowwll," creatures of the Black Lagoon "glug," mummies speak in hieroglyphs, and ghosts "boo." They all say different things but the end result is the same. It's the illustrations that take this title beyond a simple bedtime book. The watercolor and ink drawings are colorful and clever. Each scene has an appropriate background for young sleepers. Some sleep in the woods, under water, in midair, or in space capsules. The delightful illustrations make these seasonal monsters not-so-scary for very young readers.
