This book, along with others by this publisher, was produced to help parents, teachers and children of all ages deal with and prevent violence in their lives. It provides thirty pages of alternatives for using your hands in ways other than for hitting. Using colorful, multicultural, cartoon-like drawings and minimal text, the book proceeds through a litany of activities for using your hands, such as drawing, making finger puppets, blowing bubbles and building. Negative feelings that often lead to hitting, as well as how it feels to be hit are validated, and alternatives are encouraged. Several pages of advice for parents are offered, along with activities to further understanding. The book includes resources for more information about violence and its alternatives, and a hotline number for suspected abuse. Meet the Author

Martine Agassi, Ph.D., is a clinical therapist with extensive experience as a behavioral consultant, counseling children and families in schools, residential facilities, foster care, and private practice. She has led workshops and group counseling in communication skills, parenting, drug and child abuse prevention, divorce, and self-esteem. Martine, her husband, and their daughter live in Fallbrook, California, with their dog Toby.

Marieka Heinlen launched her career as a children’s book illustrator with the award-winning Hands Are Not for Hitting. As a freelance illustrator and designer, Marieka focuses her work on books and other materials for children, teens, parents, and teachers. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with her husband and son.

    Hands Are Not For Hitting

    I purchased this book for my son as he moved into an older class in his daycare that had a lot of hitting going on. As we read through this book he knows each page and says to me little things about what I am reading. When I say hands are not for hitting they are for ... he yells hi! and waves his hand hello. He is not even two yet and totally understands. I also recommend Teeth Are Not For Biting by the same author.

    simple book with a lesson for toddlers

    This is a really cute book that hit home for our 2 1/2 year old about learning not to use hands for hitting.

    Gets the job done!

    Excellent book and really brings home the point. After reading this book 3 times, my 2 1/2 yr old boy didn't hit again. It was very effective.

    Recently our cat hissed and swung at him and my son, now 3, told me to read the 'Hands are not for Hitting' book to the cat! Really!

    Great Teaching Book

    Great book! Really helped my son, who has autism, visualize why he should not hit. It explains and illustrates what good things our hands can do.

    Son loves this

    My son loves this book. It is simple, to the point and has wonderful illustrations and colors. I wish there were more of these.

    Excellent Resource

    This book is a wonderful resource for parents that have children that hit. I was having problems with my 3yr old hitting other children. I believe that this book helped her to understand how hitting makes other people feel and that hands are not for hitting. I would highly recommend this book to parents or caregivers that are having this problem with small children.
