It has been estimated by etymologists that every human being on the face of the Earth has two hundred million insect counterparts living somewhere on the planet. With so vast an array of diverse life one could posit the notion that the world belongs to the insects and that we are mere fellow travelers playing a supporting role in their world. Hey There, Stink Bug takes the form of that perspective and offers youngsters a poetic and informative glimpse into the world of insects. In this book readers are given a three-fold introduction to some of the more common insects that surround us. The author begins each section with various forms of poetry that focus on some aspect of insect life. The poems are then followed by a brief factual discussion of the premises introduced by the verse. Each poem is also accompanied by colorful illustrations of aspects of life in the world of insects. Taken as a whole, Hey There, Stink Bug is a clever attempt to chronicle fascinating insect lore in a way that will appeal to younger readers. The illustrations and scientific discussions, in particular, are designed in such a way as to capture the reader’s interest. The poetry itself is somewhat uneven in quality and may well be the weakest feature of this publication. Nevertheless, as insects are intriguing, so too is this illustrated work which touches upon the secret life of creatures we encounter every day but generally ignore.— Greg M. Romaneck
