Overview

Set on a Bengali noble's estate in 1908, this is both a love story and a novel of political awakening. The central character, Bimala, is torn between the duties owed to her husband, Nikhil, and the demands made on her by the radical leader, Sandip. Her attempts to resolve the irreconciliable pressures of the home and world reflect the conflict in India itself, and the tragic outcome foreshadows the unrest that accompanied Partition in 1947.

    The Home and the World

The Home and the World by Rabindranath Tagore is a book that reveals the complications of the most sacred relationships. There are three central characters, Bimala, her husband Nikhil, and the activist, Bimala's lover, Sandip. The book is written from the perspective of all the three characters which helps the reader understand each of their obligations, morals and their goals. Over all this novel is a good novel. Readers may find the first half uneventful but as the story unfolds itself it gets more interesting.
