Children's LiteratureDave, Erik and Mike enjoy exploring the waterways and woods surrounding their home. All of the boys are skilled at operating the boats and skiffs that are a part of the fishing trade. Their parents all trust them to explore safely, while always reminding them to be home by dark. Danger can come at any turn when you are out on the water after dark. When Mike's dad buys him a new boat, the kids cannot wait to get it out on the water. After a few bad choices, they find themselves in the middle of a storm that they cannot outrun. Erik's dad, who is an accomplished boater, comes to their rescue. The main adventure of the story, however, comes from a chance encounter with Gary, a retired logger who lives alone. The mysteries that are unraveled by the young boys will keep the reader involved up until the last page. This is a great story to involve adolescent boys and will be appropriate at the high school level for reluctant readers. 2005, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 12 to 14.
