Since Reaper-Jones has the crime-solving abilities of a small kitten distracted by a ball of yarn, the heavy lifting goes to a new character, Edgar Freezay, formerly of the Psychical Bureau of Investigation. He quickly upstages the supposed protagonist, reducing her to a mere Watson in her own book. Both new and returning readers will be turned off by Calliope’s shallowness and ineptitude, and feminists may take particular issue with her overreliance on considerably more competent men. Meet the Author

AMBER BENSON co-created, co-wrote, and directed the animated supernatural web-series Ghosts of Albion with Christopher Golden, followed by a series of novels including Witchery and Accursed, and the novella Astray. Benson and Golden also co-authored the novella The Seven Whistlers. As an actress, she has appeared in dozens of roles in feature films, TV movies, and television series, including the fan favorite role of Tara Maclay on three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Benson wrote, produced, and directed the feature films Chance and Lovers, Liars, and Lunatics.

    fun murder mystery

    Unlike the first 3 books which were fairly straight foward urban-fantasy style action, this is a locked-room murder mystery in the style of Agatha Christie and similar. A body, a host of suspects, and giant mansion set the stage. It walks nicely between providing details to let the reader solve some points, and holding back for the great reveal in the end. Like a good mystery some parts you can guess, and some parts you have to wait for. Really good, solid, read.

    Under the spell

    Amber Benson continues to shine and entertain with this latest venture into Death's Daughter series. Calliope is a woman that others can connect to being thrown into danger and intrigue while trying to keep her world from coming apart around her. add in the romance and comedy aspects and How to Be Death is a must read. Applause to Amber Benson and eagerly await the next book in the series.
