Overview

Twelve-year-old March Anne Tanner’s life is tied to the simple rhythms and cycles of the watermelon farm in Jubilee, Georgia, that she has grown up on. Thanks to Grenna, her grandmother and surrogate mother, March Anne has learned everything she needs to know about seeds, vine pruning, and harvesting melons and pumpkins. And although Grenna has tried to teach March Anne about her ancestors, March Anne has always been uncomfortable with the family name she’s been given and doesn’t like. And so, in secret meetings deep in the woods, March Anne and her two best friends form the Pseudonymphs, whose names change with the seasons.

When Grenna suffers a heart attack, March Anne must face an uncertain future and confront her past. In the middle of it all, a ruby-throated hummingbird decides to winter at the Tanners’ and becomes a source of delight and inspiration as March Anne prepares for Grenna’s passing and journeys toward self-acceptance.

This sweet and tangy debut introduces a memorable cast of characters who come to learn that grace can abide within and beyond the realities of pain and loss.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
March Anne Tanner lives on a watermelon farm in Jubilee, Georgia, with her father, brother, and her beloved grandmother, Grenna. She is a typical twelve- year-old with girlfriends, chores, pets, science projects, and a budding interest in Benjamin, the boy with chocolate-brown eyes. Harvesting watermelons, taking hayrides, and cooking marshmallows over a bonfire set the tone for her idyllic life. Grenna's heart attack forces March to realize that she will soon lose her as she lost her mother nine years earlier. Grenna loves hummingbirds, so when one postpones its migration to winter outside her window, the family name it Zipp and work around the clock to keep it humming. Upon Grenna's death, March must come to terms with her grief and loss for both her grandmother and mother. March is a most loveable protagonist. Who would not be drawn to a young lady who calls a botched batch of pumpkin preserves "homemade super glue" or watermelon seeds "flat black teardrops"? This debut novel is written so lyrically that reading it with a glass of lemonade in hand feels appropriate. Reviewer: Kathie Fitch
KLIATT
This novel is attuned to the seasons of life on a watermelon farm in Jubilee, Georgia, where 11-then-12-year-old March Anne Tanner lives with her father, younger brother and Grenna (grandmother). Both her mother and grandfather are dead, and she, along with her two best friends, who all hate their names (of course), meet periodically deep in the forest as Pseudonymphs and give themselves new and secret names used only among themselves. As the seasons progress, the watermelon and pumpkins are planted, harvested, sold, culled for seeds, and then the farm lies fallow over the winter. March Anne and her friends perform their rituals according to the signs of nature, the swirling of seedpods from a tree, the cry of a whippoorwill, the maturing of the watermelons. She hears messages in the cry of the train whistles and listens to her Grenna's stories about the past, although sometimes the stories hide more than they reveal. She loves her father, who works hard on the struggling farm and relies on him and her grandmother for love, security, and good cooking, until Grenna's heart attack causes her to decline and slowly die. March Anne becomes interested, as she ripens, in a boy and their relationship builds. The novel is a call to notice nature's bounty as well as the story of a search for identity; and it reveals much about the hard work and simple life on a farm in rural Georgia. Charmingly told, the pace is slow but as compelling as the return of spring. No explosions or riots here—just appreciation for seasonal rhythms and the blessings of an orderly but verdant world. Gr 4-7

Twelve-year-old March Anne expects this summer to be like all others-spending time with her girlfriends, helping on the family's Georgia watermelon farm, and learning from her grandma, who has been raising March Anne and her brother since their mother died nine years ago. But in July, the girl's world is turned upside down when Grenna suffers a heart attack and is bedridden. March Anne valiantly tries to cook the dinners, but her misadventures only serve to highlight the void that her grandmother's absence will leave. Things gradually settle down, and March Anne regales Grenna with stories about school, especially the antics of three previously irritating boys. When Grenna insists that a hummingbird has stayed for the winter, March Anne assumes her grandmother is "wonky," but the creature soon makes itself known, remaining nearby until the February day when Grenna passes on. Afterward, March Anne must come to terms with her grief not only for her grandmother, but also for her mother. Her friends are there to help, and her family draws closer as her father opens up about his repressed heartache over his wife. While the vocabulary is poetic, the Southern idioms and clichés are exaggerated, and March Anne's first-person narration never entirely engages readers. The tone is somewhat saccharine and preachy, and the themes are presented with a heavy hand. An additional novel about friendship and loss.-Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

Kirkus Reviews
When confronted with loss, a pre-teen in rural Georgia learns to take nothing for granted. Growing up on a farm surrounded by acres of green watermelon and pumpkin vines, 12-year-old March Anne Tanner feels one summer's like every other-something she takes "for granite." Life on the Tanner farm follows the pattern of the seasons. March Anne and her two best friends in the Pseudonymphs club even change their names seasonally. March Anne's grandmother, Grenna, has raised her since her mother died. Flitting about like a busy hummingbird, Grenna knows everything about growing watermelons, making pumpkin preserves and Tanner family history. Grenna's unexpected heart attack during the summer triggers March Anne's own loss over her mother. As March Anne watches Grenna decline, she must confront her past before she can accept the present. Paralleling the passing of the seasons, this debut novel tenderly portrays the cycle of life with its attendant joy and grief from the perspective of a down-to-earth heroine. Warm family fare. March Anne Tanner has grown up on a watermelon farm in Jubilee, Georgia, raised by her grandma, Grenna, and her father. She doesn't know too much about her ancestors, or rocks, or what to do when Grenna suffers from a heart attack.

The only thing she knows is watermelons. But she soon learns that not everything is expected and sometimes, those things you don't think matter, matter most.

Though you may think so from the summary and title, HUMMINGBIRD is not all about watermelons or even hummingbirds. It's about life, love, loss, and friendship. It's about learning about other people to recognize who you really are.

It's a novel that I absolutely loved with one exception - it drags in the middle. Despite that, though, I definitely recommend it.

    Hummingbird by Kimberly Greene Angle

Twelve-year-old March Anne Tanner has grown up on a farm in Jubilee, Georgia, keenly attuned to nature. Through her eyes we experience the simple majesty of her seasonal life from summertime katydids to a unique gift of a wintertime hummingbird named Zipp. March Anne¿s life has always been predictable but as she grows and feels the haunting call of the lonesome train whistle, things are beginning to change. Her grandmother Grenna, the only mother she and her brother have ever known, suffers a debilitating heart attack, and now she must face an inevitable loss. Throughout the summer and winter season, March Anne and her friends Meg and Laverne, otherwise known as the Pseudonymphs, are all edging towards adolescence and are seeking a sense of identity as their lives begin to unfold before them. However, in the midst of turmoil and confusion, March Anne finally heeds the mysterious call of the train whistle and is led to a deeply touching and heartfelt discovery. This book offers both laughter and tears, and through March Anne¿s journey, the reader experiences a sweet and tender view of life, loss, and grace. A must read for adolescents and adults alike!
