Overview

What's better than a sleepover? A sleepover with makeovers! Sherry and her friends are having an awesome time with eye shadow, glitter, and more hair products than a salon. But when the girls wake up the next morning with serious skin issues, Sherry is freaked. Someone tampered with her makeup!
It turns out that the mall's cosmetics kiosk—where Junie's cousin Amber works—has had lots of products returned by upset customers. Sherry's determined to get to the bottom of things. After all, she's become a bit of a crime-solving celebrity (well, at least in the spirit world). Ghost academies around the world are impressed by Sherry and her ghost mom's skills.
And if anyone can solve a mystery involving mascara, it's Sherry Holmes Baldwin.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—In this third book about Sherry Baldwin and her mother, a deceased cop who is now a ghost detective, Sherry finds herself at the center of another mystery when her sleepover guests have a bad reaction to face cream she bought at the mall's new makeup kiosk. Was it just a bad batch or is someone sabotaging the products? It's refreshing to follow a girl who is so self-assured: Sherry "rocks" at investigating, hosts "the makeup slumber party of the century," and is followed around by an agreeable and handsome boyfriend who supports her in her investigations. In fact, the only thing that produces strife is that her mother's afterlife has been complicated by a bureaucratic ghost organization called the Academy of Spirits. They hang out in a secret part of the local Dairy Queen and are not in favor of the mother-daughter pair working closely together. The teen tries to play by their rules because the Academy can occasionally grant what is called "Real Time"—a short moment when the living can interact with their departed loved ones; Sherry can talk to her mom but she can't see her. Sherry's supernatural relationships are central to the series but also hold the story back. (Her grandpa has come back as a cactus wren, the state bird of New Mexico.) Anyone who has ever been desperate for just five minutes more with a loved one might find Sherry's beyond-the-grave relationships frustrating.—Kathleen Meulen Ellison, Sakai Intermediate School, Bainbridge Island, WA

    7 out of 10 stars

I really didn't expect to like this book. Just by looking at the cover, you think that it's "just another chick-lit for preteenage wannabees" and then by reading the title, that thought is confirmed. The protagonist, Sherry, considers herself a sleuth (her name's short for Sherlock). In this book's case, she is playing detective to catch the horrible person who's been tainting the makeup at her favorite mall kiosk. I hadn't realized that this book was third in a series of Sherry's adventures. However, I read it fine without reading the first two books, so it makes a great stand-alone novel.

Most of the plot, as you can expect, was all happy-go-lucky. Sherry, who's thirteen, has a boyfriend, an extensive vocabulary, and an oddly quick thinking process. Yet, she's never worn makeup (before her incidental sleepover), loves glitter, and hates her stepmother. Is she mature, or immature for her age? I'm not quite sure. Also, there was some supernatural elements involved; her mom, who passed away, comes to visit her as a ghost, and Sherry always looks forward to meeting up with her.

The book was very fast-paced and fairly entertaining. I went through it in about three hours. Wasn't anything fancy to particularly stick in my mind (heck, I'm already forgetting some of it...but in my defense, it's been a few months since I've read it), and it definitely was sort of painful to read at times (everything in Sherry's life is so disgustingly perfect, which bothered me a bit). All the events were things that would never happen in real life because life never works that accurately. There were almost no surprises in the story, and when there was the teensiest trouble (the face mask caused rashes!), someone would always come to the rescue immediately (of course her stepmom is a health freak who just has soothing cream in her medicine cabinet. Really?). And obviously, the ghost mother thing. Note to author: if you're going to incorporate a ghost in the story, at least make it meaningful and realistic! Sherry's ghost mom only took away from the action!

All in all, it wasn't bad. But it's not something that'll haunt/affect me for the rest of my life either.

Rating: 7 hearts- A few flaws here and there, but wouldn't mind rereading.

    To the one below me!

You are totally right. I mean, a twelve year old with a perfect boyfriend...unrealistic. And was it necessary to add the romantic parts ( kissing, flirting, romance )? This was a great mystery but a little annoying. Thanks! ( this message is to the one below me.)

    E

This book is dumb. I think it would have been a better book if Sherry didnt have a perfect boyfriend at age twelve.

There was one little scene i thought was especially stupid: sherry and josh are trying to fool the guy from discount mart. Josh tells sherry he has acting experience just because he was an oompa loompa from charlie and the chocolate factory in a KINDERGARTEN play. Sherry gets all mushy because her boyfriend is a child star actor. Like seriously one tiny little play cant automatically make him a good actor!

There were also lots of cutesy girly abbreviations and words (like uber in front of everything) . I think the author was trying to sound like a teenager but it was annoying.
