In My Father's House is an interesting book which brings previous invisible relationships between father and son and forces the reader to rethink his/her conceptions about father and son relationships. Drawing upon his relationship with his dad and his relationship with his mentee; Bentley L. Dean III finds his place in the world and tries to make one for his mentee Jah.
After making the decision to come out and no longer live the life his father wanted for him; Bentley decides to call off his wedding to Kim Boston, start his modeling agency and drive off into the sunset with Warren Stubbs. Unfortunate for Bentley; Warren has other schemes hatching under his hat. Putting his love life on hold for a second Bentley's modeling agency is financially cripple. It would take something short of a miracle to make this week's payroll. Picture Perfect modeling agency meets Sterling Sneed, an angel in disguise or Bentley's miracle? Mr. Sneed's boss is looking for a particular type of man who knows how to act like an adult and keep his mouth shut. Specifically fifteen of Bentley's best looking models, gay, bi or very open-minded to attend a party hosted by Prosperity Gentlemen's Club. A club with a membership fee of one million dollars and its membership list consist of celebrities, athletes, and politicians.
Bentley's mentee Jah is a young college student and hungry for love. When one of the models can't make the gig with Prosperity Gentlemen's Club Bentley ask Jah to fill in even though he prefers to show Jah the life in small doses. Before Bentley can digest it all Jah is in love, ready to leave school and move out of the state. But what happens in the name of love to Jah is enough to make him run back to school.
I enjoyed reading In My Father's House and getting to know this new host of characters. It was a fun story about fathers, men and sons. This book shared the same lesson I interpret from John 14:2 that if you trust and believe; your father will prepare a place for you.

Farewell...

Being that this was to be the last novel written by E. Lynn Harris, I like I see many others were expecting way more than we possibly should have. I say this in meaning I don't think he was able to really and fully polish this to standards a majority of his work is accustomed to. For example, there are subtle and major parts of the story that seem to not really explain much and leave you wondering. Jah's escape from the clutches of Seth seemed to just happen without much "force" from Bentley. We are treated to the phone conversation between Bentley and Sterling and then Jah is released with a standard, "If you say anything..." warning. Overall I loved the book once it got going and like one of my fellow reviewers it became a real page turner when the tempo picked up. Personally for me I can relate to the theme of fathers and sons after losing my own at a young age. And so this story was a great read of acceptance and love. I truly wish we had not lost such a poignant voice from the community of humanity. But we are still left with a lifetime of works that has spoken, stirred and healed a great many of our own pains. Thank you again Mr. Harris.

A must read. You will struggle to put this book down. It's amazing! Another winner by the late E Lynn Harris.

One of my favorite authors!

Nice

Pretty good read

Loved It!!!

Was it just me or did this book seem to tell the story of Bishop Eddie Long? It has strong simularities I must admit. Jah's story is so close to all those young men who recently came forward. Scary...Just a thought.

The Best, So Good!

First of all RIP Mr. E Lynn Harris your writings will be greatly missed! This book was some edge of your seat good reading. It will keep you hanging until the end and of course wanting more...and it just leaves me saying; what and who will I now read?

missing e lynn harris

i havent read the book yet and dont think i will considering this was suppose to become a seris. which is probably why i see comments about it not seeming complete and that the ending was bad.

Must read

E Lynn Harris has always been one of my favorite authors(he is missed) In my fathers house was a very good book. Although it had a lot of different twist to it. It would been nice to see Bentley Dean III find true love in all the turmoil and confusion in his life. I think Jah was blessed and to think Warren he was just a down right low down brother. To have seen Seth Sinclair fall to pieces would of been great. It is always interesting to see one climb the ladder and belittle so many people only to face the same ones on the way back down. Over all I enjoyed the book to the fullest hopefully a follow up book knocking Seth off his thorn will follow.

OMG, jaw dropping action

I just bacame an e lynn harris reader about 2 years ago and i can honestly say im loving it... I only have read basketball jones and too good to be true before reading in my fathers house. i love the suspence that played out in each and every story. In My Father's House is definately a book that everyone should read.

Excellent Novel

I throughly enjoyed the book. However it seems as if it were missing something. I was looking for more at the end. Like what happened to those guys who did all of those bad things. What become of Bentley, Jah, and Warren?

Another Great Masterpiece

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it is extremely interesting how this story is being played out in the media in regards to Bishop Eddie Long, very eery indeed. I miss Mr. Harris sooo much :(

Missing E Lynn Harris

I was a huge fan of E Lynn Harris. I loved his "Basil Henderson" series and all the other series that branced off of them. He also wrote many stand alone novel.

"In My Father's House" seems to be the begining of a new series, that was not completed by Harris's untimely death in 2009.

The story was set up as many of Harris books. Afro American Yuppie who is in a powerful job, but still falls into the traps of love.

I am sorry that this series was not completed before his death. We will miss him.

okay! Not Great!

I am a fan of Harris' early novels. I was not overwhelmingly impressed by the final novel. The storyline had potential but it was not captivating. In this novel, the characters are not complex and the story line is not that interesting either. I think that I am over Harris being the go to gay author writing about gay issues and gay characters. Overall the novel is not that interesting and I have much higher expectations of the author in his story telling abilities.

Just O.K.

I am a fan of Harris and I was hoping for something more since this was his last book. The story line was good but I can't help but wonder did someone other than Harris finish the book. The characters and story line was well developed through out the book. The ending was somewhat of a let down. I felt that there were many unanswered questions. Unfortunately we don't know if the ending was the way it was because there was going to be a sequel....who knows. I have been a fan since Invisible Life and just feel like In My Father's House could have ended better if E. Lynn was still with us.....

Read At Your Own Risk....

Okay, so with great excitement I purchased this book the same week it was released because of the nostalgic feelings that began with Invisible Life and Abide With Me and on.....well I struggled with this novel moreso than Mama Dearest. The characters, though quite interesting, were not executed well and the story was boring, immature and painful to experience; however, somewhere around the Jah move with Seth, the book became somewhat of a page turner. I could not put the book down and then, the novel that took me weeks to complete the first 100 pages, was completed at midnight. As I attempted to go to bed, all I could think of were these characters and what would happen next if E. Lynn was still with us today. Read at your own risk. You will not miss anything if you don't but you will see my point if you do.
