Overview

The latest Arcane Society novel from New York Times- bestselling author of Running Hot and Fired Up-as she introduces her brand-new Looking Glass trilogy.

Jayne Ann Krentz follows up her highly successful Dreamlight Trilogy- written in collaboration with her two alter egos, Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle-with a brand-new story arc that begins in a secluded coastal town in northern California.

Scargill Cove is the perfect place for Fallon Jones, confirmed recluse and investigator of the paranormal. It's a hot spot, a convergence point for unusually strong currents of energy, which might explain why the town attracts misfits and drifters like moths to a flame. Now someone else has been drawn to the Cove-Isabella Valdez, on the run from some very dangerous men.

When she starts work as Fallon's assistant, Isabella impresses him by organizing his pathologically chaotic office-and doesn't bat an eye at the psychic aspect of his job. She's a kindred spirit, a sanctuary from a world that considers his talents a form of madness. But after a routine case unearths an antique clock infused with dark energy, Fallon and Isabella are dragged into the secret history of Scargill Cove and forced to fight for their lives, as they unravel a cutthroat conspiracy with roots in the Jones family business . . . and Isabella's family tree.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The cops just can't handle psychically powerful criminals who deal in weapons-grade paranormal artifacts. Enter the Jones & Jones detective agency. Known for his solitary habits, investigator Fallon Jones has taken on an assistant, Isabella Valdez, who displays some unusual talents of her own as she helps him dig through an ever-expanding mess of paranormal criminal activity. Krentz's latest Arcane Society novel is loaded with sexual tension between the tough-but-lovable Isabella and the normally dour Fallon, and the story hilariously alternates between inventive, deadly action and the amusingly gossipy smalltown characters in Scargill Cove, Calif., a supernatural nexus. Krentz (aka Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick) never rests on her laurels, carefully crafting a story that works on every level: as a detective novel, a paranormal thriller, and a romance. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Reclusive, brilliant Fallon Jones counts himself lucky that he has found an assistant like Isabella Valdez—organized, insightful, and totally accepting of his unnerving chaos-theory talent. But Isabella is not only a powerful talent in her own right, she is on the run from someone who wants her dead—and she has gone to ground in Scargill Cove, a tiny coastal town where no one asks questions. A macabre discovery in an old house gets things off to a chilling start as Isabella and Fallon are in a deadly web that stretches back to the malicious glass creations of Victorian inventor Millicent Bridewell, cleverly designed weapons that have lost none of their power over the years, as Fallon and Isabella quickly discover. VERDICT With vibrant wit and consummate flair, the creative, captivating Krentz has delivered another ingenious, suspenseful tale that unravels a mystery, pairs up another perfect couple, and successfully launches a new "Arcane Society" trilogy with well-placed hints of the delightful evils to come. Krentz (Fired Up) lives in Seattle.
Kirkus Reviews

Premiere of Krentz's new trilogy about a psychic detective agency.

In this latest addition to the Arcane Societyseries, para-detective Fallon Jones has finally met his match in Isabella Valdez, who has washed up in his home base, a remote, cliffside Northern California village called Scargill Cove. A few decades back, a commune of hippies lived here, under the sway of a guru who disappeared under mysterious circumstances but whose skeletal remains were later found in a bomb shelter hidden behind the Cove's no-tell motel. Scargill, a "nexus" of psychic energy, is a magnet for the preternaturally endowed. Strong, silent Fallon, whose psychic "talent" empowers him to see order in chaos, is instantly drawn to Isabella. Isabella invites herself to join Fallon's agency, Jones & Jones, as an investigator. Fallon is descended from those paranormal aristocrats the Joneses, Victorian-era pillars of the Arcane Society. For centuries, the Society, a shadowy league of talents working for good, has battled the minions of occult evil. The first case Isabella takes on, a routine ghost check of a mansion listed for sale, uncovers much more than she bargained for: a serial killer, a basement hiding human remains and, more importantly for Jones & Jones, a clock invented by Victorian genius, and Jones' nemesis, Mrs. Bridewell. That's just the beginning of this impossibly convoluted saga. Fallon and Isabella succumb all too soon to blistering passion, but probably not often enough for romance readers' expectations. The plot connecting the sex scenes, which involves internecine warfare among good psychics, bad psychics and clandestine government agencies, not to mention factions within the Society itself, soon becomes too "arcane" to sustain interest.

A chaotic welter of loose ends that Fallon himself couldn't unsnarl.

Meet the Author

Jayne Ann Krentz
Jayne Ann Krentz

Jayne Ann Krentz is the author of fifty New York Times bestsellers. She has written contemporary romantic suspense novels under that name, as well as futuristic and historical romance novels under the pseudonyms Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick, respectively. She lives in Seattle.

Biography

A successful corporate and academic librarian-turned-author, Jayne Ann Krentz wrote serial romances for several publishers (including industry powerhouse Harlequin) before breaking out in the '90s as a writer of romantic novels. To say that she has been successful is an understatement: A New York Times- bestselling author with more than 23 million copies of her books in print, she writes three sub-genres of romantic suspense under three different pen names: contemporary romances as Jayne Ann Krentz, historicals as Amanda Quick, and futuristic/paranormal romances as Jayne Castle. (In her early career, she employed at least three additional pseudonyms!) In 2006, the prolific Krentz launched The Arcane Society series -- crossover thrillers written under all three noms de plume that feature members of a secret organization devoted to the study of the paranormal.

It would be hard to find a more passionate advocate for romantic fiction than Krentz. In 1992, she edited and contributed to Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of the Romance, an award-winning nonfiction essay collection that serves an eloquent apologia for the genre. She has also received the Jane Austen Commemorative Medal from Romantic Times magazine for her work educating readers about Romance. "The Romance genre is the only genre where readers are guaranteed novels that place the heroine at the heart of the story," she says on her website. "These are books that celebrate women's heroic virtues and values: courage, honor, determination and a belief in the healing power of love." Clearly, her legions of loyal fans agree!

Good To Know

I have finally reached the point in my career where I have some say over cover art. Unfortunately, it turns out that I have absolutely no talent for cover art design. Thank heavens I'm with a publisher (Putnam/Berkley) that maintains a terrific art department.

I love green tea and red wine and was absolutely thrilled when it turned out that both are now considered health foods.

I love all animals except for squirrels which, I strongly suspect, are aliens from outer space who are here to take over the planet. You have been warned.

Once again, Jayne Ann Krentz delivers a fantastic romantic suspense

She worked for Lucas Protection Services under a false name; just one more false alias like she has had all of her life. She ran from her family and their nutty conspiracy theories as they worked hard to stay off the grid. She discovers there is an illegal arm's selling segment within the company she works for and they are going to pin the rap on her. She runs, but they catch her; she barely escapes being killed because the operation is illegal and Isabelle Valdez does not know who to trust in the firm; so she trusts no one.

Heeding her grandma's advice, she heads for Scargill Cove, California. Many of the residents are psychic like Isabelle who obtains a job with a powerful psycgic Fallon Jones who runs a detective agency. His clientele is usually from the Arcane Society devoted to Psy research and the police. Fallon and his new assistant find cache of psychic weapons hidden in a bomb shelter. They dismantle one that seems set to explode and have the arcane experts disable the rest. The pair follows clues that lead back to Lucas Protection dealing in psychic weapons that in the wrong hands could prove especially dangerous. They know they must break up the ring of sellers, buyers and suppliers; however the stakeholders in this lethal enterprise will kill any intruder without remorse. As Fallon and Isabelle fall in love, a new emotion for each, they do not lose sight of the mission.

Once again, Jayne Ann Krentz delivers a fantastic romantic suspense with a terrific angle involving psychic warfare. The fast-paced story line contains the trademark Ms. Krentz quirky characters, dry witty humor and loads of action. The lead characters are each powerful psychics who readers will believe used their Psy powers on us to finish the talein one exciting sitting.

    I truly enjoyed every word!

This is an exciting story where Fallon Jones, the main character, heads an Investigation business and is in need of an assistant. This is where the charming Isabella enters the story to give great balance in all things. There is the cute, playful dance leading to love and the lessons her goodness, paranormal talents and multiple other characteristics teach Jones as in acceptance that eases his ability to give. This is a wonderful story and I truly enjoyed every word!

Good but to expensive for what you got

Love the series and like most fans I have been dying for the Fallon jones story. I reserved my copy in November and went ahead and paid the high price for the book. It was good but not as great as I expected. I guess my expectations were just to high for the long anticipated Fallon story.

Finally learned more about Fallon. Though, he wasn't exactly how I pictured him. He seemed to lose his caustic edge. Still enjoyed the story.

    Incredibly repetitious

Pete and Repeat are telling this story. SO MUCH repetition and redundant wording! Where are the editors who are supposed to catch phrases like, "He was glad to have the opportunity to get the chance to..."?

Another Winner for Jayne Ann Krentz!

I just finished reading IN TOO DEEP by Jayne Ann Krentz, Book One of the Looking Glass Trilogy. If you follow the Arcane Society romantic suspense/mystery series as I do, you know that the novels have been set in the past, present and future. They all have one thing in common: each book is a great reading experience. IN TOO DEEP is no exception. Fallon Jones is a gumshoe with heightened paranormal abilities. Jones & Jones Investigations is located in Scargill Cove, a small Northern California town with unique currents of psi or paranormal energy. Isabella Valdez flees to Scargill Cove where she fits in with the other eccentric and/or unusually talented people. This is an exciting book with interesting, well-developed characters. Add to this a mix of mystery, thriller and hot romance and you have a winner of a novel.

    more from this reviewer

In Too Deep is the first of The Looking Glass Trilogy. Fans of the modern day Arcane Society who thought Fallon Jones would never get his mate, stand to be corrected.

Fallon Jones, head of the family business of J&J Investigations long ago moved to the quirky, quaint town of Scargill Cove CA. It's close to the sea and shrouded in more than the fog rolling off the Pacific, why did he move, well it's location, location, location. Fallon is a strong probably off the charts chaos theory talent, which helps immensely in his investigations, but not so much his social life which is why he prefers this little town where he can hide in plain sight to aid his reclusiveness.
Isabella Valdez is fleeing for her life from the very people who she once worked for, now she fears they've done away with her Grandmother and the only place she has left to run to is Fallon Jones. Fallon knows she's hiding something, he is after all a strong talent, he just has to keep her safe until she fesses up. In the mean time they have this other small problem, they can't keep their hands off each other. Chaos, Kismet or disaster, start turning pages to find out.
Ms. Krentz continues her beloved Arcane novels with the irrepressible Fallon Jones, that unlovable character you've met in many previous reads and matches him with this spunky, sparkly direct opposite of him, which works like a charm. The plot is of course out of this world, dealing with Victorian paranormal weapons and villains who are just as odd as the heros. Her dialogue is in the ever present Arcane-speak that her fans are used to and love, but if you're a new reader to this series it may take you a few pages to get it down, once you do you'll Arcane-speak with the best of them. Her characters are over the top, unforgettable but at the same time very personable. The romance is wonderfully sweet in part because of the hero's proclivity to chivalry and the heroine's allowance of it and in part because these two lovers make you smile at every turn. The love scenes are as hot as the romance is sweet, but not too hot to embarrass the reader.
Get ready for another trip in the funhouse that is the Arcane Society with all the quirky members, bad and good and in between, for a bumpy ride to romance, for tense moments with villains to remember and crimes you won't forget mixed with a cornucopia of odd characters and even odder places. All in all a great read. The only detriment to getting hooked on the Arcane books, is waiting for the next one.

    Another amazing Arcane novel

She's done it again. Fast pace, riveting and made of win. We reconnect with Fallon, who's having some very big problems both professionally and physically as a result of his talent. It's taking it's toll. Then we meet the mysterious and very interesting Isabella. She's in her own brand of hot water and has something in common with our Jones. Espionage, revenge plots, murder, hired thugs, new psi weapons, new foes, romance, twists a mile a minute, friendship, humor, family, I could go on. It's all here. Wonderful and fun new characters (like a town full of Fallon's), to the old ones we love like Arizona (who it appears knows all the retired agents, haha). We see new layers to Fallon and find he's not this brooding closed off superman, but human as the rest of us. Isabella taps into this not often used side of him and opens up a new world for them both. And J&J. Because only partners on all levels can work a case like this and come out on top. Couldn't put it down and so jazzed for the next one. I can see where this is going and I just love it.

    Finally! Fallon's Story

Fallon Jones, mysterious head of the J& J agency, hires Isabella Valdez to be his assistant. She is on the run from agents from her previous job after being set up to appear to be an arms trader. She quickly proves herself to be invaluable to the cantankerous Fallon, organizing his office and life. Romance blooms amid an interesting case involving antique mechanical items imbued with paranormal power to kill people, proving Isabel's innocence, and finding a missing relative.

I especially enjoyed seeing old friends Luther & Grace and Jack & Raine from previous Arcane books and even a brief appearance from Arizona Snow, uber conspiracy therorist, from the Eclipse Bay series. Can't wait for the next book in the Looking Glass Trilogy due in April.

    Highly Recommend

Have read all the previous books in this series and was looking forward to reading this one. Krentz doesn't disappoint. If you like her other books you'll like this one.
