    Trashy Psycho-Thriller

    This book is truly a work of fiction rather than a credible psychological portrait by a professional in the field as it is billed. Casey Anthony is a text book case of an "off the map" sociopath (formally Antisocial Personality Disorder).

    Google the criteria and you'll see that it is a matter of public record that Casey meets at least 6 of the 7 criteria and arguably all 7 of them when only 3 are required for a diagnosis. But this was evidently so boringly obvious that Ablow found the need to engage in wild speculation and salacious, sexual innuendo, and the ever reliable blaming the parents. Despite the fact that there is a profound lack of evidence that parenting can cause this very severe mental disorder. There is robust evidence based upon twin studies that it is significantly heritable (about 50%).

    The fundamental essence of a sociopath is that they lack a conscience and are therefore capable of anything including murder if it suits them in some way. However, despite the fact that this is immediately obvious to even a layperson Ablow engages in wild, wild speculation to come up with some non-existent diagnosis and blames the parents for it all.

    For example, there is not one shred of evidence that Casey was sexually abused by George. Yet, Ablow ties together several inconsequential pieces of information such as the fact that George was overjoyed to learn that he was having a granddaughter, was present at Caylee's birth, and that he loves to entertain children as evidence that he is a child molester. I love to entertain children and I have a special fondness for girls. That does not make me a pervert or a sexual abuser. Shameful and unethical speculation on Ablow's part.

    Similarly, Ablow speculates that Casey might like to be tied up and/or slapped during sex as a way of reliving her also speculated abuse by George. This has never even been suggested by ANYONE, and clearly Ablow has little understanding of the affects of sexual abuse. What purpose could these WILD speculations serve other than as salacious, sexual innuendo for selling the book? This likely reveals more of what's inside the mind of Mr. Ablow than Casey.

    He recounts much of what is already known about Casey (no value add), interlaced with wild speculation, and salacious, sexual innuendo. If you want a trashy psycho-thriller then buy this book. If you want true understanding of the mind of someone like Casey, and the degree to which her parents could (or could not) have contributed to her pathology I would recommend the following books:

    The Sociopath Next Door,
    Without Conscience,
    Personality Disorders in Modern Life,
    The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature.

    I can't understand why Ablow felt he needed to engage in such wild speculation when it is a matter of public record that Casey's behavior meets the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder (aka sociopath or psychopath). He missed a great opportunity to help educate the world about sociopaths and help everyone remain vigilant against their potentially disastrous impact on society. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

    Mr. Ablow would do himself and everyone a favor if he would stick to fiction as he clearly has a very active imagination which is applied to great detriment in this book. This book is a disgrace to his profession and a disservice to the public.

    A Must Read

    I have to give this book a five star rating.
    If you want a book about this case that is written with unbiased motives, and with details others aren't talking about, then this is the book for you to read.
    The insights Dr. Ablow gives, is genius, in the way he takes the reader through Casey's life, and shows how she became
    the way she is, and how, a precious baby came to die.
    Before reading any other book on this case, this should be first, as it's the foundation on which to rely for the truth.

    What a waste

    I can't believe the author does not loose his license to practice medicine as a consequence of this book. He has never interviewed Casey. None of the interviews he did of others added anything of value beyond what is already known of Casey. Therefore he just makes crap up!

    Can't believe he can get away with something like this.

    Do not waste your money on this book.

    highly recommend

    I must say, in spite of all these boycotters who don't think, that this book shows exactly the why and how this murder could have happen. Ablow said hr interviewed ex lovers, friends and neighbors, he studied days and nights all documents and finally put his experience to dig into casey's mind. As a neglected daughter I can say all he writes touched my heart and though I think personally casey should pay for her crime, I understand how deep the pain can cut a soul.

    Interesting

    Although it was a little tedious and repititious at times, it confirmed what I had suspected all along - Cindy was the driving force for the death of Caylee. It does give insight on Casey's state of mind and does not condone her actions. Dr. Ablow gives a different view of the story of Casey Anthony. Worth reading.

    What about a sociopathic Casey?

    How about this...hypothetical Theory #6?
    Sociopathic Casey Anthony, born and raised by a controlling mother and a weak father, has led a sheltered life. She gets anything and everything she wants. She has fun creating a fantasy life which allows her to lie and control those around her, including the love-hate relationship she has with her mother. She gets attention from how cute her little girl is and she laughs at how stupid people are to believe everything she tells them. Casey also sees the love and attention that Caylee gets from her parents...why not her? Extreme rage builds as this threatens her extreme narcissistic inner self.

    One night, her mom confronts her fantasy world. There is a fight. Casey will show them! She takes away the only thing her parents love most...their beloved Caylee. In her mind, with Caylee gone, she can live the fun and carefree life she deserves.

    Enjoyed the writing style, but I am not convinced about your psychological portrait as sociopathy is ignored and Casey is painted as a victim.

    highly recommended

    this book explains why someone can do horrible things. The author is not absolving a murder or condemning parental behavior, but, as a psychiatrist, he shows us how mistakes should be acknowledged to be avoided. He studied casey's environment and paints a portrait; his insights can help us to understand our own fears, our own traps and overcome them.

    Seriously?!

    This book made me angry. I understand the author is a psychologist and trying to present a reason for psychologically why Casey may have killed her daughter but throughout the entire book he blames Cindy and George for it and all of Casey's problems. While, I see that it's very obvious that the members of her immediate family are quite frankly dysfunctional and while I believe they could all have used some serious family therapy, I think it's outrageous to blame the death of Caylee on everyone but Casey and make Casey herself out to be a victim of a "psychological death". Give me a break!!! I know psychiatry/psychology is a legitimate science to a point but a lot of the points Ablow makes in this case are ridiculous and read like a psychological thriller. He presents Casey's words as if they're fact when she is a known and reported liar (and by scores of people, not just her parents). Regardless, of what may or may not have happened in her life she killed her child and there is no reason or excuse for that. Plenty of people have terrible things happen to them and have abuse perpetrated on them and do not kill their child. This is the only Nook book so far that I wish I hadn't bought.

    Dr. Keith Ablo is nuts

    I made it to page 97. and Im throwing it in the trash literally. Dr. Keith Ablo is completely nuts. Im not talking about his theories. Ok he has some theories. Some that are shared by many. We all have to speculate a little. I mean we all want to know the truth... His made up detailed imaginary scenarios are kind of frightening. I mean frightening because a liscensed medical professional would make up this movie plot and sell it to non medical professionals who are interested trying to understand why a woman would do something like this and continue to behave this way that is so uncomprehensible. Im frightened for his patients! Maybe he doesnt treat people anymore since he's more interesting in being famous and selling books (I hope he doesnt treat people). Out of control that guy!
