    Not okay

To sell half a book, and then offer it for $10 is not okay. I am extremely disappointed with my Nook.

    Didn't like it

Some of this author's other work is quite good, but this one is not worth reading.

INSPECTOR ZHANG GETS HIS WISH (an aptly named short story) by Stephen Leather runs about 18 pages...and the rest of the pages are taken up with front-matter and a preview of another work by the author. In reading this free short, my first exposure to Stephen Leather's work, I was reminded of Sherlock Holmes. It had the same feel...with lots of discussion, the Inspector teaching his underlings (a little annoying), and a bit too shallow in the point of view department. By the end, it's all wrapped up in a tidy package with a bow-ribbon, where like Matlock, the case was solved.

    Short but good

Inspector Zhang is a very different type of detective. Not bad at all for a short story. In fact looking forward to reading more about his adventures.

    Entertaining Short Story

Short story with a surprise ending. Inspector Zhang has a Hercule Poirot-like personality. Interesting cast of characters. Would like to read more Inspector Zhang mysteries.

    OK book

The Inspector was pretty irritating but clever at the same time. I didn't figure it out.

    Mildly entertaining.

This is a mediocre locked room mystery that could have been set in any location in any century. The fact that it is set in Singapore is incidental and I look forward to other Inspector Zhang mysteries in Singapore if the unique cultural features or Singapore (such as the many traditions of Chinese opera and puppetry and multiculturalism) are part of the story.

Never was a fan of mysteries, especially short story mysteries, but this one has made me a convert. Its superb construction with that unique brand of Stephen Leather sense of humor peeking through is, once again, all too captivating. I look forward to more Inspector Zhang stories.
