The Goncourt jury was locked five to five until its president used his double vote to give the prize to the older candidate. Ten minutes later the Renaudot jury elected the candidate they thought they might lose to the other prize. Most of the literary sections ran their prize news putting the Renaudot first, in order to feature the twenty-three-year-old discovery that was rocking Paris literary circles.

What is The Interrogation? Most likely a myth without distinct delineations. A very solitary young man, Adam Pollo, perhaps the first man, perhaps the last, has a very remarkable interior adventure. Meet the Author

J.M.G. Le Clézio, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in Nice in 1940 and is one of France’s best-known contemporary writers. He has written more than 40 fiction and nonfiction books, including works for children. His works are translated into 36 languages around the world. He currently divides his time between Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mauritius, and his house on the sea in Brittany, France.

Aphasia, Nihilism, or Just Plain Old Dissociative Disorder

Our main character walks through a mildly dissociated series of intentionally homeless vignettes that feature his deteriorating relationship with another woman, his observation of a drowning, his occupation of a vacant house on a hill, his killing of a rat by the effective, if novel, method of thrown pool balls, and his eventual institutionalization for a diagnosis of aphasia. He epitomizes a life that has effectively lost its appetite; nothing signifies for him personally, and he expresses intense detachment, depression, and dissociation not only from the women in his life, not only from his family, but also even from himself. I gave this book five stars because it seems to me to describe the condition of the modern person in "Post-Christian" culture and, to a large extent, the aimlessness of modern culture itself. LeClezio gives it a long, hard, unapologetic look. I'm glad he does, but the book is a damned tough read. I came away from my reading of it with a renewed sense of optimism and the desire to encourage those who are enduring hard circumstances. I find that worthwhile and meaningful in itself. On, now, to the work of Lessing!

Not what I was expecting

The plot did not quite live up to the synopsis on the cover. I was disappointed in the lack of plot and character development. Would probably not recommend it to many.
