Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Jack is a typical teenager of the 1980s, or so he thinks. He is the youngest of three children. He is pestered by his older sister and his parents and tormented by his brother. Jack's normal existence is threatened, however, when his friends Weezy and Eddie stumble upon a mysterious object and a dead body with a gruesome secret. He and Weezy must decide quickly whom to trust, because many of the adults in their lives suddenly develop unspeakable secrets. As they work to solve the mystery of the hieroglyphics on the pyramid, people in their small town begin to drop dead. They discover that this is the work of a mythical creature and a secret organization. Jack, Eddie, and Weezy must act quickly to determine the reasons for the deaths before they become the next victims. Jack must use all his intelligence and new found lock picking skills in order to stay one step ahead of the murderer. This is a fun and exciting read that will appeal to all audiences. It is a must have for any library. It is a great book for general entertainment, and it will take many adults on a nostalgic journey to their teen years. Reviewer: Jennifer Mitchell
Kirkus Reviews
The bestselling author of the Repairman Jack thriller series moves into the young-adult market with a prequel about the teenage Jack, who is just discovering his talents. At age 14, Jack's interests focus on his friends, especially his friend Eddie's sister, black-clad Weezy. The trio find a body and a mysterious black cube in the forest, both connected to a secret society of possibly ancient origin. Although Wilson drops a tinge of the supernatural into the book, he hews to a basic detective-story plot, with plenty of suspense to keep readers charging ahead. Despite the unrealistic premise, the text makes it easy for readers to suspend disbelief as Jack learns that he has a talent for figuring his way out of difficult situations. Wilson deftly keeps interest high with well-drawn characterizations, modulating the thrills with details of day-to-day life in the early 1980s. Cracking good fun for teens. (Fiction. YA)

From Jack: Secret Histories

Weezy laid the object on the ground between them and began to examine it.

Jack knelt opposite her. “What do you think it is?”

She shook her head, looking as baffled as he felt. “I don’t know. Some kind of stone—onyx, maybe? It’s got no writing on it, but I get this feeling it’s . . . old.” She looked up at him. “Know what I mean?”

Jack couldn’t say why, but he knew exactly what she meant.

“Yeah. Very old.”

“And where there’s one there’s probably others.” Her eyes were wide with wonder and excitement. “Help me, Jack?”

“Try and stop me.”

He wanted one of those cubes for himself.

So they started digging—not easy in the wet sand. But they kept coming up empty. Frustration was beginning to nibble at Jack when his fingertips scraped against a hard surface.

“Got something!”

He dug his fingers down on each side of whatever it was and pulled it up.

And found himself looking into the empty eye sockets of a rotting human head.

He stared in mute, open-mouthed, grossed-out shock. Beside him, Weezy screamed.

    So Jack

The entire three book series of "young" Jack books is well worth the read for fans of "adult" Jack's adventures. My only complaint about this book in particular is that its the last of the young adventures. Wilson captures the era of Jack's youth well by using music and tech references that gave me a chuckle. He somehow switches seamlessly to an adolescent mind-set from the adult books while keeping the integrity of the characters. Best of all, we unexpectedly meet a few characters from the adult books and get a glimpse of their beginnings. Wish there were more.

    An Adrenalin Rush!

This is a remarkable tale of a young man capable of thinking for himself. He is loyal to his friends and takes actions to defend them if they have been wronged.
I think there is 'a little bit of Jack' in all of us.

good read, but not up to Wilson's norm

It was a good book. I've been looking forward to the next installment of the Repairman Jack series. I was disappointed to find this was an adventure of young Jack, when he was only about 13 y/o.

If you're looking for a typical Wilson book, go elsewhere. If you're looking for a decent read, along the lines of a teen adventure then this is for you

    Repairman Jack: teenage sleuth

In 1983 New Jersey, teenager Jack enjoys playing Atari games with his friends, siblings Eddie and Weezy his other pastime is riding his bike. Jack prefers to stay away from his home as his parents are pests, his older sister demanding and his older brother an abusive jerk.------------- Jack and his two buddies are biking in the Pine Barrens when they find an ancient burial site. Unable to resist they search for hidden treasure only to find a more modern but rotted corpse and an odd looking black box with arcane symbols etched on it. Neither Weezy nor Eddie can open it only Jack can. They soon learn the victim was a member of the elite Ancient Septimus Fraternal Order. Not long afterward other members are murdered. Jack investigates the enigmatic box and the serial killings of the Order.------------- Repairman Jack teenage sleuth is an enjoyable whodunit as fans obtain a look at the strange hero¿s early life in suburbia. The story line starts a bit slow especially for those who know Jack as F. Paul Wilson methodically sets time and place more so for older followers of the series. Once we know Jack, the plot takes off as he makes inquiries that places him in jeopardy, but sets him on his future life¿s path. JACK: SECRET HISTORIES is a wonderful refreshingly different entry that targets young adults, but series readers will relish young Jack in action.------------ Harriet Klausner
