Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Stephen King is included among the ranks of this 1985 thriller's fans (and Uncle Stevie knows a few things). Carol and Lee murder a friend's abusive husband. But someone saw them and enjoyed it so much that he wants them to murder someone else so he can participate. Ketchum, who also writes horror under the nom de plume Dallas Mayr, provides a new afterword.

—Michael Rogers

    solid psychological thriller

Wayne and Susan are hiking together when he suddenly starts choking her. He stops just before he kills her. Stunned Susan catches her breath and runs from him. Wayne feels like a failure for stopping his death hold on a human he has killed animals before, but still has not tasted his first human. --- Soon after that Wayne witnesses a man and a woman kill another man. He realizes the female is Carole, who is a regular at the Black Locust Tavern where he works as a bartender. She was using a Louisville Slugger on her former still abusive spouse Howard while her lover Lee watched until she used a rock to complete the kill. Ten minutes and Wayne thought he had the best hard on of his life as a voyeur who wants to play and will with his two new associates. So begins Wayne¿s murder fling with his two new shocked buddies. --- This is a reprint of a solid psychological thriller that hooks the audience from the moment a euphoric Wayne begins to plot his murderer¿s row with his stunned partners. The story line is fast-paced, but the readers never fully learn what motivates Wayne into being a serial killer whereas Carole¿s reasoning for killing Howard is implied that he is a nasty SOB who will never leave her alone until one of them are dead. Ironically the police investigator is understood more than Wayne is. Still fans of Jack Ketchum¿s dark look at human nature will appreciate this murderous JOYRIDE. --- Harriet Klausner

    Another Shocker from Ketchum

Ketchum knows how to shock his readers. This book, is no different. After Carole and Lee murder Caroles's abusive ex husband, they are basically torured, and held captive to another murderer who saw them commit their crime. One after another brutal muder takes place by the deranged man who witnesses Carole and Lee's murder. The scenes are gory, shocking, and disgusting. But thats what makes Jack Ketchum who he is. The book was good, but not the best from him. However, if you like horror, or Ketchums other novels, then you should read this one as well.

    He's had better work.

This book wasn't that great. Ok, it was a good topic, sounded interesting...was interesting but then it just started going down hill. The idea of some weird guy witnessing a murder and being excited about it-is weird enough. Then to have this guy go after the murderers because he was so excited about the murder they committed is crazy. That idea of this sounded like an edge of your seat book. It seemed somewhere in the middle this things changed. It started by diving into the cops mind about his problems when the story was about the murderers and the psycho that kidnaps them. I kept wondering why I was getting so much information about this cop...what role did he play in this? When the ending finally came around I didn't even know it. I turned the page to go on to the next chapter and there were no other chapters. It was over. I did one of those things were you read the last few paragraphs wondering, 'did I miss something?' So, the plot was good enough but I can't say this was worth too much of your time.
