Overview

"Seven-year-old Autumn Backman needed a hero. When she saw Special Agent Dillon Savich on TV after he'd brought down bank robbers in a Georgetown bank, she knew she'd found him. She called Savich, but she didn't use the phone." "They were burying dead people in my daddy's grave ... they're coming after us. Please help me." "Who's they?" "Blessed, he's coming." "Ethan Merriweather, sheriff of Titusville, Virginia, a small mountain town near the Titus Hitch Wilderness, goes looking for a missing little girl. Soon after he finds her, Ethan realizes that Autumn has brought him a huge problem - a relentless madman who has the ability to control others simply by looking at them. And the madman is after her and her mom." "It's Uncle Blessed, and he wants Autumn." "When Savich answers Autumn's call, she tells him Blessed is from Bricker's Bowl, Georgia. Savich and Sherlock go to Blessed's home, learn about his brother, Grace, and meet their mother, Shepherd. Savich soon realizes the only way to stop Blessed is to "cut off the snake's head." Back in Titusville, Ethan, Autumn, and her mother, Joanna, are forced to hide from Blessed and Grace in the wilderness. Ethan knows the brothers will never give up their insane pursuit for Autumn. It's a race to stop the madness, or the madness will destroy them all.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Coulter's riveting 13th FBI thriller (after TailSpin) opens with a bang as psychic FBI agent Dillon Savich thwarts a gang of gun-totting robbers attempting to hold up the First Union Bank of Washington, D.C. Three days later, seven-year-old Autumn Backman, who sees Dillon on TV, sends him a telepathic message that she's in danger. Though eager to help Autumn, Dillon is busy tracking a bank robber who escaped, a teenage girl now leaving a trail of bodies in her wake. Meanwhile, in Titusville, Va., Autumn's mother reports her daughter missing to sheriff Ethan Merriweather. After finding Autumn, Ethan discovers her sinister uncle, Blessed, has evil designs on his psychic niece. Before Dillon and his fellow FBI agent and wife, Lacey Sherlock, can get to Titusville, Autumn and her mother flee. Well-developed characters and an expertly paced plot that builds to a breathtaking conclusion make this one of the best in this paranormal suspense series. (June)

Meet the Author

Catherine Coulter
Catherine Coulter

Catherine Coulter is the author of the New York Times-bestselling FBI thrillers The Cove, The Maze, The Target, The Edge, Riptide, Hemlock Bay, Eleventh House, Blindside, Blowout, Point Blank, Double Take, and TailSpin.

Biography

The author of dozens of bestsellers, Catherine Coulter made her Romance debut with 1978's The Autumn Countess, a fast-moving story she describes as "a Gothic masquerading as a Regency." Six more Regency romances followed in quick succession; then, in 1982, she penned her first full-length historical novel, Devil's Embrace. She counts several trilogies among her most popular historicals, notably the Bride Trilogy -- which, in turn, spawned an ongoing story sequence featuring the beloved Sherbrooke family of Regency-era England.

In 1988, Coulter tried her hand at contemporary romance with a twisty little page-turner called False Pretenses. Her fans ate it up and begged for more. Since then, she has interspersed historicals with contemporary romantic thrillers (like the novels in her bestselling FBI series) in one of the most successful change-ups in the history of romance publishing.

Nook (or any e-book problems)----I love Catherine Coulters's FBI series, but I have a problem waiting on the new books to come out on e-book at a reasonable price.

We bought 2 Nooks from Barnes and Nobles and they knew I was waiting on the new one to come out this month. Little did I know, alot of my favorite authors don't allow the e-book for sale for over a year and then it is still more than the hardback and MUCH more than the paperbacks. We got these nooks so we could read anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, you just can't get all of the books you want to read on e-books for a long time with some authors or publishers.

    more from this reviewer

    Same old story

Well, after reading 4 chapters I already knew who was ending up with whom. The characters seem to never change and the plot is soooo predictable. This book is good for falling asleep at night, especially if you read more than one of her books since they are basically all the same and after reading the first 3 you know what will happen in all of them.
So if you need a book were you do not have to think a lot definitely get this one, very light reading.

    Much of the same

The author has a very readable writing style, and when the FBI series first came out that style made her stories different and exciting. Time has made many of her books formulaic. They are still very interesting, but those who have read most of her FBI series can predict the next page and then the next and so forth. Worth reading, but not the fresh writer of some years ago.

    Extremely disappointed

I love the FBI series and the characters but this book is horrible. There is very little of Savage and Dillion until quite a way into the book and the "pscho" factor gives is a totally unrealistically premise. Nuts.

    Another e book ripoff

Again, another author and publisher that apparently are not supportive of the e-book market. This book is available for $8.99 in paperback on-line but is $18.99 for an e-book. There are so many good authors and books out there I don't feel it's necessary to purchase from these authors any longer in any format.
