Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is David Kahn¿s, 'Krav Maga.' After a brief introduction, David gives you a good basic overview of Krav Maga including some of its history. From here he goes right into a section on philosophy, which is very good, and one in which I would have to agree with about 90% of what he has to say. The next section in the book gives a good overview on the proper mindset needed in order for you to prepare yourself for combat. Something a lot of books fail to do, but not this one. David also gives you a basic understanding of the vital/vulnerable points on the human body. David¿s next section is rather brief to my liking, but still a good overview on the basic principles involved in striking correctly for maximum effect. This section covers such strikes as punches, palm heel strikes, elbow strikes, and eye gouges. There is also a small section on blocks and parrying as it is called in boxing. The following section covers various lower body strikes and kicks along with kick defenses, which include deflections, blocks and grabs. This next section was particularly interesting in that it discussed close combat fighting and techniques essential to this section. Such as falling, crawling, clinching, takedowns, defenses against tackles, etc. The escape section was very enlightening as David covered the basic principles of escape from basic grabs, chokes while standing, chokes while lying down, head locks, hair grabs, and bear hugs. Like most books that try to cover too much in one volume, I feel that the sections themselves although very well done, tend to be too brief on the proper execution of each individual technique. However, having said that, this is to be expected as the scope of this book is intended as a basic overview of the complete system, not a single volume devoted to one particular technique. The only fault that I have with this book is the fact that I would have preferred actual photographs for demonstrating the techniques, rather than illustrations. I felt that a lot of what David was trying to explain got lost with the use of illustrations compared to if he would have used actual photographs. The book continues with a brief section on basic strategies, which I found to be very solid. It then finishes with a basic training section which covers stretching, training programs, a 12 week training routine, and sparring. Overall, this is a very good basic overview on the art of Krav Maga, and one you definitely want to acquire, especially if you decide to join a Krav Maga class. And that is not a bad idea at all.

I have been studying Krav Maga for several years and find the book to be outstanding in teaching the basics of Krav Maga. Personally I have been using his book as a guideline for rehabbing my conditioning after I had some serious surgery. I use his week by week guide to get myself back into 'fighting' shape in an organized and orderly fashion. I highly recommend this book for the beginner or for the advanced student that needs to 'go back to the basics'. I look forward to David's next book.

I've been a Kravist for 20 plus years. When David Kahn's book was published I eagerly devoured it. This is an easy-to-read guide to the Israeli art of Krav Maga. The book contains dynamic illustrations and instructions.

Simply put, this is a great text. Finally a book that makes techniques understandable without missing nuances that make Krav Maga unique. The instruction is clear, diagrams are great, and the background/history help solidify my understanding of the system. My technique is DEFINITELY improved thanks to this book.

Having some background in Krav Maga and martial arts, I found this book very helpful for both beginners and intermediate readers who want to learn and practice a real self-defense system. With numerous illustrations and clear text this book is a must have.

I¿ve only taken a few classes in Krav Maga, but I feel really great about it. My classes are fun, and I feel safer now going home. I¿m a nurse so since I¿m always working, this book is great to keep me going!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I also teach Krav Maga and found the diagrams and lessons to be very accurate and easy to understand. The author also included much of the theory/philosophy behind Krav Maga which is nearly as important as the techniques themselves. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of this Israeli Martial Art

I have done krav maga to the green belt level, and found this to be a great addition. It details the basics of krav maga (as well as some intermediate stuff). This book will be a great introduction to new students of krav maga, and also a good reference for more intermediate and advanced students. The best thing would still be to enroll in a krav class, because krav instruction is like nothing else: the adrenaline stress drills, multiple attackers, the confusion, darkness and noise of real self defense situations. You of course cannot get that in a book. But this book is excellent as a source book for krav maga. This book is also an excellent adjunct to the book 'Krav Maga - How to Defend Yourself Against Armed Assault', which is also available on this website. The 'Armed Assault' covers more advanced techniques such as how to defend yourself against people armed with knives and guns, and even grenades. Multiple attackers. If you buy both books, you have in essence the entire krav maga curriculum !

I have always struggled with weight problems and felt very uneasy in the gym's social scene. A friend bought this book for me and I am forever grateful to her and to David Kahn. I already lost 6 pounds, feel stronger, and I'm only in the third week! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to shed pounds and gain both inner and outer strength. A fun read too!

This is a good book for intro into a simple yet effective self defense system. It also states the basic martial philosophy of fight only when necessary and to be careful to use only as much force as necessary to defend yourself.
