I looked at our young son asleep in the back seat, then turned to my wife next to me and I whispered "What The Hell Did We Do".After moving on to Alcatraz our thought on Island life quickly changed and we decided not to apply for a transfer out, which consequently left us there until the Island closed in March of 1963.Because of our newly born daughters foot problem they left us there until June of 1963 making me The Last Guard Out.

    Just finished reading

Not the most polished writing-so if you are picky about the mechanics of writing, you will find this author just tells it like it was-like an uncle telling you about the good old days or an old war story over a cup of coffee. I rather enjoyed the simple storytelling minus the high gloss editing. I felt like I was on a private tour of the island with each page. Wish author had included more anecdotal stories about some of the more notorious prisoners.

    Great Personal Account

I read this book after it first came out and our library had a copy. I thought that it was well written and the descriptions made it seem as if I could visualize the place myself. I really liked that it had so much information about the island, the prison and the personal lives of everyday people who just happened to be in an usual time and place.

Quick read, great description of the island and the way things were.

After going on the Alcatraz tour in San Francisco this summer, I ordered this book. I found it to be a great addition to the information we obtained on the tour. I lent it to my son as we both were very interested in the history of the island. Although it may not be as well written as a best seller..I truely enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone interested in Alcatraz history!
