Overview

A ruthless killer hides in plain sight, someone no one believes is capable of murder. Within a week, six women will be murdered, all punished for their dark pasts. Detective Dani Cole is determined to track down this serial killer whose victims include a young woman she pulled out of a life of crime. Her investigation leads her to a photography foundation and the renowned photographer Mitch Sheridan, a man she she fell in love with years ago but has tried to forget. Dani and Mitch are instantly attracted to each other again, though their troubled pasts keep them from getting too close. Together, through the course of the investigation, they unearth a dark chain of deception that leads to a killer who is closer than they think.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Brady's second romantic thriller (One Scream Away) sports a winning combination of complex characters and intricately woven plot. Mourning the recent death of her father, Maryland police detective Dani Cole is called back to work to investigate a murder because she knows the victim, a former prostitute named Rosie whom Dani helped to start a new life. An unlikely link between Rosie and arts foundation director Russell Sanders dissolves when Sanders is also found murdered, but by then Dani has reconnected with an old flame: Mitch Sheridan, the foundation's owner. The independent, solitary cop stubbornly resists Mitch's charms, but as bodies begin to pile up, Mitch and Dani find themselves at equal risk of falling in love and being killed. There's nothing exactly new here, but Brady's deft style will keep readers turning pages. (Sept.)

    AN AMAZING PYSCHOLOGICAL THRILLER/ROMANTIC SUSPENSE!

LAST TO DIE by Kate Brady is an amazing romantic suspense set in modern day Lancaster, Maryland. It is well written with a very detailed plot. The characters are unforgettable. It has drama, suspense, betrayal, murder, mayhem, romance, sweet sensuality, twists, turns, great police work details, FBI, a serial killer, adoption, sins from the past comes to the front, and black market baby selling. The hero, Mitch, is a photojournalist, intelligent, handsome, and has a painful past with the smart police detective Dani. The heroine, Dani, is a smart police detective, been hurt by her father's betrayal(he was a crooked cop), and is still attracted to Mitch, after all these years since she pushed him away. When they meet again sparks fly between them. Mitch determined to not let Dani push him away this time. His mentor and partner in JM Sherdian Foundation has been killed along with several young pregnant prostitutes, who have been disfigured and streaks of their hair missing. Together Mitch and Dani finds leads bringing them closer to the killer and the reasons. This is a high octane psychological thriller with plenty of seat on the edge of your seat drama and a race against time to save Dani before the killer can do her harm also. I would recommend this book especially crooked cops, a team of FBI, and a psycho killer this is definitely a book for you. This book was received for review and details can be found at Forever an imprint of Grand Central Publishing and My Book Addiction and More.

    taut police procedural

In Maryland, after burying her bad cop father, Detective Dani Cole remains the loner she has been all her life as she has relied on one person: herself. Ironically in spite of depending on no one, Dani enjoys helping others in trouble; others call them her "charity cases".

Dani helped Rosie McNamara change from being a street hooker to a solid citizen. However, not long after her transformation, someone kills her. Upset, Detective Tifton and Dani investigate the homicide and the rapid killing of five other women; six dead in a week. The clues lead to a former lover photographer Mitch Sheridan who has quit the camera that had been an appendage of his for years. Mitch seeks redemption and he begins to believe Dani may prove his redeemer as the death toll mounts.

The latest Sheridan romantic suspense (see One Scream Away) is a taut police procedural with a great twist that enhances the exciting investigative story line. Dani is terrific as she has plenty to prove to her superior and Internal Affairs as she knows everyone except field cops expect her to be a chip off the rotten block. The romance takes a back seat to the strong whodunit as Kate Brady provides her audience with an exciting action-packed thriller.

This one fell short of the mark

I very much enjoyed Brady's debut book but this one didn't strike the same chord. Dani's tough as nails exterior just came across as petty and abrasive and Mitch never really came alive. By the end of the story I still didn't feel like I knew him and I certainly didn't understand what he saw in Dani. I also had a hard time believing they still had feelings for each other after eighteen years. I did enjoy the villain, but the action scene at the end was a bit anti-climatic. All in all, not one I'd recommend.

    Bridget's Review

Kate was added to my favorite author's list after I read One Scream Away. Her knack for romance and suspense keeps a reader intrigued from cover to cover. I love Dani and Mitch and I enjoyed helping track down the killer.

Just as good as her last book!

This book was provided for review by Hachette Book Group.

I LOVED Kate Brady's One Scream Away. It was such a well-written book. So I had really high expectations with this one. I was blown away. I didn't think Brady's writing could get much better, but I was wrong.

I love the way Brady can get into the mind of the killer and give us a peek as to what's going on in their heads. Why they are doing what they're doing, why they think they are justified, all of it... It makes for a great story.

I liked Dani, and I think her nickname Nails was perfect for her. She was so tough, but as with all strong heroines in romance she had a soft spot, and his name was Mitch. I liked Mitch, but I didn't really connect all that well with him. I didn't really come up with a "picture" of him in my head. As I'm reading I play the scenes out in my head and anytime Mitch was in the scene he was just a dark shadowy figure to me. Not sure why, as he was a well developed character.

I love Brady's writing and was so excited when I was given the opportunity to review another of her books. I really enjoyed it, and because I had been anticipating it for so long, was kind of sad when it ended. I will be on the lookout for her next novel.

    Masterful

Author Kate Brady has won or been a finalist in many writing contests, including the Golden Heart from the Romance Writers of America, the Maggies, and the Suzannah. When not writing, she is a full-time choral conductor and assistant professor of music education. Her other title, One Scream Away, (a 2010 RITA Finalist for Best New Book and for Best Romantic Suspense) was her debut novel for this "Sheridan" series. She resides with her husband and two children.

When acclaimed photojournalist Mitch Sheridan receives a frightening call from his mentor one night, he hops a plane and travels across the globe, where he's been hiding since a tragic accident took away any will to continue his art. But coming home has a different form of pain in way of memories. Detective Dani Cole is heading the investigation into Russell Sander's murder, along with a string of disappearances and murders tying all three of their pasts. The old attraction between Mitch and Dani heats again as they race to find a killer right under their noses. And this time, Dani is this calculating killer's last target on a list bent on revenge.

This is book two in the Sheridan series, following One Scream Away.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again--Kate Brady knows how to blend romance and suspense into a killer plotline with page-turning urgency. This is an author who knows her police procedure and how to pace a book very well. The setting, near Lancaster, Maryland, was a perfect, well-described backdrop. And the killer was unique not only in whom, but motive as well. The hero and heroine are relatable and layered, and there was such an intensity to this book not only in the heat between them, but in the suspense. Also true to form is the author's ability to stretch an ending instead of a swift, unsatisfying bang. Oh, and there's a great twist you may or may not see coming, but you cannot stop reading anyhow. I love that Neil returns from the first book as Mitch's brother. It was like welcoming an old friend. With old romances renewed, a murderer hiding in plain sight, a blended past so twisted you'll have nightmares, action like no other, and witty dialog--what's not to love? Masterful.
