Overview

Is this journey's end . . . or just the beginning?

Toklo, Kallik, Lusa, and Ujurak have finally reached the Last Great Wilderness, the legendary bear paradise they've been searching for. But while his companions think they've come to the end of their long journey, Ujurak feels a deep unrest. Is this truly where they're meant to be?

In the Last Great Wilderness, one by one the bears begin to remember their true natures. Toklo feels the urge to hunt caribou and mark his territory as a brown bear should, and Kallik feels the pull of the ice within her. It's only Lusa, happy just to be in the wild, who fears the day when her friends will leave her to follow their own paths.

As the bears adjust to this new life, disaster strikes. The friends are forced to venture into the world of the flat-faces to save the life of one of their own. Once there, the end of their journey seems farther away than ever, as a new path spreads out before them.

Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
“These stories will be welcomed by the Warriors series’ many fans.”
Children's Literature
When four bears—Ujurak, Lusa, Toklo, and Kallik—form an uncommon friendship, their shared journey reveals their many different facets. Although they have their own individual longings and innate desires in terms of their destinies, they look to the needs of each other before acting on their own wants. Ujurak teaches them the importance of following the internal voice that guides an individual. Through Lusa, they learn of determination and tenacity. Toklo provides protection and the spirit of a watchful big-brother. Kallik displays maturity and stability reminding the young ones to be cautious. The book's environmental message speaks loudly and serves as a much-needed reminder of the damage humankind is capable of inflicting on Mother Earth. The bears' discovery of the flat-faced world shows progress being made to the detriment of the planet's inhabitants. This enjoyable read with a message speaks to the heart and consciousness of the reader. Reviewer: Allison Fetters
VOYA
Having reached the Last Great Wilderness, Urujak, Toklo, Kallik, and Lusa believe their quest to find a home free of flatfaces is over. Instead, Urujak is forced to transform himself into human form after an accident leaves him near death. The flatface healer is kind, but he and his friends are no match for greedy politicians who want to develop the land and take the oil. Urujak is kid/bearnapped to a hospital where he can receive "proper" treatment. His friends follow as best they can, attempting to avoid both humans and the sticky, stinky oil that is apparently spilling across the ground just waiting to be absorbed into their fur. Exhausted and hungry but reunited, the four brace themselves for the next part of their journey—across the ice into Kallik's territory. Will they stay together? Will they ever find home? With new challenges coming, it's beginning to seem doubtful. The narration often reflects the energy level of the bears, dragging or moving briskly. Human characters are stereotyped as wise and understanding or mean and rotten. The tracking ability of the bears is a bit unbelievable, along with their uncanny avoidance of capture, but fans of the Seekers series won't mind the predictability that they will overcome all obstacles. Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    1. Also Known As:
Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes
    2. Hometown:
All three writers live in the U.K.

    This book is great!

The book I am reviewing is Seekers The Last Wilderness. This is the Forth book in a amazing series by Erin Hunter. She also has wrote the series Warriors. This book is an example of fiction. This book is about four bears Toklo,Kallik,Lusa and Ujurak Who set out on a Journey to save the wilderness. The four bears are growing apart and they need to come together to finish there journey. This book keeps you guessing whats next. This book suggests that if we don't stop polluting the animals will have nowhere to go. There is a setting in the book were they are in a oil town and they are destroying the wilderness."Until we came to this place,I didn't know why. I thought I was trying to find a place where bears can live safely. But it's more than that." I think this book was great. I think if you are going to read this book, rtead the whole series!

    Awesome Series

My 9 year old daughter bought the first seekers book with a B&N gift card. It sat for a while then she started reading it for homework and by the end of the week, it was finished. She said it was the best book she has read yet and can't wait to start the second book. She begged me to get the book, I bought the second and third Seeker books for Valentine's Day and wanted them to be a surprise. Every time we went to Barnes and Nobles prior to Valentine's Day, she pleaded with me to buy the second book. I said no we can't this visit. I asked, are they that good, she said yes there were. When she opened her Valentine's gift, she was so excited to have both the second and third books, she started reading them that day. She finished those pretty quickly. She received a B&N gift card from a family member and she bought the fourth Seekers book. She is waiting for a fifth one to come out. She loves these and she thinks she is going to start the Warriors series, which is by the same author. I highly recommend this book to a family that wants to get their child to read an adventure that they will remember!
