Editorial Reviews

ForeWord Magazine
The author’s degrees in pyschology and acting have helped him write a story that children will relate to.
Kirkus Reviews
Everyone wins in this comfortably conventional tale of a lightless young glowworm who finally gets the hang of lighting up. As friends look on laughing, little Leo grunts and squeezes-his problem not constipation, but the inability to strike a light. After retreating into a cave for a good cry, Leo remembers his mother's advice to keep practicing, and barrels out into an inspirational lightning storm. Muscarello depicts Leo and associates as chubby, neon-purple apostrophes wearing bits of clothing and bearing broad, Disneyesque facial features. Leo ultimately learns not only how to glow, but how to laugh along with his friends too; so, unlike Eric Carle's Very Lonely Firefly (1995), this is not about sex but self-esteem. Drachman tends to overwrite ("Like all people and bugs and fish and animals of every kind, Leo did not like to be laughed at"), but his fable makes an engaging companion for Robert Kraus's developmental tales, or Bernard Waber's classic about a bug with a related but opposite problem, A Firefly Named Torchy (1970). Packaged with a lively, multi-voiced dramatic reading on CD. (Picture book. 5-7)

    Highly Recommended

Leo the Lightning Bug is a wonderful children's book. I bought it for my 6 year old grandson. He loves the book and listens to the CD at bedtime and he falls asleep listening to it.

    Fantastic book for bedtime story

My 3 yr. old granddaughter and I have read this using a flashlight before she goes to sleep. Leo has a light which he gains confidence when he learns how to use it. We wind down the evening as Leo is told to turn off his lightning bug light when he goes to sleep at night. My granddaughter then happily turns out her flashlight and goes right to sleep like Leo. Then she will be rested and ready to face the day lighting up the world and having fun like the lightning bugs in the story. This is her favorite book and we have read it every night for 1 1/2 years eventhough she has many books.

    For My Leo

We were given this book for our son Leo. It's not our favorite, it's a little tedious to read. I don't think I would have purchased it had I chance to read through it before hand.

Buy it for your kids and grandchildren

I have bought Leo for my own granddaughter and copies for all the kids of my friends. They love it and ask to have me read Leo everytime I visit.

    A Definite Classic!

This tale and artwork is an instant hit. A simple but powerful story accompanied by illustrations that bend the boring, typical rules of a children's book. Drachman's Creative use of words bring this story to life not to mention the accompanying CD that pulls the reader even more into this enchanted world. Muscarello's Illustration's simply POP off the page and light up any young reader's imagination! Brilliant and with a moral to boot!

This is a charming story about a little lightning bug gaining confidence and learning to light himself up. It strikes the right balance of showing us something worthwhile, while also being lots of fun. The book is extraordinarily well-written and has first-rate illustrations, and ranks right up there with the best of children's picture books.

    A Charming and Delightful Book!

This adorable book not only enraptured me but it also delighted my six-year-old daughter as well. She not only read the book herself, she also played the CD and read along with it. Leo is just an enchanting little character who endears himself to young and old readers alike. I know I was right in there pulling for him to finally learn how to light up the night. I commiserated with him when his friends teased him and was joyful when he finally practiced until he got it right! I highly recommend this enchanting book. It is the perfect book for parents and grandparents to read to their children and grandchildren. It is guaranteed to delight readers of all ages.
