Ms. York really has a gorgeous voice, very classicasl. Kind of old broadway type. She's a great actress, and an exceptional singer. This shows a very good range for her. I liked hearinga different version of 'sooner or later'.She sang in the sondheim shoe "putting it together" on broadway in 1993, when she was impossibly young. That version was very funny, because she was playing it in a sort of dumb blonde/seductress way. She also has the other four actors to sing it with. (one of which was the Queen herself...Julie Andrews) Here, she does it a bit more sulrty, and it's impressive that she could adapt it for herself. I can't wait for more of work to be released, maybe some songs from her ultimate triupmh "Kiss Me Kate" will be included.Until then, this is a wonderful album that shows off terrific talent of the lovely Rachel York.

I was surprised to walk into the B&N store the other day and find a CD by Rachel. My daughter and I bought it right away. Rachel has an awesome voice and I feel she'll go far w/ her singing, as well as her acting. I know her family is very proud of her success. I'm very happy for her.

On Xmas day, BBC1 showed the film version of Kiss Me, Kate. I was astounded by Rachel York’s performance. I was so impressed that I went out and bought the DVD for 'Kiss Me, Kate' and 'Victor/Victoria'. She is funny, clever and so multitalented! She has the most fabulous voice I have ever heard and her range is amazing. When I found out that B&N in America was the only place selling this CD, I was so disappointed, what about the rest of the world! Then I was given the CD as a gift, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. As all the previous reviewers have said, she is simply wonderful. I sincerely hope she brings out another CD soon; one that reveals the even greater depth of her talent.

If you've only heard Rachel York's many Broadway personas, you have GOT to buy this CD! It's Rachel dialed down, like listening to her from the inside out. No vocalist out there today can wrap more emotion around a lyric than this gifted artist. This collection of a very contemporary take on some old standards gives the lucky listener the sultry sexiness of a Peggy Lee and the perfect phrasing of a Rosemary Clooney. The true tones of "My Funny Valentine" will melt your heart and "Fly Me To The Moon" probably has Sinatra smiling down from heaven. The arrangements are to die for, "Sooner or Later" is pure Rachel attitude and "The Best Is Yet To Come" is the best I've every heard this song performed. This would be the perfect Valentine gift for that someone special. Pop this CD in the player, throw another log on the fire and you've got yourself a major snugglefest!

What a smooth album! While these songs have been done many times before, Rachel somehow manages to make them sound new again. Though she certainly has Broadway chops, this CD proves that Rachel can easily cross over to the adult/jazz market.

Rachel York is a wonderful talent that was long overdue for a solo album. I was initially overly excited when I heard about this CD from BN. I was very disappointed to find that only BN was selling this CD, because I feel she deserves to be sold nationwide. But anything is better than nothing. This album includes a wonderful collection of classics as sung in a vocal, smooth jazzy way. However some cuts are expected to sound melancholy, others haunting and others jumpy - Rachel doesn't quite hit the bar with that. For those who are Rachel fans: you know the range, depth, color, tone and lusty patterns of her voice. This album, although had the potential to be quite amazing, doesn't show all the sides of her. If you're a fan, you know how great it can be, if you're not than you might just view this as another average "jazz" vocal recording. However I still encourage everyone to buy it because I am against piracy and I believe the multitude of sales from this CD will promote a second album or at least be sold outside of BN. Sophomore albums from new artists are usually better as well. Good but as if she's holding back. However if you haven't heard her before and you like soft smooth jazz for background dinner music - buy the CD. Better luck next time, here's hoping that there will be. "Time After Time" - great cut.

This is a brilliant entrée into the solo recording world for Rachel York. I am a huge fan of this gifted artist’s Broadway, film and television work, but this beautiful and jazzy retro CD is a real breakout for her. You get the sense that this is the true Rachel, unplugged and without stage makeup. Unlike the broad theatrical characters she has played, such as the ditzy blond Norma Cassidy in “Victor/Victoria” and the shrewish diva Lili Vanessi in “Kiss Me, Kate,” this is Rachel York set free. She is singing from her own heart, without restraints. “Let’s Fall in Love” shows off her pure voice and phrasing without the caffeine. It is yet another wonderful facet of a tremendously versatile and talented actress/singer. She has the rich and smooth qualities of Ella, Clooney, Lee, and Streisand in her voice, but her distinct and uninhibited vocal and emotional honesty is penetrating and will leave you breathless. There is absolutely nothing average about Rachel York or this CD. She is this generation’s legend in the making. People unfamiliar with her Broadway career just don’t know her yet. But they will – after falling in love with this CD!

Rachel is an incredible singer and this debut CD definitely shows her range and talent. If you want to hear old standards sung in a different way, you must buy this CD.

Diana Krall; Alison Krause and on the dias with these talented mesdames is Rachel York. Like the late Susannah McCorkle, Ms York has it all: the range, the hair raising ability to make the words of the song mean more than the sum of their parts. The clarity of her vocalizations are so good, and she is so free of elisons and other "gotchas" that to fail to be mesmerized by her wonderful voice is almost, well, criminal.

Rachel York interprets a song like no other performer I’ve ever heard. Every time you listen to her sing, it’s like hearing a song for the first time. She adds unexpected twists of emotion to her vocals that bring new meaning to old standards. I have heard all of these songs before by a number of artists, but never have I heard the words expressed quite the way Rachel York does. Aside from the fact that she has a magnificent, pure, silky-smooth and richly textured voice, she sings these songs from the heart. Her voice reflects what she feels, and it is beautiful. On this CD Rachel York has brought back the Big Band sound with her own special contemporary flair. In her voice there is a little bit of Ella and a little bit of Streisand, but her delicious sultriness is all her own. There’s humor in “My House,” sass in “Let’s Do It,” longing in “My Funny Valentine,” seduction in “Sooner or Later,” and love in every single note. If you don’t melt when you hear this incredibly talented woman sing, you need serious medical attention. She’s amazing. The orchestra backing her really swings, too!

I think 3 stars might be generous, but I might feel that way only because I know how unique and outstanding her voice really is, and this recording does not showcase that. It sounds as though she's restraining herself and attempting to play the part of the average lounge singer when she is so much more. I hate to think of people hearing her for the first time and thinking that this is all she can do. You can find her work on cast recordings for Putting it Together, The Scarlet Pimpernel, the latest DVD release of Kiss Me Kate, and some other titles as well. Her vocal acrobatics that sound easy but certainly are not and the distinct way she flavors every line make the listener think there is something truly special about her, but I'm afraid I can't find much of that on her debut solo album.
