Chris Fletcher and Ian McCallum started out as a hook-up: no names, no strings, no future. But fate seemed determined to throw them together and each time was better than the last. Ian couldn't help starting to think about forever.
Chris knew he shouldn't take the chance. His life was a web of lies, from providing his Navy fiancee Jenny with a beard to the details of his fictional childhood. Ian would hate being deceived and a crash was inevitable. But Chris had never felt so deeply about a man before.

When the lies came out, Ian did walk away. But fate wasn't done with them. Because Chris's life was in danger, and only Ian was close enough to help. Now Ian had to decide where the deeper truths lay, and whether what he felt for Chris was still strong enough to risk his safety and his heart.

Meet the Author

I've been writing as long as I can remember (which is longer than I like to admit). I started creating M/M romances in high-school, filling binders with stories about what Starsky and Hutch really did on their days off. (Pretty PG-rated stuff - we're talking sheltered fourteen-year-old here. I was into the romantic possibilities.) Any potential writing career got side-tracked by forays into art, psychology, teaching, and a biomedical profession. And the challenges of raising children.
When I took up the keyboard again it was just for fun, writing books for my own entertainment. At about manuscript seven, my epically patient spouse told me that if I was going to spend that much time at it, I should try to get published. And he kept saying it, loudly, until I submitted one. And it was accepted! (Really exciting!) That's Life Lessons that was published May 2011 MLR Press. A short story, And to All a Good Night, that follows it is available here for free. The sequel, Breaking Cover, came out from MLR in late July. And I'm currently in the editing process for other work, including a werewolf novel, Unacceptable Risk.

My Smashwords book, Lies and Consequences, started as a kind of reaction after the November 2010 elections when the DADT repeal looked like it might be derailed. Then I was caught by surprise as I finished the book in December and the repeal passed. I tweaked it by upping the action, and deemphasizing the DADT subplot. The result was something lightweight, but hopefully fun. So I put it out as a free read. I hope you enjoy it. As a new author, I really appreciate reviews - what you liked and what you didn't. Remember those other six manuscripts? (Okay, nine now.) Maybe your comment will help turn the next good book into a better book. KH

    more from this reviewer

    Recommended

This is basically a good-old-fashioned M-M romantic suspense. I liked both Chris and Ian, and Chris definitely has some issues that kept things from getting boring on the personal level. On the suspense level, damn. This definitely went places I did not see coming, and there were actually a few different things going on that kept you on your toes. This could have been confusing or over the top, but it worked, and it made it impossible to guess where the plot twists would come from. Things wrapped up nicely without wrapping up perfectly (which drives me crazy sometimes), and I would love a short story follow up just to see more of Chris and Ian (or even Jenny and Becca!).

    Excellent!

I fully enjoyed this book. The characters were compelling, the story moved along briskly and was well-plotted, and the action -- all the action (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) -- was exceptionally well written. I will definitely be spending money on more books by this author.

    Riveting.

Very well written. I loved it. I thought that the whole story was absolutely riveting. The erotic scenes were well placed in the plotline but didn't go into too much detail that it lost focus on the story like some other books i have read. I definately recommend this to any avid gay fiction reader. Simply the best i have encountered so far.

    A Must read!

I found this story through sheer luck. And oh, what luck it was. Kaje Harper is a writer whose gift with words is enough to make me cling to the edge of my seat in anticipation. Chris's character is undeniably flawed, but these flaws--his upbringing, his lies--are what makes him relatable. Ian is well rounded, with his solid presence and scathing wit. The female characters were flushed out, with their own agendas and their own presence. There are twist and plot turns that I could have never guessed at, and the sex scenes were delectable. This is a wonderful read, and I highly recommend it!

    Fun contemporary gay romance

This book has interesting lead characters and strong female secondary characters, which are missing in some gay romances. Pacing is good although the plot is a little unbelievable. I really liked the romance between the two men and got caught up in the story. For a free book, definitely worth a look.
