Overview

At the elegant Mercy Falls masquerade ball, Olivia's hidden identity will be revealed.

It is the dawn of a new century and Olivia Stewart is heiress to an empire. Her family numbers among the Four Hundred-those considered the wealthiest and most distinquished in America. Unfortunately their wealth has nearly disappeared, and now their security rests upon the Stewart daughters' marrying well.

Olivia's sister, Eleanor, was engaged to Harrison Bennett, one of the nation's wealthiest men, but has since died. Now the pressure is on Olivia to take her place, despite her suspicions about Eleanor's fiance. Using her family's long-forgotten English title, Olivia travels to Mercy Falls, California, as Lady Devonworth, hoping to learn more before committing to marriage. There she finds that Eleanor's death was no accident. And Harrison is not the man she thought he would be.

When Mercy Falls holds a charity masquerade ball to raise funds for the new lighthouse, secrets-and truths long hidden-will be revealed. But can Harrison really love Olivia when he finds her true identity? Can she live with the repercussions of failing her family, or will she finally realize that nothing-not money, family, or romance-will ever compare to God's unconditional love?

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When New York socialite Olivia Stewart's sister, Eleanor, dies in California under mysterious circumstances, Olivia travels to Mercy Falls determined to find out if her sister's fiancé, Harrison Bennett, had anything to do with it. The more she gets to know Harrison, the more convinced of his innocence she becomes. VERDICT Coble's historical series (The Lightkeeper's Daughter; The Lightkeeper's Bride) just keeps getting better with each entry. Coble has a strong feel for the time period (in this case, 1910) and has scripted believable characters in suspenseful situations. Recommend the series to fans of T. Davis Bunn and Marta Perry.

Chapter One

The New York brownstone was just half a block down from the Astor mansion on Fifth Avenue, the most prestigious address in the country. The carriage, monogrammed with the Stewart emblem, rattled through the iron gates and came to a halt in front of the ornate doors. Assisted by the doorman, Olivia Stewart descended and rushed for the steps of her home. She was late for tea, and her mother would be furious. Mrs. Astor herself had agreed to join them today.

Olivia handed her hat to the maid, who opened the door. "They're in the drawing room, Miss Olivia," Goldia whispered. "Your mama is ready to pace the floor."

Olivia patted at her hair, straightened her shoulders, and pinned a smile in place as she forced her stride to a ladylike stroll to join the other women. Two women turned to face her as she entered: her mother and Mrs. Astor. They wore identical expressions of disapproval.

"Olivia, there you are," her mother said. "Sit down before your tea gets cold."

Olivia pulled off her gloves as she settled into the Queen Anne chair beside Mrs. Astor. "I apologize for my tardiness," she said. "A lorry filled with tomatoes overturned in the street, and my driver couldn't get around it."

Mrs. Astor's face cleared. "Of course, my dear." She sipped her tea from the delicate blue-and-white china. "Your dear mother and I were just discussing your prospects. It's time you married."

Oh dear. She'd hoped to engage in light conversation that had nothing to do with the fact that she was twenty-five and still unmarried. Her unmarried state distressed her if she let it, but every man her father brought to her wanted only her status. She doubted any of them had ever looked into her soul. "I'm honored you would care about my marital status, Mrs. Astor," Olivia said.

"Mrs. Astor wants to hold a ball in your honor, Olivia," her mother gushed. "She has a distant cousin coming to town whom she wants you to meet."

Mrs. Astor nodded. "I believe you and Matthew would suit. He owns property just down the street."

Olivia didn't mistake the reference to the man's money. Wealth would be sure to impact her mother. She opened her mouth to ask if the man was her age, then closed it at the warning glint in her mother's eyes.

"He's been widowed for fifteen years and is long overdue for a suitable wife," Mrs. Astor said.

Olivia barely suppressed a sigh. So he was another of the decrepit gentlemen who showed up from time to time. "You're very kind," she said.

"He's most suitable," her mother said. "Most suitable."

Olivia caught the implication. They spent the next half hour discussing the date and the location. She tried to enter into the conversation with interest, but all she could do was imagine some gray-whiskered blue blood dancing her around the ballroom. She stifled a sigh of relief when Mrs. Astor took her leave and called for her carriage.

"I'll be happy when you're settled, Olivia," her mother said when they returned to the drawing room. "Mrs. Astor is most kind."

"She is indeed." Olivia pleated her skirt with her fingers. "Do you ever wish you could go somewhere incognito, Mother? Where no one has expectations of you because you are a Stewart?"

Her mother put down her saucer with a clatter. "Whatever are you babbling about, my dear?"

"Haven't you noticed that people look at us differently because we're Stewarts? How is a man ever to love me for myself when all he sees is what my name can gain him? Men never see inside to the real me. They notice only that I'm a Stewart."

"Have you been reading those novels again?" Her mother sniffed and narrowed her gaze on Olivia. "Marriage is about making suitable connections. You owe it to your future children to consider the life you give them. Love comes from respect. I would find it quite difficult to respect someone who didn't have the gumption to make his way in the world. Besides, we need you to marry well. You're twenty-five years old and I've indulged your romantic notions long enough. Heaven knows your sister's marriage isn't what I had in mind, essential though it may be. Someone has to keep the family name in good standing."

Olivia knew what her duty demanded, but she didn't have to like it. "Do all the suitable men have to be in their dotage?"

Her mother's eyes sparked fire, but before she spoke, Goldia appeared in the doorway. "Mr. Bennett is here, Mrs. Stewart."

Olivia straightened in her chair. "Show him in. He'll have news of Eleanor."

Bennett appeared in the doorway moments later. He shouldn't have been imposing. He stood only five foot three in his shoes, which were always freshly polished. He was slim, nearly gaunt, with a patrician nose and obsidian eyes. He'd always reminded Olivia of a snake about to strike. His expression never betrayed any emotion, and today was no exception. She'd never understood why her father entertained an acquaintance with the man, let alone desired their families to be joined.

"Mr. Bennett." She rose and extended her hand and tried not to flinch as he brushed his lips across it.

"Miss Olivia," he said, releasing her hand. He moved to her mother's chair and bowed over her extended hand.

Olivia sank back into her chair. "What do you hear of my sister? I have received no answer to any of my letters."

He took a seat, steepled his fingers, and leaned forward. "That's the reason for our meeting today. I fear I have bad news to impart."

Her pulse thumped erratically against her rib cage. She wet her lips and drew in a deep breath. "What news of Eleanor?" How bad could it be? Eleanor had gone to marry Harrison, a man she hardly knew. But she was in love with the idea of the Wild West, and therefore more than happy to marry the son of her father's business partner.

He never blinked. "I shall just have to blurt it out then. I'm sorry to inform you that Eleanor is dead."

Her mother moaned. Olivia stared at him. "I don't believe it," she said.

"I know, it's a shock."

There must have been some mistake. She searched his face for some clue that this was a jest. "What happened?"

He didn't hold her gaze. "She drowned."

"How?"

"No one knows. I'm sorry."

Her mother stood and swayed. "What are you saying?" Her voice rose in a shriek. "Eleanor can't be dead! Are you quite mad?"

He stood and took her arm. "I suggest you lie down, Mrs. Stewart. You're quite pale."

Her mother put her hands to her cheeks. "Tell me it isn't true," she begged. Then she keeled over in a dead faint.

* * *

Harrison Bennett tugged on his tie, glanced at his shoes to make sure no speck of dirt marred their perfection, then disembarked from his motorcar in front of the mansion. The vehicle had rolled up Nob Hill much too quickly for him to gather his courage to face the party. Electric lights pushed back the darkness from the curving brick driveway to the porch with its impressive white pillars. Doormen flanked the double doors at the entry. Through the large windows, he saw the ballroom. Ladies in luxurious gowns and gentlemen in tuxedos danced under glittering chandeliers, and their laughter tinkled on the wind.

His valet, Eugene, exited behind him. "I'll wait in the kitchen, sir."

Harrison adjusted his hat and strode with all the confidence he could muster to the front door. "Mr. Harrison Bennett," he said to the doorman.

The man scanned the paper in his hand. "Welcome, Mr. Bennett. Mr. Rothschild is in the ballroom."

Harrison thanked him and stepped into the opulent hall papered in gold foil. He went in the direction of the voices with a sense of purpose. This night could change his future. He glanced around the enormous ballroom, and he recognized no one among the glittering gowns and expensive suits. In subtle ways, these nobs would try to keep him in his place. It would take all his gumption not to let them. It was a miracle he'd received an invitation. Only the very wealthy or titled were invited to the Rothschilds' annual ball in San Francisco. Harrison was determined to do whatever was necessary to secure the contract inside his coat pocket.

A young woman in an evening gown fluttered her lashes at him over the top of her fan. When she lowered it, she approached with a coaxing smile on her lips. "Mr. Bennett, I'd hoped to see you here tonight."

He struggled to remember her name. Miss Kessler. She'd made her interest in him known at Eleanor's funeral. Hardly a suitable time. He took her gloved hand and bowed over it. "Miss Kessler. I wasn't expecting to see you here."

"I came when I heard you were on the guest list."

He ignored her brazen remark. "It's good to see you again. I have some business to attend to. Perhaps later?"

Her eyes darkened and she withdrew her hand. "I shall watch for you," she said.

And he'd do the same, with the intent to avoid her. "If you'll excuse me." He didn't wait for an answer but strolled through the crowd. He finally spied his host standing in front of a marble fireplace. A flame danced in the eight-foot hearth. Harrison stepped through the crowd to join the four men clustered around the wealthy Rothschild.

The man closest to Harrison was in his fifties and had a curling mustache. "They'll never get that amendment ratified," he said. "An income tax! It's quite ridiculous to expect us to pay something so outrageous."

A younger man in a gray suit shook his head. "If it means better roads, I'll gladly write them a check. The potholes outside of town ruined my front axles."

"We can take care of our own roads," Rothschild said. "I have no need of the government in my affairs. At least until we're all using flying machines." He snickered, then glanced at Harrison. "You look familiar, young man. Have we met?"

Flying machines. Maybe this meeting was something God had arranged. Harrison thrust out his hand. "Harrison Bennett."

"Claude's son?"

Was that distaste in the twist of Rothschild's mouth? Harrison put confidence into his grip. "Yes, sir."

"How is your father?"

"Quite well. He's back in New York by now."

"I heard about your fiancée's death. I'm sorry for your loss."

Harrison managed not to wince. "Thank you." He pushed away his memories of that terrible day, the day he'd seen Eleanor Stewart for what she really was.

"Your father was most insistent I meet you. He seems to think you have a business proposition I might be interested in."

Harrison smiled and began to tell the men of the new diamond mines that Bennett and Bennett had found in Africa. A mere week after Mr. Stewart's passing, Mr. Bennett had renamed the venture to include Harrison. An hour later, he had appointments set up with three of the men as possible investors. His father would be pleased.

Harrison smiled and retraced his steps to the front door but was waylaid by four women in brightly colored silk. They swooped around him, and Miss Kessler took him by the hand and led him to a quiet corner.

"Let's not talk about anything boring like work," she said, her blue eyes sparkling. "Tell me what you love to do most."

He glanced at the other women clustered around. "I'm building an aeroplane. I'd like to have it in the air by the time earth passes through the tail of Halley's Comet."

She gasped. "Do you have a death wish, Mr. Bennett? You would be breathing the poisonous fumes directly. No one even knows if the earth will survive this."

He'd heard this before. "The scientists I've discussed this with believe we shall be just fine," Harrison said.

"I assume you've purchased comet pills?" the blonde closest to him said.

"I have no fear."

The brunette in red silk smiled. "If man were meant to fly, God would have given him wings. Or so I've heard the minister say."

He finally placed the brunette. Her uncle was Rothschild. No wonder she had such contempt for Harrison's tone. All the nobs cared for were trains and ships. "It's just a matter of perfecting the machine," Harrison said. "Someday aeroplanes will be the main mode of transcontinental transportation."

The brunette laughed. "Transcontinental? My uncle would call it balderdash."

He glanced at his pocket watch without replying. "I fear I must leave you lovely ladies. Thank you for the conversation."

He found Eugene in the kitchen and beckoned to his valet.

Eugene put down his coffee cup and followed. "You didn't stay long, sir," he said. "Is everything all right?"

Harrison stalked out the door and toward the car. "Are there no visionaries left in the country?"

Eugene followed a step behind. "You spoke of your flying machine?"

"The world is changing, Eugene, right under their noses—and they don't see it."

Eugene opened the door for Harrison. "You will show them the future, sir."

He set his jaw. "I shall indeed."

"I have a small savings set aside, Mr. Bennett. I'd like to invest in your company. With your permission, of course."

Eugene's trust bolstered Harrison's determination. "I'd be honored to partner with you, Eugene. We are going to change the world."

Chapter Two

Birds sang in the shrubs that surrounded the tiny courtyard. Olivia hadn't thought her mother would be up to eating dinner, but once the matron was revived, she had taken charge again. Mr. Bennett joined them for the meal on the terrace, but there was little conversation after the servants dished up the soup.

Olivia fingered the locket with her sister's picture in it and wished she would awaken and find this all a bad dream. I don't believe it. She must have spoken, because Mr. Bennett's dark eyes were on her face when she put down her soupspoon.

"Eleanor was buried in Mercy Falls, California, yesterday. Those are the facts, Miss Olivia."

Did he not even care? His dark eyes held no emotion. "With none of her family there to mourn her?" she choked out. "Why were we not informed of her death before now?" She clutched her skirt in her fists.

"I asked Harrison to leave the conveyance of the news to me. In any event, you could not have arrived before her interment. I didn't wish you to receive this news via a telephone call or a telegram."

"What were the circumstances of her drowning? Did a boat capsize?"

He shrugged. "It appears she went swimming alone."

"That's impossible! Eleanor hated the water. She has never gone swimming in her life."

"Olivia, stop your interrogation at once," her mother said. "Nothing will bring your sister back to us." Her mother took a dainty spoonful of soup. "It is through no fault of ours that the marriage will not take place, Mr. Bennett. I expect you to uphold your part of the arrangement and sign the papers transferring fifty percent of the new mine to us."

Her mother's audacity dried Olivia's welling tears. She waited to see how Mr. Bennett would respond.

Mr. Bennett stirred sugar into his tea, then put his spoon back on the saucer. "I'm afraid that's impossible, Mrs. Stewart. It's too bad your husband's dearest wish is unable to be fulfilled." He pursed his thin lips. "There will be no property transferred without a wedding."

Her mother's smile was ingratiating. She glanced from Mr. Bennett to Olivia. "Well then, I still have a marriageable daughter. Without a blue-blooded wife, Harrison will always be merely nouveau riche and outside the best society."

The man nodded. "The agreement between your husband and I was that the two families be joined. I do not care how that is achieved. One daughter is as good as the next."

"Your son can't possibly change his affections so hastily," Olivia said. The man shrugged his slim shoulders. His mustache twitched. "He'd barely met Eleanor before her death. He is amenable to doing what is best for his family. He will still be agreeable."

Olivia hardly knew what to say, how to stop this insane proposal. She knew her mother was stressed. Six months ago her father had died when the tunnels of a newly acquired African diamond mine collapsed on him. His body was never recovered, nor were his financial investments, which had been exhausted along with the old mines. Time since then had seemed an eternity of watching pennies and struggling to pay the servants while keeping whispers of their change in fortune secret from the society in which they moved. A well-made marriage would give Olivia the power to change their circumstances. But the cost was so high.

Collen Coble has done it again!

Colleen Coble's third venture into historical romance and mystery in the California coastal town of Mercy Falls is as intriguing and entrancing as her first two ventures. I tend to read Ms. Coble's novels straight through without putting them down and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. I have thoroughly enjoyed each one of the 'Lightkeeper's ...' series.

Love blended with mystery and suspense

It took me a long time to start it, but when I started, I couldn't keep off myself from reading it! It is very easy to follow, but very exciting too.
"The Lightkeeper's Ball" by Colleen Coble is the third book of the series and it's a romance blended with mystery and suspense. You can see how the hate between the young man and woman turns into very strong love (although this happens somehow quickly). While sharing the deep emotions of the two young people, you also feel the horror, because there is a bad guy who consistently tries to kill this woman for the sake of revenge and money. And of course the love always wins as the woman is saved by her lover, her hero every time she is in danger. I like that it's hard to guess the bad guy. There are many options, but none of them comes true, the real one is a surprise!
This is not a pure romance, but it has some religious points. The book emphasizes the strength in faith and God, but not too densely. When viewed from this aspect, we can say the book is also about the journey of the protagonists in search of themselves, their personalities. Also, whenever Olivia is in danger, she learns that God hears her voice, which can be interpreted as the miracle of the God.
I truly recommend this book. Now, I'm very curious about the other books of the author.

Right amounts of mystery, suspense and romance

Olivia Stewart's mother is getting her to marry Harrison Bennett for financial reasons. The Stewart family used to be wealthy and distinguish but unknown to many, their wealth is nearly gone. Now, they are dependent on Olivia's marriage for financial security but there's a problem. Olivia's sister, Eleanor, was engaged to Harrison before she died. There are rumors that her death was no accident, that it was brought about by either suicide or murder. Olivia intends to unravel the mystery of her sister's death before committing to marrying Harrison, the man who she thinks might hold the key to the mystery. There were right amounts of mystery, suspense and romance in The Lightkeeper's Ball to keep a reader continually turning the pages. Colleen Coble cleverly weaves the story in such a way no one will suspect or guess who the murderer is and readers will never know the truth behind the murder mystery until the final chapters. The Lightkeeper's Ball is the third book in the Mercy Falls Series and it can be read as a stand-alone. There is hardly any hint that this book is part of a series and nothing in the story relies on previous incidents from the other two books. I thought that it was strange that Harrison could propose to Olivia without knowing her first name. Men don't propose to women with just knowing their titles but not their first names! Also, Olivia was dodging many of his personal questions and it's a wonder that he could propose to a woman who did not trust him with certain necessary personal information. Overall, I had a fun time reading The Lightkeeper's Ball. I like the way the story alternates between focusing on Olivia and Harrison. It was good to be able to read their different perspectives and thoughts on the various situations.

Excellent continuation of the Mercy Falls Series.

Another excellent book in the Mercy Falls series that Colleen Coble has made famous. Her books never disappoint her readers. They only add to their love of reading her spiritually based books. As with most of our lives, if we turn to God in times of praise as well of times of problems that we need helped with, our life's' pressures are eased tremendously. Mercy Falls is in a picturesque seaside location in California. It has a lighthouse that has safely guided many ships from the rock bound coast. When a storm completely disables the lighthouse by ruination, that particular area becomes a huge danger to ships that are expecting the Mercy Falls Lighthouse, manned by Will and Katie Jesperson, to show them the way around the dangerous rocks, unaware that the lighthouse was out of commission. Olivia Stewart is a member of the rich and famous Stewart family but few knew that the family was having a financial crisis with the money becoming scarce. Olivia's sister, Eleanor Stewart, had been engaged to Harrison Bennett, also a member of a wealthy family, but she was found dead and the cause of death was thought to be suicide. But the Stewart Family, especially her sister Olivia, did not agree with the cause of death. Olivia traveled to the Mercy Falls area to attempt to find the real cause of her sister's death. An attempt was made on Olivia's life making her all the more sure that Eleanor did not commit suicide. Olivia made herself known as Lady Devonworth thinking that she might get better assistance if they all knew of her as someone not in the Stewart Family. When the lighthouse was destroyed, Lady Devonworth made plans for a masquerade ball to raise money for the much needed lighthouse. She found a letter telling her mother that Harrison Bennett was a dangerous man and to stay away from him at all costs. Naturally Olivia (Lady Devonworth) met Harrison and as time went on she could not see how this man could kill anyone. She became cautious but there seemed to be a flame there between Olivia and Harrison. Several other attempts were made on several lives including Olivia's. There are several twists and turns that only enhance the story that take the reader deeper into the mystery-taking place in the area. One part of the story has Harrison taking Lady Devonworth flying in his aeroplane that crashes because of some sabotage on the fuel line. They are both safe except for some cuts and bruises and a badly sprained ankle for Lady Devonworth. They crashed far away from civilization so they had to find a safe spot to stay the night, which, of course Olivia knew would tarnish her reputation being alone overnight with Harrison. All this did was make the two of them fall in love more deeply. They are rescued and yes, the lady's reputation was tarnished even though they both knew nothing went on inappropriate. But Olivia still could not tell Harrison who she was in fear that he would bolt from her life. I don't want to ruin the plots and sub-plots in this magnificent story. You must read it to thoroughly enjoy this new book of Colleen's. I highly recommend it. It has romance, mystery, cunning acts by several you don't expect them from, and a wonderful trip to the past with some great characters.

A fun peek into the past

Olivia Stewart, heiress to an empire, is living a lie. Her family's money is gone, and she must marry a man named Harrison Bennett-a man she's never met-in order to keep what little they have. But when news of her sister's death reaches her, Olivia only wants to learn the truth of how her sister died. She sets out to Mercy Falls, California under a different name, hoping to learn more about her sister's death and the man her mother intends for her to marry.

What she discovers about both surprises her but only gives her more reasons to continue living a lie with her false name. Will Harrison still want to marry her when he learns how she has been deceiving him? And what if the person responsible for her sister's death decides to come after her next?

I adore novels set around this time period (1910). I found this story fun. Certain parts were a bit predictable, which is often the case with romance novels-though the murder mystery reveal totally surprised me. I liked that Harrison loved airplanes and built one himself. It was fun to peek into the past in such a way, when air transportation was first being discovered. Overall this was a very enjoyable historical romance read. And doesn't this book have a gorgeous cover?

    Intriguing, Mysterious and Fun!

The dazzling cover of this book made me stop and stare - then pick it up to see what was inside. I was so thankful for a review copy so I could discover the mysteries this book held! I've enjoyed several of Coleen's books and was excited to have the opportunity to read her newest book.

The Lightkeeper's Ball is the third book in A Mercy Falls series; I was worried I'd be lost because I didn't read the first two. As I read I didn't feel like I was lost at all, but it did make me want to read the first two books in this series called, The Lightkeeper's Daughter and The Lightkeeper's Bride.

Eleanor is dead! Drowned! (I was gripped by this books dramatic beginning) Olivia and her mother can't believe their ears. Olivia doesn't believe she drowned- Eleanor hated water how could she have drowned? Something's fishy about all this and Olivia was going to get to the bottom of it but how? She comes up with a plan to go to Mercy Falls using her official title "Lady Davenworth." No one in Mercy Falls has met her so using this identity would allow investigating her sister's death a lot easier.

Olivia - "Lady Davenworth" meets up with Harrison Eleanor's fiancé in order to discover more clues to this mishap. Harrison is in the aviation business telling people that this is the transportation of the future. Harrison's father and others think he's crazy but his investors think he's onto something. It even catches the attention of Olivia. I really enjoyed the aviation aspect to the story; it was fun. I liked reading about a time of innocence, when everything was fresh, new and exciting.

Colleen Coble pens a engaging, suspenseful murder mystery I couldn't put down. Colleen's characters grabbed my heart, attention and made me smile. It also had a believable spiritual thread I liked. I loved all the behind scenes preparation as the reader saw how Lady Davenworth orchestrated a grand Ball event as a fundraiser for a worthy cause. I felt like I was at the Ball when the event finally happened. It was exciting!

Looking for a good summer read, or a monthly book club pick? I highly recommend The Lightkeeper's Ball. It won't disappoint!

I enjoyed the blend of romance and intrigue.

Olivia Stewart is on a mission to find out her is responsible for murdering her sister. She doesn't believe it was a suicide. Her most likely suspect is Harrison Bennett, who her sister was engaged to marry. She travels to California, using her title to hide her true identity, to confront Harrison. Liking him wasn't part of her plan. He tells her he had broken off the engagement just before Olivia's sister died. Olivia realizes she wants to believe him but if not him, who killed her sister? Olivia must work quickly because someone is after her. The father she thought had died in a mining accident seems to have been in hiding all these years and tried to warn Olivia's sister of the danger she was in. Olivia must figure out the truth.before it's too late.

I was not expecting the level of mystery in this book! I enjoyed the blend of romance and intrigue. I also didn't realize this is book three in the "Mercy Falls" series - I'm adding the other two to my "to read" list. I liked Harrison Bennett. The way Olivia kept getting into trouble annoyed me at times but she's a headstrong woman so I guess that's to be expected. And I absolutely love the cover of the book! That's honestly what got my attention in the first place. Overall a good book.

    Gorgeous Cover and Fantastic Book!

This book not only has one of the most gorgeous covers I have seen in awhile, it also has one of the best plot lines of the books I've read so far this year. I love Colleen's style, the way she develops her characters so beautifully, puts them in a setting that is so realistic that I feel like I'm there and then she artfully weaves story lines around the characters as she melds everything together. In this particular case Olivia is a strong heroine that wants justice for her sister and sets out to make things right and find out who murdered her. The very man she holds responsible creates a puzzle for her as she starts to doubt his guilt (and then slowly falls in love with him). She finds that she is in grave danger herself and whoever murdered her sister isn't done yet. What a great book!

This is a romantic mystery chartered to become a best-seller and MUST READ!

Eleanor hated the water. She couldn't even swim and stayed as far away from it as she could. That's why Olivia Stewart could not accept her drowning was an accident. She receives a prophetic letter dated a week before Eleanor's death and feels she must investigate Harrison Bennett, who was to be Eleanor's new husband in an arranged marriage.

If only Olivia had received her sister's letter a week ago, perhaps she might still be alive. Just what role did Harrison Bennett play in her sister's death?

Feeling the pinch of her family's financial position brought about by Olivia's father who died in African diamond mine cave in and now her sister accidental death, if she doesn't marry into the proper blue blood family, their fortune secret will be revealed and destroy their reputation among societies elite.

Aboard a ship bound for the west coast, Olivia finds herself pushed into the dark ocean water by a stranger lurking in the shadows. Plucked from the freezing waters of the ocean by none other than Harrison Bennett, who she hasn't seen since she was a child. Taking on the name, Lady Devonworth, Olivia will use that identity to get to know the real Harrison Bennett, without being swayed by his handsome good looks, wealth, and charm like her sister Eleanor was.

When a lighthouse home that Olivia was staying in collapses during a violent gale, she feels responsible to help with the rebuilding efforts since the Bureau of Lighthouses is lacking in funding. Especially since becoming friends with the owners, Will and Katie Jesperson and their adorable daughter, Jennie. Olivia decides to host a fundraising ball, "The Lightkeepers Ball" at her fathers mansion, Stewart Hall, that he built 4 years ago in Mercy Falls, California.

Yet what she learns of the true character of Harrison Bennett will forever alter the course her life is chartered towards and will put her life at risk more than once. Will she too become a victim of some unfortunate accident just like her sister Eleanor?

I received the book, The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble, compliments of B & B Media Group for my honest review and must say I was captivated by the mystery surrounding the death of Eleanor and what it will cost Olivia in the end. This is a must read romantic mystery set among the rocky coast line of the Pacific, where each page with leave you breathless and truly wanting more.

This is book three in the Mercy Falls series of books by Colleen Coble, with The Lightkeeper's Daughter and the Lighthouse Bride preceding this one. If you love a bit a mystery to your romance novels, then you will definitely want to pick this one up. It's great as a stand alone or to read as part of the whole series. This one definitely charted a 5 out of 5 stars!

    Loved it!

Olivia Stewart has always had her name, in fact she was often wondering if her name was the only thing that attracted her friends to her, and she was sure that was why most men wanted to court her. Marrying a Stewart was a boost to any man's business and life. So when her father suddenly died, and the money dried up, she didn't really know why, but knew that her mother was pushing her to make a good marriage. Olivia just wanted to marry for love. When her sister who was engaged to Harrison Bennett was found drowned in Mercy Falls California, Olivia knew that something was wrong. Eleanor was scared to death of water and would have never willingly went into water, no matter how distressed she was.
Traveling to California under her title, Lady Devonworth, Olivia wanted the anonymity to explore and investigate why her sister suddenly died, she also wanted to meet and get to know Harrison Bennett, since her mother was pushing her to marry him in her sister's stead. What she didn't know was whether or not she could trust him. Another thing she did not count on was being attracted to him. After arriving in California, several odd accidents to herself, leaves Olivia wondering who is trying to kill her, and why did her sister believe that their father was not dead. There is something wrong and Olivia must get to the bottom of it all, before she is killed.
I absolutely enjoyed this book, I read it while sitting in a waiting room, and was so disappointed when the person I was waiting for came out before I finished the last chapter, I had to read it the minute I arrived home. Definitely a great suspenseful story! I was so shocked when I got to the end finding out who was behind it all. Great story! 304 pages US $14.99 5 stars.

    Excellent

Colleen has done it again.what an exciting fast pace book! It will keep you guessing right until the end. Thought I had it at one time, but was wrong. Olivia is one tough Lady! Don't want to give things away, but you wonder how New York socialite Olivia Stewart survives.
This book is a great page turner! Loved the Historical aspects of this story....using Haley's Comet. You also add in aeroplanes, disasters, and murder! Great descriptions of the 1910's era!
What a great movie this book would make. This is the third book in the series, but it can be read alone with no problem.

    I Also Recommend:

    A Charity Ball Indeed!

Back at the dawn of a new century, Olivia Stewart and her family were numbered in the Four Hundred-allegedly the most wealthy and distinguished in America. The Stewart family's wealth had deteriorated, however, leaving the family to rest their security on the Stewart daughters marrying well.

Eleanor Stewart went West to marry Harrison Bennett, but she died before the marriage took place. So the pressure to marry well was shouldered by Olivia Stewart, aka Lady Devonworth, her English title. Using the latter title, she went out to Mercy Falls, California, to put to rest her suspicions of Eleanor's death being caused by Harrison Bennett, only to find it was no accident. But when she personally meets Harrison Bennett, she finds that he is not the man she thought him to be.

When Olivia holds a charity masquerade ball to raise funds for a new lighthouse, secrets and long-hidden truths are fully exposed. Will she lose Harrison's love? Her desire is to be loved for herself, not for her wealth status. Can she loosen her ties to money to find God's unconditional love?

Wow! Colleen Coble, in her book, The Lightkeeper's Ball, rocks you with fast-turning twists and plots from page one to the very end of the book! About the time you think you've figured out the culprit, she'd throw in another twist for you to untangle. The fast-paced plot twists kept me intrigued in a way that I haven't been challenged for some time.

The smoldering romance with all its bumps and twists keep you wondering if Olivia and Harrison will keep their eyes and hearts open to God and each other. Lies and innuendos abound, causing assumptions that could destroy their relationship. Plus the deadly attempts on Olivia's life up the ante of suspense, safety and fear. Who is behind all these attacks and sabotage? Colleen keeps the action moving at such a fast pace, you are 'forced' to continue reading to find the culprit!

I find that the historical era made it easier for the characters to continue to address Olivia as Lady Devonworth. The circumstances seemed to hide the upsets. The relationships between the maids and servants seemed appropriate for the time and wealth, as did the propriety between the many characters.

I haven't read any of the previous books in this series, but I found it easy to follow along with these characters. You will find Colleen's book a great read! But I do want to read the previous ones if this book is any indication of their complexity and suspense!

    Two Identities

Set in California, at the turn of the century, the reader gleans information about the various fears and opinions with the upcoming Halley's Comet, the future of airplanes, and the proper place for a woman.

There are some errors that make the reading bumpy. The protagonist, Olivia Stewart, decides to hide her identity and be known as Lady Devonworth. The framed photograph on Eleanor's dresser of Eleanor and her sister, Olivia, was taken just three months ago, yet no one in the household staff seems to recognize Lady Devonworth. How could this be? Another mistake happens in the cemetery, when Olivia states that she is unaware that Harrison's mother is alive; yet, the day before, she hears Harrison tell Katie that his mother came to watch him fly. Although these might be small items, they do cause this reader to stop, blink, and flip back pages to reason it out.

However, the suspicion of a murder and several attempts on Olivia's life succeed by causing a desire to read on and see what happens next.

Thank you to Audra Jennings at B&B Media Group for my copy.

Action and Mystery Infused w/ Romance, Edge of Your Seat to the End

After reading The Lightkeeper's Daughter I was in love with both the residents of Mercy Falls and the town itself (for the most part anyway). Coble's villains in all three books did their job well and the red herrings planted along the way were so enticing and believable that I never suspected till the final clues revealed the identity. Since these books all take place in Mercy Falls and occur in chronological order it is best to read them all in order since some recurring characters are introduced early on. However as standalones each title functions independently. Due to not having the first book available for a quick refresher reading this third title I was able to assess it as a standalone despite having read its precursors. Olivia Stewart has just lost both a father and a sister the latter death announcement to Olivia and her mother opens the story. The suspicious circumstances lead both to believe an accident or suicide are neither one plausible. Since the only remaining option is foul play someone must determine the truth. Since her father's partner in a diamond mining operation overseas insists that they will only be given rights to half the production of a second mine if his son marries into the family, Olivia is instructed she must marry her dead sister's intended for the sake of the family finances. Olivia is adamantly opposed to a marriage of convenience and being desired only for her status or wealth. As such she decides to visit Mercy Falls incognito to not only find out what really occurred the day she lost her sister but to observe the man everyone wished her to marry. Along the way to solving this primary mystery Coble throws a few more wrenches into the works which may all somehow intertwine yet several of them still mislead our heroine and her friends. Though this novel is a romance at its heart, Coble has woven a plot free of many predictable devices commonly found in this genre. Interspersing a fair amount of mystery and suspense not only keep the story "flying" but hook the reader into a book they won't want to put down. The faith elements are incorporated naturally into the character development and not thrown in the reader's face. On top of all the rest Coble manages to incorporate enough action scenarios with the natural flow of the plot that these stories are far from a typically sweet but relatively stagnant romance novels.

A little bit of romance with some intrigue thrown in!

A little bit of romance, plus a little bit of intrigue, with a little history mixed in, gives you The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble. Lovely Olivia Stewart, New York socialite, finds that her sister Eleanor who moved to California to marry her Father's business partner's son is now dead. Determined to get to the bottom of this mystery and find out what caused her death, Olivia heads west to see who is responsible. With her first suspect being Harrison Bennett, her sister's fiance, she arrives in Mercy Falls, CA using her formal name of "Lady Devonworth" so that she might try to ascertain who killed her sister without others knowing her true identity. But as she gets to know Harrison Bennett better, she soon realizes that he is probably not the one who killed her sister and she also realizes that her feelings for him are going beyond what she expected. Harrison finds himself kept rather busy rescuing Olivia time after time as she face several perilous situations. Could the same person who killed her sister be after her as well? Things get even more complicated as family secrets emerge from both sides. This adds to the intrigue as there are several characters that are not who they seem to be.

Colleen Coble did a good job in showing the progression of the journey that Olivia takes in the book. She has been raised to be concerned with primarily outside appearances, both physical and social standing. As the character of Olivia grows you find her exploring the fact that she is so much more than that. Harrison takes a journey of his own, which is quite similar actually. He finds himself being crushed under the "go into the family business" expectations that often fall on the shoulders of the son of the family. Both have expectations on them given by their parents that they need to figure out with regards to their decisions for their respective futures.

This mystery/romance was an enjoyable and quick read. As in many stories this one hits on the "honesty is the best policy" theme as without it trust is eroded in a relatsionship. There are a few times in this story where things start to unravel because of this, but in the end truth and forgiveness win out.

So for those that enjoy romance, intrigue, and oh let's throw a masquerade ball in for good measure, I think it's a safe bet to say that you will enjoy this book.

An amazing piece of historical fiction

It is the early twentieth century, and the Stewart family finds that they have been cut in a deal that economically changes their lives for the far better. It all depends on the marriage of Eleanor Stewart, a girl of twenty-some in the Stewart family, to Harrison Bennett, the son of Eleanor's late father's former business partner. All goes well, until Eleanor's body is found dead. Drowned. Eleanor's slightly older sister, Olivia, is next in line for the marriage, but she travels in disguise to the town of Mercy Falls, where the Bennetts live, in order to find out what really happened. She knew that Eleanor was afraid of water, and if she were to commit suicide, it would not be by drowning herself, and thus she suspected foul play. Before long, she is soon working with Harrison, of whom she suspects of assisting the possible murder, and of whom she is eventually supposed to marry, to reveal a much greater scheme than just one murder.

To tell the truth, the reason why I got this book, The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble, was because it was for free. I just recently joined a website that is run by the publisher Thomas Nelson, which gives out free books for bloggers to review. I chose this book because it was one of the only fiction books available. It looked like a girly novel, sure, but it was fiction nonetheless. The thing is, though, one I started reading it, it was hard to put down.

I loved the story. This is truly a mystery novel, with elements of thriller and romance sprinkled in. Parts of the book were just downright creepy, and coming from a novel that is "officially" in the romance genre, that is just plain awesome. It is true, this was written by a girl and for girls, but I enjoyed the whole trip through. I love thrillers, so the parts of the book that I would consider "thriller" almost made me visibly grin.

The Lightkeeper's Ball is many things. A story of finding truth, a murder mystery, a love story. I really recommend it to you if you're a girl. I would recommend it for boys, too, except I've learned from experience that it's awkward for a boy to walk around carrying a book that has a cover such as this one.

    Mysterious

I love a good romance as I love a good mystery. This book has it all. It's a historical romance where there is a handsome and slightly dangerous hero(who might be also be the villain) for me to swoon on; and also a delicious hint of mystery. Who is it who wants to harm Olivia?

There are enough twist in the plot to keep the suspense going in this book. I am not ashamed to say that I cheated. I flipped to the ending coz I can't stand the suspense. I wanted to know how the story ends

I would recommend this book to those who love romance and mystery.

This is the 3rd book of Mercy Falls Series. Don't worry. This book can be read independently from the other two books. How I wish I could lay my hands on the other two books.....

    Great read!

The cover for this book is so pretty-the dress on the front cover is gorgeous-and it's actually one of the reasons I decided to choose this book. I really enjoyed reading it as well. The characters were great, the setting was easy to get into, and the plot was intriguing. The first chapter or two seemed a little slow, but the rest of the story's pace is fast, and the mystery is wrapped through all of it. I really like the historical facts that were added in, but not in a "show not tell" way, and added to the story. I would definitely say this one is a good read, especially for anyone who likes to read historical fiction and mysteries.

    Mystery and Romance

The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble is set in 1910, an evolutionary time in America. Olivia Stewart, an heiress, travels to Mercy Falls, California, disguised as Lady Devonworth from New York, to uncover the identity of her sister Eleanor's killer. She suspects the murderer is Harrison Bennett, Eleanor's fiance through an arranged marriage by their fathers. Through twists and turns, clue by clue, the author leads the reader to the truth.

Although this novel is the third in the Mercy Falls Series, it stands alone. It is labeled as a Christian Romance, but I believe it should also be listed as mystery and suspense. I enjoyed the history of this book and the many situations lived by these characters which include the earthquake and Great Fire of San Francisco, the invention of the aeroplane, automobile, women's rights and the personal struggle of freedom and reputation, African diamond mining, and the attempt of the wealthiest Americans to maintain a lifestyle they could no longer afford.

As I read this book, there were several points I thought I had Eleanor's murder solved. The next chapter's clues revealed my suspicions were incorrect. A great mystery writer has the talent and ability to bring the reader to the end of the story to reveal every detail and not before. Colleen Coble is such a writer. If you enjoy mystery intertwined with romance, you will want to read The Lightkeeper's Ball by this talented writer.
