Overview

The Listener is Taylor Caldwell's inspiring story of how ordinary people, full of hopelessness and despair, from all walks of life, find the inner peace they desperately need. Each chapter is a modern parable of someone who has lost faith in themselves, the people close to them, or the world in general. In his final days on this earth, John Godfrey built a beautiful sanctuary which had inscribed above its portal: 'The Man Who Listens'. Because of man's need for someone to truly listen, suffering people were drawn to this place at all hours of the day and night. The Listener, although kept behind closed curtains, would reveal himself to those who were truly in need. True peace, hope and happiness were restored to all who poured out their soul to Him. This is a powerful novel of anguished souls on a self analytical, almost mystical, journey toward inner peace.

    Unforgettable!

This and many other Taylor Caldwell writings were read and admired many years ago with this book in particular standing alone. One of the reveiwers said you will see yourself or someone you know in these stories and that is absolutely true. The writing is superb, the individual stories are life changing. There are alot of Ms. Caldwell's books that I saved and moved to the attic for safe keeping. Little did I know that I was ruining them. If they ever become available on Nook they will be purchased no matter the cost (to a certain extent). All of her work is admirable, the characters and situations are timeless. The Listener is one of my favorites. All of her work is highly recommended.

You can identify with yourself or someone you know in this book.

This book is ageless and still valid. Disregard some of the fashions and a few minor details and you will see that this book still describes our feelings, emotions, situations and struggles today. I have recommended this book to others and have read it several times myself. If you can't find yourselve in this book perhaps you can find compassion for the people you know that strike a similiar resemblance. I have read a few of Taylor Caldwell's books and believe that she was incredibly ahead of her time.

    Someone DOES hear you!

I read The Listener over 25 years ago and still reflect on the lesson it offers. We are not alone - ever. There IS a Presence with us always. Like the characters in the book, we too need to stop, enter the quiet, and release ourselves to the strength of that caring Presence. The Listener, though fiction, can help us learn HOW to listen to that which is within us.

    Caldwell was brilliant!

I have read every one of Taylor Caldwell's books and consider her one of the most prolific wtiters ever. Among many favorites stands out "Dialogues With the Devil". A truly enlightening book with a great amount of insight into the human psyche. Too bad it is so hard to find. If you are able to pick it up, by all means, read it. It will change your life. I love Janet and I hope you do too.
