Mama lists 11 of Little Pookie's special attributes. The youngster's characteristics range from picky eating habits (watch those peas, please!) to a love of the outdoors. His brief responses add contrast to his mother's assertions. He gives an enthusiastic "Yes!" to dirt and grime, but his mother's comment that he enjoys baths receives a half-hearted "maybe" that says it all. His mom describes his favorite activities with pride. "You like the piano, though the keys are so high." Pookie's age-appropriate interests are spot-on; his father's oversized shirt trails on the ground when he plays dress-up. Reading a familiar story summarizes the love between mother and little one. Brisk pacing highlights spare rhymes that focus on the young ham's individualized preferences. Prolific Boynton's trademark format, ample white space and squiggly lines, adds delightful personality, from Pookie's bunny slippers to his wish for superhero flight. Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton

SANDRA BOYNTON is the beloved author and illustrator of over 50 books, with more than 30 million of them in print. Since 1975, her well-known greeting cards have sold more than 300 million copies, "mostly to family and friends," she says. She was the recipient of the 2008 Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Cartoonists Society's highest honor. Boynton is also a Grammy-nominated record producer and songwriter. Sandra lives, works, and goofs off in the foothills of the Berkshires with her husband, whitewater racer/expeditionist Jamie McEwan, and their four perfect children.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)
