Overview

McKenna's (My Big Fake Irish Life, 2011) first foray into science fiction mixes romance with techno-thriller in a dystopian world where "thinking for yourself caused death.". . . McKenna tells her story in alternating voices, weaving them together from a startling prologue to a predictable ending in a calm and steady voice of her own that suggests the machine world she envisions. . . . McKenna delivers a fascinating look into a chilling future firmly rooted in our present. — Kirkus Reviews

In 2095, every facet of society runs perfectly by computers and advanced technology. Citizens like Britannia Stone conduct their lives effortlessly with a genetically embedded barcode linked to Central, the world government. But this easy lifestyle, one without economical hardships, crime and disease, comes with a price—the freedom of choice. Now world citizens are beginning to mysteriously disappear. John Ettinger, a society inactive and member of the underground group called the Starters, knows the reason why. With the help of Kendall Knowlton, a highly-gifted psychic child, it becomes a race against time as Britannia and John join forces before they are next to disappear. They must stay alive long enough to reach Central's mainframe and destroy the enemy before the enemy destroys all of mankind.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
McKenna develops her central conceit uncomfortably well. . . [She] tells her story in alternating voices, weaving them together from a startling prologue to a predictable ending in a calm and steady voice of her own that suggests the machine world she envisions. . . Despite some flaws, McKenna delivers a fascinating look into a chilling future firmly rooted in our present. - Kirkus Reviews, February 2, 2012

A thrilling peek into the future!

What would happen if technology could think for itself? That's the premise of this creative peek into the future. It's 2095, and humans are so dependant on technology they fail to notice technology is no longer dependant on them. This is one enjoyable story!

Terrific Novel from the First Page

This book read like a movie. The author has a unique ability to describe the scene quickly, yet communicate so much detail that you feel you are there. I loved this story. Even though this a work of fiction, I couldn't help but see that our world today could easily become this future world of tomorrow. Chilling...

    Future of 2095

'Logging Off' was an exciting novel of the future world with computers. The names used and the description was so very real to what could be in the future. This was such a fantastic book that I couldn't put it down until I finished, and that was hard with the holidays. I am not a science fiction reader, but I really enjoyed this one. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a great book to read. I too feel if it was made into a movie I would enjoy seeing it.
