Overview

Looking down while falling up refers to my looking at earthly sources for fulfillment which God used to bring me closer to himself. My story involves a series of struggles with sexual lust and loneliness as well as a latent desire to follow after God which gradually replaced my lust and loneliness over time. The settings for my story include universities in the U.S., Canada, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Japan, Mexico, and elsewhere for shorter periods. My marriages include an American, a Norwegian and a Mexicana. My children were raised in three different countries. Their take on my story was so strong that two of them no longer speak to me. Nevertheless, I feel my story of struggling between sexual lust and a Christian life deserves to be read by others who may be going through similar struggles. If there is no larger appeal to my story then why has God allowed me to experience his mercy and grace other than to relate his victory in my life to others. My story took me through several different Christian denominations as well. But the basic story line is the struggle I had with trying to be a Christian while also harboring sexual lust within me. My lust caused me to marry at a too early age and much later leave that woman for another woman equally given to lust. The ensuing 22 year period generated havoc with my life as I tried to build a veneer of Christ over my sin. I sought to please each one equally and failed to please either. I gradually surrendered myself to God as my loneliness pressed me deeper and deeper into dispair. Eventually my prayers were answered in a way I could never have predicted and didn't deserve. While I have written several scientific texts this is my first attempt to write for a general audience. I hope my story sparks your attention and I hear from you.

Meet the Author

David Fischer, born in 1937, enjoyed a varied life as a university professor who lived and worked in nine countries. He began his education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and after a hiatus in two branches of the U.S. military, continued his education at Michigan State and Colorado State. As a professor he specialized in the study of natural resource economics and policy. His quest for understanding a variety of natural resources rather than specializing in one resource took him to different countries to study the issues surrounding their resource allocations. His career saw him publishing nine books and over 90 scientific articles. At the same time he was struggling with being a Christian, a husband and a father to three children, two of whom no longer have contact with him because of his seeing this book published. His Christian walk began with the Plymouth Brethren and went through several other denominations before settling in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. At no point did he enjoy the presence of a Christian mentor, or even of a father who was absent except for three tumulteous years in the author's teens. Nevertheless, the author's drive to excell and break through his barriers to enjoy a good education and later the necessary self-study to overcome his lack of knowledge of Christianity undergirded him. But he still had to be brought to the end of his lust and self-determination so he could finally rest in the God who created, redeemed and sustained him. His story may be your story.
