Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is the number-one New York Times-bestselling author of more than 150 novels, including High Noon, Angels Fall, Blue Smoke, and Northern Lights. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than 280 million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    Great Series

For an entertaining read, the In Death series never disappoints. The main characters are fun and take you away from the everyday humdrum, and the plots keep you guessing.

A very slow start but well worth the ending

If I had to made a decision on the first hundred pages - I'd have given the book a D but the rest of the book makes up for the terminally slow beginning. To me the beginning was very boring. If I hadn't read it before and remembered that I had enjoyed it I'd have stopped reading it - I remembered it being hard the first time, too. It's just astonishing when an author you love produces something you believe to be inferior work for them!!

You Never Forget Your First Screwed-Up Supercop Lt. Eve Dallas! ;)

I've been a fan of the Eve Dallas books since my wife brought LOYALTY IN DEATH home from a book tour and said I'd probably like it. She was right - I fell in love with Eve and all her messy contradictions (hard-nosed attitude covering her deep compassion and need for justice, loving but terrified to admit it even to her own husband, brilliant but borderline feral in social situations), along with the SF/mystery/steamy romance setting, from the first reading. This book, where a terrorist group named "Cassandra" with ties back to "The Urban Wars" thirty years prior is blowing up New York City landmarks, many owned by Eve's impossibly handsome if a bit shady Black Irish billionaire husband Roarke, was Penguin's successful attempt to break the series out to a mainstream audience - its combination of high-octane violent action and explicit sex scenes meant Penguin could obscure the (admittedly weak) Science Fiction elements and sell it as a straight thriller. Yes, this rings all the Content Advisory cherries: Graphic violence, including sexual violence against girls (Eve's flashbacks about her child rapist father) and women; explicit sex, both consensual and otherwise; and strong language, including frequent "F-bombs". None of them are gratuitous (in fact, they're essential to understanding the characters) but they are there - so if you object to any of these, You Have Been Warned. Even though Nora Roberts hadn't quite come out of the closet about "J.D. Robb" at that point, I kind of suspected during my first reading over a decade ago it had been written by a romance novelist looking to expand her horizons. If the plentiful and descriptive sex scenes, written more from a woman's viewpoint than a man's, weren't a giveaway, the character of Roarke certainly was. He was at that time the weakest element of the series - more a collection of "broody bad boy" romance novel wish-fulfillment cliches (rich, criminal past, good-looking in a dangerous way and potentially deadly - who nonetheless loves the female lead truly, madly and deeply!) than an actual living, breathing character. The writing on him as since gotten better as he shows odd bits of pettiness that Eve has to deal with (usually with amusement) and his own personal traumas prove to be complementary to hers. The story also offers a "B" romance as Eve's aide, Officer Delia Peabody, discovers that her violent dislike for Det. Ian McNab (who works under Eve's former partner, Capt. Ryan Feeney of the Electronics Detection Division) in fact hid an equally violent mutual attraction. This gets in the way of Peabody's visiting brother Zeke's apparently being involved in the death of wealthy man he's working for that ties in, ultimately, to the overall terrorist plot. You may or may not like this series, but Eve Dallas is one of the great detective-heroes in fiction. While Nora Roberts's SF may be more window-dressing than anything else, her mysteries are always strong and worth reading.

    I Also Recommend:

    Wonderful Series

Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb has a winning series here. Eve Dallas is the Homicide detective of the future and Roarke is her exciting sexy spouse. The mysteries keep you guessing to the end and romance is steamy while still sweet. The characters keep things interesting. I enjoy the images Ms Roberts gives us of her idea of the future. The imagery is clear, makes me, as the reader believe its really there while I'm reading the story. Even with all the extras, the murder mystery remains the main focus. She always throws in exciting twists that really keeps you on your toes. Sometimes Eve "just knows" who the killer is, but doesn't know how to prove it, and sometimes she struggles with the outcome until the very end. Either way, If you like mysteries, this series is going to keep your attention. The books can be read in order but don't need to be to be understood. Each book, while it may refer to things that happen in previous books, will stand alone.

One of my fave "In Death" books

I devour the In Death series for breakfast, lunch and dinner; sometimes they can get predictable and repetitive, but THIS one really had me in suspense.

The characters are masterfully woven into the story. The plot is great!

In this day and age of terrorism happening all over the world, the author brings you deep into the terror that must go thru the minds of the people trying to stop the terror attacks.

    Good stuff

This series is very good. I'm definitely a mystery fan, but don't like Sci-fi. Ms. Roberts has given me a way to enjoy it. Her writing is obviously well done, with her talent and experience in the writing field.
This story had a very interesting premise. It was kind of a cross between Die Hard 3 and 9/11. Ms. Roberts has developed Eve well, slowly, so we can grow with her. I like that Eve occasionally makes a mistake. Makes her seem more real. I was on the edge of my seat, and was surprised at the ending.
Her characters are well thought out, and I like how they grow with each new book. I like that I haven't figured out who done it yet.
Anyone who likes mysteries, sci-fi, and even a little non-graphic romance should give her a try.

Eve Dallas to the Rescue Again!

Nora Roberts' contunes to develop the Eve Dallas character and all the supporting cast members with every book. This story about a home-grown terrorist group is facinating, thrilling and sad all at the same time. Eve is growning into her relationship with Roark and I love this whole series!! I can't wait to read all the rest since I am reading them in the order that they were written, so I can keep the story thread going. I heard someone describe this series as Law & Order in print and I think that is a pretty accurate description if L&O took place 50 years from now!

JD ROBB does it again and again!!!

It was a complete surprise when I found out that the author JD Robb was really Nora Roberts. Ms. Roberts romance stories are the best ever printed and yet she surpasses herself when she writes as JD Robb. The suspensful and thrilling mysteries that bring the character of Lt. Eve Dallas to life keep the reader captured until the very end. Whether you have read the first in this series or the very latest, you will not be disappointed. Lt. Dallas was the product of a miserable childhood and because of this she becomes a police officer in the futuristic city of New York in the year 2050. Each book finds Lt. Dallas, Rourke (her husband), her police team and some friends winding their way through yet another heart stopping murder mystery. In each book Eve continues to fight for those who 'can no longer stand for themselves' and stand she does!! Each book is complete unto itself and yet, as I did, I believe that you will find yourself seeking to read them all. To help you know the order they have been released, I have included them: Naked In Death, Glory In Death, Immortal In Death, Rapture In Death, Ceremony In Death, Vengeance In Death, Holiday In Death, Conspiracy In Death, Loyalty In Death, Witness In Death, Judgment In Death, Betrayal In Death, Seduction In Death, Reunion in Death, Purity in Death and Immitation In Death released in August, 2003. Enjoy them all -- you'll never be sorry.

    Love all of them

I was just looking for a book one day and grabbed Rapture in Death off the shelf. After reading that one I discovered it was part of a series and over the last four months I have read all through this one and am now working on Judgment in Death. I love this series and get so engrossed in the book all I want to do is read. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes mystery and romance. It is nice to have a series that continues for more the two or three books. These were the first books I read by Nora Roberts and I now plan to read some of her other ones while waiting for the next story about Eve and Roarke.
