Overview

A girl who’s been lied to her whole life…
Near her eighteenth birthday, Margaret Lenora Caine finds a chest hidden in the attic containing proof that she was adopted. The daughter of wealthy merchants in Seattle, she feels betrayed both by her real parents and by the ones who raised her.

Maggie desires a place where she belongs. But her mother’s constant criticism and reminders that she doesn’t fit the mold of a young woman of their social standing have already created tension in their home. With the discovery of the family secret, all sense of her identity is lost.

When Maggie asks to visit her grandmother in Arkansas, her father agrees on the condition that she take her Aunt Georgia as a chaperone and his young partner, Charles Stanton, as protection on the journey. Will she discover who she really is and, more importantly, what truly matters most in life?

Maggie’s Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley McKenna's Daughters

Maggie’s Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley
    McKenna's Daughters Series Book 1
Margaret Lenora Caine remembers better times, times when her Mother loved her. These days it was like she wanted to mold Maggie into someone else. She also was against Maggie using her talents as a dress designer. Her grandmother Agatha designed dresses and Maggie longed to visit her and learn more. After her eighteenth birthday she was finally allowed to go from Seattle to Little Rock, Arkansas along with her Aunt Georgia and her fathers partner, Charles Stanton. A young man Maggie had grown up with and hoped one day to marry. By the time of her travels though Maggie had found something her parents had hidden from her, she was adopted. And on the trip she realized that maybe Charles was not the man for her either. Maggie no longer knew who she was.

Florence Caine had become a bitter woman. She held dark secrets in her heart from the night of Maggie's birth. When Maggie left for Little Rock, Florence realized how shabbily she treated her precious gift and added more guilt in her life. Her husband Joshua set out to remind her what life use to be like and how much in love they were.

Charles Stanton had just became partners with Joshua. Combining their two businesses. And he was now headed on an adventure with two lovely women. Life was good.

This is book one of what looks to be a three book series. Mary's Blessing is book 2. I really enjoyed Maggie’s Journey. It had Maggie's struggles, how Florence allowed the guilt in her mind and the lies from it to change who she was, Joshua's love for his wife and daughter and the decision to restore his marriage. Charles struggling with his pride. Adventure, romance, and real life struggles.

Her whole life has been built on lies!

Margaret Lenora Caine or Maggie as she is known to her close friends and family is very special, just doesn't know how special until she ventures into her attic looking for a dress she can remake to wear to her 18th birthday party. While searching for something she can use, she comes across a white chest which contains an old photo that looks just like her and a letter from Angus McKenna signing over his rights to Joshua and Florence Caine, her parents.

Maggie and her mother have been at odds during the last few years and Maggie can't figure out why. Her mother does what she can to crush all her hopes and dreams of becoming a dress designer because she doesn't believe a woman should work. She should be busy running a household, planning parties and shopping while her wealthy husband supplies all the money they need. But that isn't what Maggie wants at all. She wants to work and run her own dress shop like her grandmother in Arkansas. When she asks her father for permission to visit her, her father grants her request so long as she travels with her aunt Georgia and his business partner, Charles Stanton.

She hopes that her and Charles will get to know one another more during the two week train ride but when Charles shows more interest in her aunt Georgia than her, she vows she will only be Charles' friend and work towards doing all she can to learn about the dress making business. Will Maggie discover who she really is in the process, and more importantly, what really matters most in life?

I received Maggie's Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and LOVED it. Struggling with some unprecedented news prior to her trip, I think it really provides Maggie with an opportunity to understand what life is all about and how certain decisions are made in her best interest even though she may not always understand them at the time. I rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars for my honest review and look forward to more books by Lena Nelson Dooley in the future.
