Overview

McKenna has always excelled at school and in gymnastics, but now that she's entering fourth grade, school suddenly feels hard to her. When McKenna's teacher suggests she get a reading tutor, she's horrified - until she gets to know her tutor, Josie, who is super-confident and who also happens to be in a wheelchair. Josie helps McKenna realize that what might seem like a giant roadblock is really just a series of small obstacles that can be overcome one by one, day by day. McKenna's confidence starts to blossom, but then something happens at the gym that sidelines her completely. Will she recover in time to join the competitive team in the spring?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
McKenna's life is gymnastics. She has been in gymnastics since she was three-years-old. Her world suddenly changes with an email from her teacher, Mr. Wu, and a "dessert date" with both her parents. They are all concerned because her grades are slipping. Fourth grade seems to be extra hard for her. Mr. Wu thinks McKenna would benefit from working with a tutor. Her parents agree, and now the choice is hers: get tutored or no more gymnastics. No gymnastics? She knows she has to do better in school, but give up gymnastics? The idea of a tutor has her mortified. What if her friends find out? When she meets her tutor, Josie, the young lady is in a wheelchair. How can she understand McKenna's passion for gymnastics when she can't even use her legs? As their relationship develops, McKenna begins to realize how brave her tutor is. But she is still too embarrassed to be seen being tutored, so she lets her teammates believe she is taking extra gymnastic training. When her secret is finally revealed, her friends are hurt and angry. This book is great reading. The storyline is very "today" and the artwork is superb. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
