Janice Capshaw, running alone on the beach late at night in the quiet town of Moonlight Cove, is stalked and brutally killed by blood-hungry creatures. Her sister Tessa comes to investigate the reported "suicide" and barely escapes from her motel when murderous hunters come to slaughter the guests. Taking refuge in a brightly lit launderette, she encounters Sam Hooker, an FBI agent investigating the mysterious deaths of a group of labor organizers. He has just uncovered a plot to transform all of the residents of Moonlight Cove into "new" people before midnight the next day. Together with 11-year-old Chrissie Foster and Harry Talbot, a wheelchair-bound veteran, they set out to stop the out-of-control genetic experiment set in place by Thomas Shadduck, the amoral owner of a high-tech firm. Despite his cheerful tones that do little justice to the dark atmosphere of the book, J. Charles gives a satisfactory reading. Dean Koontz is one of the bestselling writers in the world. He lives in Southern California.

Biography

He is one of the most recognized, read, and loved suspense writers of the 20th century. His imagination is a veritable factory of nightmares, conjuring twisted tales of psychological complexity. He even has a fan in Stephen King. For decades, Dean Koontz's name has been synonymous with terror, and his novels never fail to quicken the pulse and set hearts pounding.

Koontz has a lifelong love of writing that led him to spend much of his free time as an adult furiously cultivating his style and voice. However, it was only after his wife Gerda made him an offer he couldn't refuse while he was teaching English at a high school outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that he had a real opportunity to make a living with his avocation. Gerda agreed to support Dean for five years, during which time he could try to get his writing career off the ground. Little did she know that by the end of that five years she would be leaving her own job to handle the financial end of her husband's massively successful writing career.

Koontz first burst into the literary world with 1970's Beastchild, a science fiction novel that appealed to genre fans with its descriptions of aliens and otherworldly wars but also mined deeper themes of friendship and the breakdown of communication. Although it is not usually ranked among his classics, Beastchild provided the first inkling of Koontz's talent for populating even the most fantastical tale with fully human characters. Even at his goriest or most terrifying, he always allows room for redemption.

This complexity is what makes Koontz's work so popular with readers. He has a true gift for tempering horror with humanity, grotesqueries with lyricism. He also has a knack for genre-hopping, inventing Hitchcockian romantic mysteries, crime dramas, supernatural thrillers, science fiction, and psychological suspense with equal deftness and imagination. Good To Know

Shortly after graduating from college, Koontz took a job with the Appalachian Poverty Program where he would tutor and counsel underprivileged kids. However, after finding out that the last person who held his job had been beaten up and hospitalized by some of these kids, Koontz was more motivated than ever to get his writing career going.

When Koontz was a senior in college, he won the Atlantic Monthly fiction competition.

Koontz and Kevin Anderson's novel Frankenstein: The Prodigal Son was slotted to become a television series produced by Martin Scorsese. However, when the pilot failed to sell, the USA Network aired it as a TV movie in 2004. By that time Koontz had removed his name from the project.

"My wife, Gerda, and I took seven years of private ballroom dancing lessons, twice a week, ninety minutes each time. After we had gotten good at everything from swing to the foxtrot, we not only stopped taking lessons, but also stopped going dancing. Learning had been great fun; but for both of us, going out for an evening of dancing proved far less exhilarating than the learning. We both have a low boredom threshold. Now we dance at a wedding or other celebration perhaps once a year, and we're creaky."

"On my desk is a photograph given to me by my mother after Gerda and I were engaged to be married. It shows 23 children at a birthday party. It is neither my party nor Gerda's. I am three years old, going on four. Gerda is three. In that crowd of kids, we are sitting directly across a table from each other. I'm grinning, as if I already know she's my destiny, and Gerda has a serious expression, as if she's worried that I might be her destiny. We never met again until I was a senior in high school and she was a junior. We've been trying to make up for that lost time ever since.

"Gerda and I worked so much for the first two decades of our marriage that we never took a real vacation until our twentieth wedding anniversary. Then we went on a cruise, booking a first-class suite, sparing no expense. For more than half the cruise, the ship was caught in a hurricane. The open decks were closed because waves would have washed passengers overboard. About 90% of the passengers spent day after day in their cabins, projectile vomiting. We discovered that neither of us gets seasick. We had the showrooms, the casino, and the buffets virtually to ourselves. Because the crew had no one to serve, our service was exemplary. The ship dared not try to put into the scheduled ports; it was safer on the open sea. The big windows of the main bar presented a spectacular view of massive waves and lightning strikes that stabbed the sea by the score. Very romantic. We had a grand time.

    Another Classic

    I've been reading Dean Koontz since 2001 and I've got to say 'Midnight' is one book that captures the true essence of Koontz bone chilling, spine tingling story telling. This book tells the tale of a small California coastal town of Moonlight Cove who over the course of two months has several unexplained deaths with suspicious circumstances. Sam Booker comes to investigate along with Tessa Lockland who's sister was one of Moonlight Cove's many victims. Together they and an eleven-year-old girl named Chrissie and a disabled army vet solve the mysteries that have been plauging the town. This is a good read. I couldn't put this book down to save my life. It's so fast paced and filled with action that keeps you up all night long. This is definitely one of Koontz's better books.

    Unbelievable!!

    I found this book to be one of my favorites by Dean Koontz. The way he includes scenes from each character's point of view really adds to the plot...a lot of times the reader knows things before the characters do because of reading an earlier scene from a different character's perspective. I usually find scenes related to FBI/detective work dry and uninterested because I know next to nothing about that line of work...but in this book those scenes really set up the plot because they explain exactly what is going on inside the people of Moonlight Cove and the change that is taking place. I really enjoyed the character of Chrissie Foster...she's really smart for an eleven year old and the ending was great too. Read this book...it's a must

    Edge of your seat suspense!

    Koontz amazes me everytime. 'Midnight' is a story about a small coastal town quickly and secretly undergoing a horrific change to it's citizens. Caught in the middle of this living nightmare are 4 intriguing and distinctive characters brought together against the odds to quite possibly save the world as we know it. Riveting chapters kept me glued to the end. Koontz proves again that he is a master storyteller, and like featured evil inventor Thomas Shaddack, Koontz has the ability to create creatures that could only be found in the worst of our dreams.

    No other book can touch it!

    Just Amazing, and addicting! I've never read such a thrilling masterpiece. An instant classic. I had to have somone slap me just to get me to put it down.

    Literally UN-believeable!

    It was a good book but it took me almost 2 months to read it.(I read 'The Voice Of The Night'in 1 day!!!)It was really hard to believe that it could be real unlike others of his which you could imagine seeing happen. I mean come on! Alien things??? PULEEASE!!!!!

    not his best

    I've read about 5 Koontz books up to this point and this was by far my least favorite. I almost didn't read the entire book, but was halfway through it and decided I may as well finish it. I would not recommend this Koontz book to others.

    More glowing amber eyes in the night.

    Another good Koontz book that really stayed in my memory months later. More glowing amber eyes, another threatened little girl, another noble dog, more corrupt cops, romance, action, mystery, and the usual Koontzisms abound, but who cares? I especially liked the Indian protege' with his 'cactus candy' and boy under his guidance, which reminded me of the film 'Poltergeist.' The FBI agent was a little too simplistic in personality, and the scope and technicalities of the evil genius weren't that plausible, but the other characters were believable, the action was good, imagery was vivid, and there were plenty of technological thrills and biological chills.

    The ultimate thriller,a nonestop roller coaster ride!

    The surprises never end in Koontz's world.The book starts off with the unsolved murder of Janice Capshaw. She was out for a run in the quiet town of Moonlight Cove , a small town in California. Her murder sparks the suspicion that everything is not so normal in Moonlight Cove .

    The Best I have ever read

    This book is a personal thriller. It had the insincts of a wonderfully told plot. The characters were unbeleiving great. It had a surprising twist near the end that had me on the edge of my seat for days after I had read it. This definitly deserves a 5 star.
