More About This Book

Overview

It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy--and a time of transcendent courage and determination.  Leon Uris's blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists.  Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling of one of the most heroic struggles of modern times.

I have read this book several times over the last 4 decades . . .

The first time I read Mila 18 I was about 20 years old and I was totally engrossed with the story and never forgot it. Almost 40 years later, after losing my job, I returned to school and took a class on the Holocaust. For my end of semester project, I did a paper on the Warsaw Ghetto and used Mila 18 as one of the references. (I made an A!)This is a heart-wrenching story that is one of the best written books I have ever read. It encompasses the human spirit and the determination of the Jewish people to survive and carry on their legacy. No one who reads this book will ever be able to forget it!!

    I Also Recommend:

I am a publisher (different company) and this is the best book ever written

I love WWII books and read a lot of Wouk- Ambrose etc. picked this up and literally read it without stopping. There is only one other book that compares, it is a self published book by Stephen Paper "Voices from the forest" that comes close. It is bold and doesn't hold back any punches, it will absolutely get to you...wonderful

    Still Relevant Today

Don't miss this book! I read it years ago, and now my book club is reading it and learning again the lessons of the past. Leon Uris brings history to life with his powerful fiction.

    Historical Fiction At Its Best

This book was truly amazing. I did not want it to end! Being a Jewish teen, and having gone to Poland and seeing the site of Mila 18, this book was especially important to me. I would recommend it to someone who wishes to learn about the events of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and also someone who already knows about it and wants to add to their knowledge/sense of the happenings in the Warsaw Ghetto.I highly recommend this book- it is one you will never forget!

    ASTOUNDING!!!

This book is a beautifully written masterpiece. Being recommended to me by a teacher i did not take it seriously at first. That was until I read it myself. Things begin to happen from the start. The plot is superb and The ending is a surprise.

    Courage and Hope

Read this 20 years ago and the message is still relevant. If you like this, then read all of Uris' WWII writings and The Pianist by Szpilman.

    An amazing book!

Leon Uris makes you feel as if you were actually there. You want to laugh and cry with all of the characters. He has an amazing talent. It is a little hard to get into but once you do, you absolutely cannot put it down. I think that this is a book that everyone should read.

    Well Written

I was disappointed in Mila 18. In my opinion, it did not have the same 'fire' and excitement as Exodus or The Haj. I found this book rather drawn out and at times boring compared to the other books I've read by Uris. All in all, not one of my favorites by this author.

    Beyond a book! Incredible

Leon Uris has used literature as an fine instrument. This book passes along the extremes of the human condition barely known in our society of ease. This should be required reading for everyone. This book is an incredible experience. Saying it is a great book is secondary. Read it now!!!
