Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Medicine and the medical profession of today has changed greatly since the early Egyptians learned about the body's organs. However, even though we have come a long way, there is much to be learned from native healers and the future probably will make this medical period look as primitive as we think the Egyptian medical practices were. This title in the series imparts a lot of information. We begin in an emergency room and learn about the different specialists and the importance of triage—to determine those with the most acute medical needs and those who can wait for care. Hi-tech medical equipment can look inside a body—X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRIs and PET are some of the types of tests that can reveal information to help doctors determine and then treat medical problems. Each of these techniques is described at a level that ensures lay readers will have a basic understanding of what the test is and what its purpose is. Medicines have really changed the way we treat illnesses and diseases. Antibiotics represent a major breakthrough in how diseases are treated. There is a very informative insert that shows the time it takes to develop and test new drugs and what is not mentioned is the cost to drug companies to undertake this development and testing. The rules are so strict that according to the author only 1 in 1,000 new drugs is approved. The history of surgery is quickly recapped with an emphasis on hygiene and pain control and the ability today to transplant organs. Colorful photographs appear on each page and text and images are often superimposed. Good readers should have no problem, but those who are not proficient may find the text and layout too difficult tohandle. Bolded words are defined in the glossary, which is followed by a page of references to books and websites to learn more. There is an index. Part of the "Science Solves It" series.
