Overview

When Jack Mercy died, he left behind a ranch worth nearly twenty million dollars. Now his three daughters—each born of a different mother, and each unknown by the others—are gathered to hear the reading of the will. But the women are shocked to learn that before any of them can inherit, they must live together on the ranch for one year. For Tess, a screenwriter who just wants to collect her cash and get back to Hollywood, it’s a nightmare. For Lily, on the run from her abusive ex-husband, it’s a refuge. And for Willa—who grew up on the ranch—it’s an intrusion into her rightful home.

They are sisters…and strangers. Now they face a challenge: to put their bitterness aside and live like a family. To protect each other from danger—and unite against a brutal enemy who threatens to destroy them all…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Having published 100 novels in 15 years, Roberts (True Betrayals) just keeps getting better. In life, Jack Mercy, owner of the 25,000-acre Mercy Ranch, garnered more enemies than friends. His death promises to do the same, since his will forces his three grown daughters, half-sisters and virtual strangers to one another, to live together at the Montana ranch for a year or forfeit his estate, worth up to $20 million. If any die during the year, the survivor(s) will inherit the fortune, assuming they last the 12 months. Giving it a go are bossy Willa, part Blackfoot Indian, the only sister who lived on the ranch and is capable of running it; Tess, a sassy Hollywood scriptwriter who wants money but balks at a family reunion; and meek, divorced Lily, grateful for refuge. As the siblings settle in, someone begins committing barbaric acts against animals and then humans: Are these the random crimes of a psychopath? Or are they a devious distraction in a sinister game plan? Roberts balances the tension and sometimes gruesome action with three romances, crackling dialogue and a snappy infusion of humor. Setting her rich narrative against majestic scenery integral to the plot, she again demonstrates why, in 1986, she was the first author inducted into the Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame.
Library Journal
Three half-sisters come together at their late father's ranch in Montana. The terms of his will dictate that all three women must live together at the ranch for one year. If not, his enormous estate will be given to charity. Willa has lived all her life on the ranch and feels anger and resentment at her father's decision. Tess is a glamorous Hollywood screenwriter. She merely wants the cash and a quick escape from the desolate countryside. Lily, trying to hide from an abusive ex-husband, is only too happy to have the opportunity to stay in one place. Their evolving relationships with each other make up the heart of the story. It wouldn't be a Roberts novel if during their year of forced togetherness each sister didn't become romantically involved with tall, handsome cowboys. All six of the major characters are wonderfully written, with just the right touch of genuineness, warmth, and distinctiveness to make readers emotionally invest in their stories. Highly recommended for all libraries.-Margaret Hanes, Sterling Hts. P.L., Mich.
Kirkus Reviews
Three bridegrooms for three sisters: Roberts (True Betrayals, 1995, etc.) stylishly moseys into Big Sky romance.

Jack Mercy was a mean "son of a bitch" when he was alive, and as a corpse, buried with his Stetson and his bullwhip, he's not much better. According to his will, his three daughters, who've never met and whom Jack had by three different wives, must live together for a year at his big Montana ranch house in order to win their inheritance. During the long winter, the women bicker and bond and get entangled with three sexy, strapping fellows. Roberts has always been a winner at sexual tension and sexy dialogue, and so the reader gets to see not one but three couples get past the preliminaries and into the sack. The youngest sister, cowgirl Willa, manager of the Mercy ranch and daughter of an Ute mother, matches wits and strong wills with Ben McKinnon, lusty part owner of the Three Rocks spread. Lily, from Virginia, is a delicate, bird-boned creature who's been battered by her husband, but is now taken under the wing of Adam Wolfchild, Willa's Indian half- brother. And, finally, Tess, a sharp-dressing, wisecracking screenwriter from Hollywood who couldn't wait to get back to Rodeo Drive, stays to marry Nate, a frontier lawyer who raises horses, graduated from Yale, and loves Keats. Providing the usual Roberts suspense is a serial killer who guts and scalps his victims—not only humans but (in the newest romance-novel manifestation of evil) calves, cats, skunks and deer. ("Why would anyone do that to Bambi's mom?" wails Tess.) Roberts also includes a genuine, successful red herring, virgin territory for most romance writers, and incorporates all the important rituals of the genre with her customary skill and humor.

A good read on a long winter's night.

Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 150 novels. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J.D. Robb. With more than 280 million copies of her books in print and more than 100 New York Times bestsellers to date, Nora Roberts is indisputably the most celebrated and beloved women's fiction writer today.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    eh

This book bothered me for many reasons. The first of which, but not the most important, being that Lily, who was in an abusive marriage and recently got out of it and filed a restraining order against her ex, meets and marries someone within 9 months. I would think that an abusive relationship would make her more traumatized and more apt to be cautious when entering a new relationship.

Another irritant were her other two sisters, Willa and Tess. They, of course, fell in love with the other two hot guys in the novel, but they also learned something from them. And in return, the guys learned...oh, wait, they didn't learn anything. Aren't relationships about give and take? Learning from each other to become better people? The men, apparently, were perfect, while the women had much to learn. (It's hard to convey sarcasm in a blog...)

I'm also not a fan of points of view changing from paragraph to paragraph. I don't mind if it changes after a scene or after a chapter, but not within paragraphs. It gets too confusing when you're trying to figure out what the characters are thinking or feeling. Too much bouncing around.

This book paralleled the other book about three sisters living on (or near) a ranch that I read earlier, "True Colors". I was hoping that this one would rate a little above that one, but I'm not so sure. The characters were a bit deeper, and the mystery of the murderer helped to hold my interest, but overall the little details about the women and about relationships bugged me. I'm hoping I haven't lost my taste for romances, because some can be quite entertaining!

    Nora Roberts "Montana Sky"

Once again Nora Roberts delivers a captivating story. Three sisters with only one thing in common, their deceased father Jack Mercy, are thrust into a situation none of them saw coming. The middle sister, Lily, is running from a troubled and abusive past. The eldest sister, Tess, hails from Hollywood. Accustomed to the finer things of life, she is perhaps the most irritated to have her perfect and comfortable life disturbed. The middle sister, Willa, has her world turned upside down as her father's tyrannical grip reaches out to control her life from the grave. No one is sorry to see Jack Mercy die, but his actions have far reaching effects that change the lives of many people. Hunted by the past, the sisters must face the dangers that await them together, or be torn apart forever from those they come to love. If they are successful not only will they gain the fortune of Jack Mercy's legacy, but they will find the true bond of sisterhood that will last a life time.

Such a great book. A must read!

Nora Roberts is so clever with words and descriptions. Loved the details, action and multiple romantic stories against a wonderful Montana setting. The TV movie unfortunately did not do justice to this book!

    Good Book

I have always thought that the book is almost always better than the movie. In this case I was right. I like the movie but the book was so much better! Things that happened in the book were not even in the movie or it was changed in the movie. I really liked this book. I liked the characters had so much more depth to them. I will read this book again.

    AWESOME

Great Book!! It will have you turning the pages all the way up to the very last page. Just when you think you know who the killer is, NR throws in a twist and you think it's someone else. I was guessing all the way up until they told you the name of the person (I can usually figure it out way before that). On top of that it has STEAMY hot sex!! I enjoyed getting to know each of the sisters and watching them let their guard down to find love and each other. It's a book about romantic relationships, friendships, sibling relationships, it's thrilling, exciting, funny, and sexy! It's a must read -- I might even read it again next summer.

    Montana Rocks!!

Okay, so I first started reading Nora Roberts' books when I was eleven years old. Montana Sky was the fourth book I read by her. The characters are amazing because each has a different personality and they all work together in an unique way. Tess, Lily and Willa are sisters who share the same father. The father was a complete jerk. He leaves them with 1/3 interest in his ranch. The catch...they have to live there for a year together. The book might start out slow for some but as you read, you feel yourself being sucked into the story. Warning...there is a lot of death and gore so if you are weak stomached...heads up. I found the book to be beautiful and empowering. Three women form a bond and fall in love...proving that love (all kinds) conquer even the worst of times. There are many twists and turns that leave you hanging. I have read this book so many times that I had to go buy a new copy. Amazing!!

    A must have

Each of the Mercy sisters has their own unique personality. Willa was my fav. She may have been a bit bossy, but she knew exactly what she's doing. Tess is the arrogant and almost useless, yet funny blonde. And Lily is the quiet and sensitive, yet the only one who doesn't fight. This book was so very entertaining. Not one of Nora's Top 5, but in her top 10 best novels.

    great book!

The story line touches on family so I thought that was pretty good. The only thing that I am not crazy about is the female character named "Tess" - I think her character seems a little too slutty but then I imagine there's always a character like that in romance nobels. All in all I thought it was pretty good :-)

    Books on CD are Awesome

This is my first foray into books on CD. I listen to the story as I drive, not just long distances, but around my city. I was familiar with Nora Robert's work, but did not read many of her print books. The descriptive passages seemed to bog me down everytime I started one. What I've discovered by listening to Erika Leigh read the text, I am pulled into the story. The wide expanse of Montana took on new life for me as the book progressed. The romance, danger, sharp dialogue, and interesting characters Nora Roberts develops came to life for me. This is a great way to enjoy the books without actually reading them. I highly recommend this compact disc format. Brilliance Audio does a great job with the technology and mechanics of making the listening enjoyable.

    Mercy Ranch

I am a fan of Nora Roberts and I loved the movie of Montana Sky, but the book in some ways I disliked. I did not care at all for the language, which meant I had my handy dandy bottle of Wite-Out nearby. Also the descriptions of things that the killer does, let's just say that they are disturbing. But the romances that happen between the characters was definitely to my liking.

    Too much gore.

Too many mutilations for me. And the constant arguing over going out alone with a murderer on the loose started to get on my nerves. I hope people in real life don't act like this.

The book that got me hooked

I've been reading Nora Roberts since 98. This was the first book I ever read of hers, and is completely responsible for the over flowing book shelf dedicated to her in my house. Nora Roberts is an amazing author, and this book is the shiniest drop in her sea of words. Worth a second, third, and even forth read!
