Overview

Based on the hit USA network series- from edgar(r) Award - nominated Monk screenwriter lee Goldberg

Adrian Monk and his assistant Natalie are in Paris, touring the shadowy catacombs that wind beneath the city streets, lined with millions of centuries-old human bones. Of course, Monk notices one particular skull, declaring that the person was killed recently. With the delights of Paris overshadowed by murder, Monk will have to think fast-and see in the dark-if he's going to catch a cunning killer.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Goldberg's seventh novel based on the popular cable TV series fails to capture the spirit of actor Tony Shalhoub's portrayal of Adrian Monk, the brilliant obsessive-compulsive former SFPD detective traumatized by his wife's unsolved murder. To be fair, so much of the show's humor derives from visual gags that translating the character's fastidiousness and quirkiness into print would be a challenge for any writer. After a trip to Germany to track down his shrink, detailed in Mr. Monk Goes to Germany(2008), Monk takes a detour to Paris at the instigation of his long-suffering assistant, Natalie Teeger. Like Jessica Fletcher of Murder, She Wrote, Monk can hardly go a day without stumbling over a corpse. En route, he solves the in-flight murder of a fellow airline passenger. Once in Paris, Monk visits a sewer museum, where he notices a fresh skull amid a pile of centuries-old bones. This one's likely to divert only die-hard fans of the TV show. (Dec.)

Library Journal

Traveling with Adrian Monk is not easy, given his many phobias and needs. When he and Natalie, his long-suffering assistant, leave Bern, where he followed his therapist because he could not do without his advice, they go to Paris for a vacation. Insisting on visiting the city's sewers, Monk finds a bone that appears to be younger than the other bones in the catacombs. Full of snippets of slapstick humor and Monk's special talents for observation, this will appeal to fans of the USA TV show.

Best Monk Mystery from Lee Goldberg So Far

By "so far", I mean of the ones that I have read. (I've read eight, I think. I have also watched the entire series at least four times.)

What captivated me most about "Mr Monk Is Miserable" was the nature of the mystery. It was well-plotted and tricky enough along the way that the solution was not obvious. In fact, I realized the key clue about page 182 when Natalie wondered how the murder could have taken place in the dark. But the development of the plot was worthy of the classic detective novels of the past. (Rinehart, Sayers, etc.)

Two elements of humor stood out as well. Goldberg used my favorite line from the TV show ("You're going down, Mr. Pee." Mr. Monk Takes Manhattan.)and the title of the book was quite ingenious. Goldberg also maintained the characters extremely well. I am so impressed that he decided to write as Natalie. I guess if it worked for Conan Doyle & Watson and Christie & Captain Hastings, it should work for Gronberg & Ms. Teeger.

No one does novelizations of TV shows better than Lee Goldberg

Mr. Monk stalks his psychiatrist by following him to Germany so they can continue their sessions; he also solves homicide cases that almost killed him and his assistant Natalie. Both Natalie and his shrink are unhappy with Monk for ruining their vacations. Using the guilt card, Natalie blackmails Monk into spending a few days in France on a real vacation. On the plane from Germany, a passenger dies; Monk determines who the killer is in a few minutes.

In France, Monk feels traumatized as he is out of his environment, but Natalie has no sympathy as she plans to enjoy her vacation. Monk decides to visit the famous Paris sewerage system because he wants to pay homage to the cleanliness of the city. In the catacombs below the streets, he finds a tomb filled with old skulls except one that looks quite recent. DNA testing proves this is San Francisco con artist Nathan Chalmers assumed dead for a decade. In a darkened restaurant a woman tells Monk she knows something about the deceased, but before she can explain further she is killed. The compulsive Monk is cleaning the Paris streets while putting the puzzle pieces in order.

No one does novelizations of TV shows better than Lee Goldberg consistently does. The author is able to catch the essence of Monk¿s personality while also providing an entertaining whodunit. Readers see a different side of Paris with its underground catacombs and sewers (unless you happen to be the Honeymooners¿ Ed Norton) where people live. Natalie will have to wait for her needed foreign vacation while series fans will relish following the idiosyncrasies of the hero as he cleans the streets of Paris.

    I love Monk!

The Monk mysteries are even better than the TV series. I sincerely hope, that with the end of the series, Lee Goldberg will continue writing the books!

    All things Monk

The TV show is one of our favorites, and we'll really miss it when the final season ends. The books are great, and I've read all of them. This one is another in a series, and they are all perfect for Monk fans. I would never miss reading one, and always look forward to the next. Obviously, I'd highly recommend this title, along with the earlier ones.

If you like Monk, you'll like this book

These books are a must for Monk fans. While reading the books, I get a mental picture of the characters in my head--almost like watching the show on USA. The plots are engaging--a good way to keep the show alive.

The same goes for the Diagnosis Murder series....there's a sample book cover in the "I also recommend" section.

    Not what I expected.

I've read the Monk series before and enjoyed them all, until this one. I was so bored, I couldn't even get through it. He definitely didn't put much effort into this one.
