Roscoe Riley Rules #4: Never Swim in Applesauce

Chapter One

Welcome to Time-Out

Yep. It's me. Roscoe Riley.

Stuck in time-out again.

And speaking of stuck, have I got a story for you!

A very sticky story.

See, my class went on a field trip to an apple farm.

A field trip is when you go somewhere more fun than even recess and lunch put together.

We went to an apple farm so we could learn about where our food comes from.

Besides the pizza delivery guy.

All the kids went. And our teacher.

And some moms and dads to make sure we didn't get rowdy or do troublemaking.

I didn't get rowdy.

Well, maybe just once or twice.

But I did get into a teeny, tiny, practically invisible bit of trouble.

Who knew there was a rule about not jumping into a giant tub of applesauce?

I'll bet you've done some applesauce swimming, haven't you?

No?

Well, trust me on this. You should stick to swimming in real, live swimming pools.

Applesauce is very . . . well, appley.

But maybe I should start at the beginning.

The part before I got apple-slimed.

Meet the Author

Katherine Applegate's many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years in a Washington State shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He was a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation's largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan was well-known for his paintings, which he "signed" with a thumbprint.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

Everything Goes is a series of books written and illustrated by Brian Biggs. The first books in the series, Everything Goes: On Land and Everything Goes: In the Air, are a celebration of cars, trucks, motorcycles, planes, and other things that go!

    Another great book for kids

My son is a huge fan of Roscoe Riley. I think he feels like he is in Roscoe's class when he reads these books and that Roscoe is his good buddy. He laughs throughout the book and always asks to keep going when we finish a chapter. He thinks Roscoe is very funny and good at making his class laugh.
