Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
It's bedtime but the girl narrator of the paper-over-board No Bed Without Ted by Nicola Smee must search for her Teddy bear in the cupboard, under the table and finally on the clothesline; readers help in the hunt by lifting flaps and folding over half-pages. Children's Literature
This rhyming "lift the flap" book engages the reader in a little girl's hunt for her teddy bear, without which she cannot go to bed. As she gets out of her bath, clean and happy, she begins her search along with the reader. Everywhere she looks she finds her pets and a family of happy mice, but no teddy. As the child gets more and more distraught, her pets and mice try to console her. Only mom can come to the rescue. Ted has had his bath too and is hanging out to dry on the line in the garden. Soon child and teddy bear, dogs and cats, mice and rabbit are all fast asleep. Some nice turns of phrase, for example, "There on the line for all to see, is my dear little Ted, winking at me," and dynamic and entertaining illustrations make this book enjoyable, but the paper flaps may not last through the life of the book. 2005, Bloomsbury Children's Books, Ages 9 to 14.

PreS-Gr 1-For any child who has ever misplaced a favorite stuffed animal, this is a familiar story. A youngster announces that she is ready for bed, but can't find Ted. She conducts an exhaustive search through the lift-the-flap pages, but to no avail. Just when the tears begin to flow, Mom comes to the rescue and helps her find her beloved teddy bear. The cartoon illustrations are big and colorful, the story is fun, and the sense of contentment evidenced at the end is reassuring.-Beverly Combs, Webb Middle School, Garland, TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
