She leaves you guessing until the end.

A quick peek at the last few pages of Notorious tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the inner characters of Atticus Spenser and Caitlin Cassidy and why their story is worth reading if character is important to you as a reader. There's some very strong plot here, too, but I really thought the players were the major draw. FBI/police tales can be exciting and full of suspense but, bottomline, the people can make an individual story stand out. (Mind you, I'm not recommending you flip to the end because it would undoubtedly spoil the story for you. I've been known to do such things but it's usually because I'm getting bored. No reason to worry about that here.) Little touches in the plot of Notorious make a difference, too. As an example, it's no surprise when the husband of the murder victim becomes the prime suspect but there's a certain sadness in the lack of understanding between husband and wife. In those few moments before Cindy's death, we see the longing for her husband's attention and his seeming dismissal of her, his not caring that she's probably heading to an assignation, but it soon becomes obvious that Dutch truly didn't know how bad things had gotten between them. That's probably one of the great truths of a failed marriage. And, of course, Cindy's murder is just the tip of a very large and dangerous iceberg as Caity and Spense soon find out. Asked to look into the situation because a colleague is involved, they discover that nothing is as simple as it first seems and the machinations and repercussions will reach the highest echelons of the FBI and beyond. Carey Baldwin is an author I haven't encountered before but I now know she's got a sure hand with a thriller and she has also made me want to know more about Caity and Spense. Fortunately, there are two previous novels I can check out while I wait for a fourth.

I love the Cassidy & Spenser series but I think this one might be the best so far. So much happening. Picture it—a big fundraiser for the Governor of Texas who is planning to make a run for the White House, the venue is a prestigious and historical mansion, and everyone of importance is there, including the Governor Matt Cambridge, his wife, Heather, and his wife’s best friend, Cindy Langhorne and her husband, FBI Special Agent Dutch Langhorne. After telling her husband that she is meeting the Governor in private, Cindy promises to return to him by midnight for a dance. When she fails to reappear, Dutch goes looking for her only to find her dead in an upstairs bedroom, naked, and stretched out on the bed. Or so he claims to have found her that way… Now the main suspect in his wife’s murder, Dutch requests two agents to come help him solve the crime—enter Spense and Caity, both of whom can’t figure out why Dutch would request them since he and Spense do not like each other at all. Soon Caity discovers the reason, and promises Dutch that she will keep the secret from Spense but only until the right time, and then Dutch must tell him the truth. In the meantime, there’s a nutcase assassin trying to head them off and keep them from finding Cindy’s diary which someone, some unknown someone, wants bad enough to kill for—and wait till you find out who the real killer is, and who that unknown someone is…fabulous. I did guess the killer, but the unknown took me totally by surprise. NOTORIOUS, the third book in the Cassidy & Spenser Thriller series by Carey Baldwin is exceptional, action-packed, suspense filled and overflowing, and there are some absolute nail-biter moments, especially for Caity but what I enjoyed most about this installment of their adventures together in crime solving was the emotional factor. It’s all about intertwining relationships, childhood friendships, marriages filled with lies and miscommunication, family connections, and confrontations that will have you wanting to cry one moment, and cheer the next. We’ve been waiting for something to happen between Cassidy & Spenser in a similar way as we did for Castle and Beckett. I will just say this…something happens…but I’m not saying anything more because I don’t want to spoil things for you. There is so much happening in NOTORIOUS that you just have to experience it for yourself. If you love reading good suspense with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure, you’ll love the Cassidy & Spenser Thrillers but NOTORIOUS, I highly recommend this one because…well, I hear they’re cancelling Castle so I’m thinking Cassidy & Spenser should be our next great series to fall in love with…I already am. Read NOTORIOUS by Carey Baldwin…you can’t miss with this one. It’s got everything, sexy FBI agents, mystery, suspense, romance, and some funny moments too! ***purchased for my own personal reading but sharing my honest and unscripted review.

I have truly enjoyed this series. I highly recommend.

Wow! I absolutely loved Notorious! I was a bit concerned that I may not enjoy it but my concerns were quickly and thoroughly nixed. The only bureau thrillers I’ve ever enjoyed were JD Robb’s In Death series, Catherine Coulter’s FBI Thrillers, and Julie Garwood’s Buchanan-Renard series and I want sure what to expect. But Carey Baldwin’s Notorious is sn enthralling psychological thriller that’s suspenseful, light on gore, fairly clean and very fun. I enjoyed how there was a romance but it was background, I enjoyed the overlapping mysteries, but mostly I enjoyed how realistic Notorious was.

You’d think a third book of a series might show signs of slowing down? Carey Baldwin has bigger plans for Caity and Spense in Notorious, and we are grateful for it! When we last encountered our H/H, they were set to explore their personal relationship in Tahiti (the stars were finally aligning). Lamentably, Special Agent Atticus Spenser and forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Caitlin Cassidy were summoned to Texas by a fellow “feebie” (FBI), Agent Dutch Langhorne. First introduced in Fallen, as part of the Fallen Angel Killer case, Dutch is too stoic a man to request assistance regarding the murder of his wife. When things are just too close, when the case forces Dutch to think outside the box, Dutch astonishingly reaches out to Spense and Caity, and loyalty comes first -- no hesitation. Fret not, the chemistry and compatibility are safe in Carey Baldwin’s capable hands (love finds a way). Notorious is a psychological thriller with engaging subplots, baffling psychosis (replete with gruesome details), and swoons, unforgettable swoons, which make Caity and Spense an exciting, complex couple. “But in truth, the crushing weight of her charmed life made each demure step as torturous as a death march.” You know the saying about not knowing someone unless you’ve walked in their shoes? Meet Cindy, the wife of Dutch, living a life of excess…to the untrained eye. Someone murdered Cindy and there are a bevy of suspects, including Dutch himself. Carey Baldwin takes us through the memories (and regret) of an unknowing husband. Dutch was aware of Cindy’s infidelity, but the extent is a hard pill to swallow. Dutch sucks up his pride, painfully aware that his indifference contributed to Cindy’s demise, and remains fiercely protective; at the ready to find her killer. Spense and Caity try their best to remain detached as they navigate through the layers of proof and compromise in an effort to exonerate Dutch (diaries, the perfect confidante). Interesting wrench in the collaboration process is that Spense and Dutch don’t really care for each other. Ms. Baldwin volleys witty banter and outright jabs between the alpha men to elicit hearty laughs and big smiles. Caity’s pulling double duty keeping her keen eye on their tension and recognizing their similarities (they’re too arrogant to see it, lol). While Caity, Spense and Dutch are on the brink of discovery, the real killer is mirroring their steps, dangerously close, and his intrigue is nefarious in nature; he intends to beat them to, and with, the proverbial punch. They were no longer just looking for a fugitive. They were now on the run from a cold-blooded killer. Profiling is where Caity and Spense meet, and excel, and Carey Baldwin displays her badassness (even when our beloved leads have become the prey). From the exciting profiling to the intriguing subplots, Ms. Baldwin writes engaging characters that matter to us. When Spenser handed off his Rubik’s Cube to the kid, there was an instant reaction; it was an undeniably sweet gesture, but where’s the nearest Target -- Spenser functions better with it! When lines blur for Caity, to tell Spenser or not to tell Spenser, we cringe and recognize that it is delicate ground she walks; indecision so out of character, we fear for what can be jeopardized. These connections are special because we have come to love our unique heroes. Spense and Caity continue to grow and inspire; a dynamic duo who doesn’t feel intimidated by the other

At 12:45 AM this morning I resigned myself to the fact that Carey Baldwin had done it to me again. There was no way I was going to sleep until I reached the end of Baldwin's newest suspense thriller, NOTORIOUS. When fellow FBI agent Dutch Langhorne's high-profile, society wife is brutally murdered, forensic psychiatrist Caitlin Cassidy and FBI profiler Atticus Spenser are sent to Dallas to make sure their fellow agent gets a fair shake - if he's innocent - or is held accountable, if he isn't. Thus begins another intense, tightly woven, psychological thriller that took this reader on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns until arriving at the stunning conclusion. The characters are complex and fully formed. Baldwin, with her doctoral degrees in psychology and medicine, brings a chilling authenticity to the twisted minds of her villains that usually has me checking the door and window locks several times while reading her books. The darkness is nicely balanced by the banter between Cassidy and Spense as well as the emotion of their evolving romance. (this is the third book for this continuing couple) A superb secondary cast of characters moves the story along and leaves the reader with several choices of possible villains responsible for the murder as well as reasons for the crime. There were more than a few moments when I was certain I had it figured out only to be thrown another twist or turn that took me in an entirely different direction. One of the things I most enjoy about Baldwin's writing is that she keeps me guessing and once she grabs my attention (usually within the first ten pages), she holds it to the very end of the book. I highly recommend NOTORIOUS as well as the two earlier books in this series, FALLEN and JUDGMENT.
