An Emotional Tale of Revenge
In this novel, we're taken back to the second half of the 1800's in Sicily to the city of Barrafranca. Here we have families just trying to live their lives and make ends meet, the Casolini family is no exception. Unfortunately, the highly corrupt mayor's family will get in the way of that. Their son, Biachio, wants to marry Stellina Casolini (and her heart belongs to another). This one thing begins a chain reaction that shakes the town to its very foundations.
Corruption, cruelty, and murder result and fear escalates year after year. Peppino Casolini, Stellina's older brother, is eventually jailed but escapes and is looking for revenge on the ones who tore his family and friends apart. The bloody struggle lasts for years as justice is dispensed and karma repays the culprits in kind.
I always enjoy a good revenge story, and the brutality that was shown to the Casolini's is repaid in kind. An issue that I had is that it took a little while for the gripping part of the book to come. Once it did, however, I wanted to keep reading. It is a little scary that this is based on some actual events (to what extent, I do not know).
There are several love stories that are in this book and things get a bit mushy at times. It's not my kind of thing but I know that I'm in the minority on that one so take this as merely an opinion. Don't worry, the descriptions aren't pornography-like or anything.
As far as language goes, there really isn't any major foul language but there are some pretty violent and cruel scenes. Remember, it is a revenge story so that is expected. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to review the book. It's not every day that you come across a book that pulls you in emotionally.
